Unemployment: The Threat Of Global Scale

Dr. Michael LaitmanPeople today are afraid of the future. We know that many people today are losing their jobs, and even more people are afraid of losing them and are especially worried that they won’t find re-employment and be able earn an income to meet their needs. Many thousands in the USA lost their homes because of the real estate crisis, and we can only guess in what conditions they live and how difficult their situation is.

As part of my teaching activities, I visit many countries and see how people are oppressed by lack of work and income. There are two issues.

First: A person does not know how to provide for his family that could consist of a wife, children, home, debts, and aging parents. Perhaps, he is close to retirement age. He has to help his grandchildren. A number of people depend on the working family member.

The pressure is growing and becoming a common concern of the masses. As economists and sociologists calculate, soon the army of unemployed may be joined by hundreds of millions of people who will have nothing to live on. According to statistics, nearly half of the population of the USA require some kind of assistance for their livelihood, be it food stamps, hot meals, and so forth.

Second: People who lost their jobs do not know what to do with themselves. Areas affected by unemployment are transformed into centers of organized crime, prostitution, drug addiction, and so on. As a result, society pays a higher cost for this than it does for creating jobs.

As we know, after spending several years without a job, a person cannot return to the labor market. Even the educated, middle class loses its ability to work hard over time. They lose the right attitude. They no longer feel the need to leave the house every day and return after a workday to talk about their work, etc.

Thus, it is not personal, individual problems, but social distress that will hit the public like a boomerang, and society cannot cope with this problem. In addition, there may be unrest, riots, revolutions, and other troubles that arise when hundreds of millions are suddenly left behind.

This creates a wave that is rolling through the world like an epidemic. We see today that the problems that originate in one country, either accidentally or deliberately, are passed on and infect others like viruses.

Thus, the problems with the unemployed are not limited to the cost of living, hot meals, and second-hand warm clothes, nor can a society keep that up for years. One year passes or two at maximum, and a person is told, “Take care of yourself.” So far, there are not too many such people, but what will happen when the masses will be out of work?

The problem here is not so much financial, although they will not be satisfied with mere necessities. However, when there are plenty of them, they will gain power in the elections, as well as in demonstrations and riots. We have already seen what might happen. The examples are before us. The “Spring” can be not only Arab, but also European, American or any other.

“Eurozone Unemployment Hits New Record”

Dr. Michael LaitmanIn the News (from BBC News): “Unemployment in the eurozone hit a record high at the end of last year, the Eurostat agency has said.

“The jobless rate in the 17 countries that use the single currency was 10.4% in December, unchanged from November’s figure which was revised up from 10.3%. …

“Unemployment has been rising throughout 2011, as the debt crisis in the region has continued. In December 2010, the unemployment rate in the euro area was 10%.”

My Comment: You should immediately begin to create educational centers for the unemployed and those who wish to receive integral education and upbringing. This will calm society and create a good positive atmosphere. Otherwise, conflict is inevitable!

If You Wish To Fix The World, Start With Yourself

Dr. Michael LaitmanIf we force ourselves onto nature in an attempt to “correct” it as our mind dictates, nothing good will ever come out of it. In truth, we don’t know what brings harm and what makes an improvement, and what form it will take in the end. One thing is certain: The world completely depends on the correction of man who must correct himself. If he doesn’t, he sees the surrounding world as corrupted as it is now. But if instead of correcting himself he starts correcting it, he makes it worse!

On the outside, in still, vegetative, and animate nature there is nothing to correct! It must remain the way it is; and the only thing we can transform is man, internally. Therefore, don’t evaluate what is harmful and what is beneficial: If I am getting a beating to get transformed during the journey, then I accept these problems as aid. After all, only man pays dues. If it weren’t for you, all nature would be in balance. But in order to have you evolve, it gets out of balance, and you start feeling it in yourself.

All of the surrounding nature is your external desires that you cannot correct yet; in Kabbalah these outward levels are regarded as “cover” and “house” (“Levush” and “Eichal”). If you don’t wish to work on them, they will be bothering you. And if you decide to correct them directly, instead of reforming your inner desires, by annihilating some type of fly or other animal species, hoping to improve the world thereby, it will only lead to a double catastrophe on both planes: as on the material plane, so on the spiritual one.

From trying to perform “corrections” on the outside, which wasn’t supposed to be touched at all, not only will you continue to suffer internally, but also externally. Everything there is in the world, no matter how harmful, has its designation and must exist. If you wish to fix it, please do: Fix yourself!

Before World War II, Baal HaSulam was shouting out that we were headed for disaster, and he appealed to people to make corrections, but nobody would listen. And all who remained in Poland ended up in Nazi concentration camps. But even today, we still don’t hear the warnings.

Spain’s Unemployment Tops 5 Million

Dr. Michael LaitmanIn the News (from BBC News): “Spain’s unemployment figure passed the five million mark in the last quarter of 2011, official figures show. …

“The rate rose from 21.5% in the third quarter to 22.8% – the highest rate in nearly 17 years.

“Spain already has the highest jobless rate in the 17-nation eurozone and is expected to slide back into recession.

“The 22.8% rate is more than twice the average unemployment rate of the eurozone, which stood at 10.3% in November, according to data released earlier this month.

“The Spanish figures show almost half of all 16-24 year-olds in the country are jobless – 48.6% compared with 45.8% before. …”

Comment: It is necessary to turn the unemployed into students of integral education, rather than depleting the country with high taxes and provoking people to revolt.

Belgium Hit By General Strike

Dr. Michael LaitmanIn the News (from The New York Times): “Belgium was paralyzed by a national strike Monday [January 30th] as unions, angry over austerity measures, timed the protest to coincide with a one-day meeting of European Union leaders here in the capital.

“The rail network was shut down and flights were severely disrupted…Tram, bus and metro services in Brussels were suspended, transportation officials said. High-speed international trains, like the Eurostar from London and Thalys from Paris, were among those canceled.

“Belgian news media reported that most government buildings and many schools were closed and that postal services were not operating. Many stores were closed, and striking workers erected barriers to block access to industrial zones. …

“Belgium is one of many European nations struggling to control its budget, and unions are angry over plans to cut spending and raise taxes. “

Comment: Everything is possible to accomplish through simple discussion, gentle explanation, and public agreement at the round table, as one family, which people in general want—and come to the need for integral education in order to achieve equitable distribution.

The Purpose That Gives Strength

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: What is the difference between a good integral environment and an incorrect one?

Answer: Only the desire to ensure that we attain the perfect level of our state and nothing more.

In other words, people who understand that there is no other choice and that we must come out of the crisis, and preferably without a war or horrible dramatic events come together. It is best if we artificially direct ourselves toward this and start doing it. We study this system, try to realize it, and thus influence each other. There is nothing else. But at the same time we rouse the power of the goal they strive to, which is concealed in nature, and this goal seems to shine at them from afar. It emanates its power, its perfection, and this is their life. And this is why they acquire new strengths.

Any great goal has power. And those connected with it can overcome enormous work.

Question: Is this aspiration to the goal the “ascent”?

Answer: Yes, every time we ascend specifically in relation to the goal. But when we are in the group, this small community, we can coordinate ourselves correctly.

How can I know what this goal is, where it is, what mutual participation of the cogwheels in the mechanism is, etc.? I can see the way I apply myself in the group: whether I behave correctly inside this small community, with maximum integration and kindness towards all. I must study the consequence of all my thoughts: thoughts, not just actions. The thought is the action.

Our thoughts and desires play the same role on the next level of our existence (on the level of “Human” (Adam), the level of the integral system) as actions do on our current corporeal level.

This is why we must reach the control and correction of our desires and thoughts. This is the main thing. Actions can remain just as harsh and cruel as in an operating room, but they will be directed towards the good of others. The main transformation takes place in desires and thoughts.

People Withdraw Into Themselves

Dr. Michael LaitmanOpinion (from Vesti.ru): “Parents want their children to grow self-confident. Children are aimed at achieving success. Ambition and a sense of superiority are instilled in them. A child is a reflection of our value system.

“In 2011, parents wanted to develop in their children the ability to achieve their goals, a sense of responsibility, and the ability to stand up for themselves. In 1998, it was good manners, the ability to behave in society, and to communicate with people. Today, these qualities are not included even in the top five.

“These data suggest that the world has become much tougher, and people more self-centered. We used to say ‘we’ and now ‘I,’ but it is hard to live when you have only ‘I’—you are alone!”

My Comment: Our system of values is a consequence of our growing egoism. It will grow until we realize its deadly properties and begin to seek the means of dealing with it. Then, we will feel the need for a method of correction and begin to exit from the general crisis. We can advance this moment by disseminating the method of mutual guarantee.

It’s Not A Crisis Of Capitalism, But Of Individualism

Dr. Michael LaitmanOpinion (V. Ganzhin, The Institute for Global Research and Social Movement): “Crisis is a contradiction between the goal and the means of capitalism. It is a violation of exchange between people, a social catastrophe. It is a state when overproduction of goods doesn’t match consumption limited by the ability of people to pay their bills (solvency).

“Everything is built on greed for money. Vendors increase prices. The purpose of capital is to boost the profits. The main stimulus for a capitalist is a greed for money and the desire to enhance proceeds. To amend this situation, it is necessary to renounce the orientation towards money, towards profitability. It is essential to create production focused on ‘human needs,’ to restructure production so that satisfaction of human needs rather than making profits becomes its main goal.

“It looks like utopia. At the time of crisis, capitalists will abandon their enterprises because they won’t be profitable. The collapse of the financial system will force employees to take over the abandoned means of production to satisfy their immediate necessities. People will work regardless of profitability, they will work to provide themselves with the products they need. They will transition from production for the sake of growing sales to production for the sake of survival.

“Reduction of working time. As a means of life, labor will disappear. Labor productivity will become so effective that the time that is needed to produce vital goods will be completely minimized.

“Crisis is a contradiction between the goal and the means of capitalism. The main thing is to refuse the major incentive of the capitalist way of production: financial orientation and profitability. Capitalists, governments, and general current social mind-set consider expansion of consumption and further growth of solvency to be a salvation from the crisis. But in fact, the real rescue is not in social guarantees; the crisis requires deliverance from the capitalism itself.”

My Comment: This is not a crisis of capitalism; it is a crisis of individualism. It is not a simple capitalist overproduction crisis, but rather the birth of a new level of humankind—an integral community. Instead of fighting with capitalism, we should build a society of mutual guarantee by creating an educational environment that will influence people. Only the transformation of human consciousness will raise us to a new level of existence. Otherwise nature will force us towards this by its harsh forces of development.

A Disturbing Indifference

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: Freedom of will, is it one’s voluntary agreement to be a part of integral upbringing to become an integrated human being?

Answer: It is a realization of the necessity and the fact that there’s nothing but this.

Nobody wants this; after all, we’re all egoists. However, when you begin to study and to see where everything is headed, you begin to understand the importance, the necessity, and inevitability of the next state. You also begin to wonder what will happen if you choose to shut your eyes like a small child that denies the existence of something simply because he doesn’t see it.

If I approach this consciously, then I see the terrible suffering on all levels that are befalling to push me to it. This suffering is increasing gradually, not descending as a huge immediate blow. First there is a little prodding, and then it gets stronger and stronger. But, I can already imagine what it would be.

Now we have come to serious prodding. Just look at how many natural disasters, revolutions, and other difficulties we’ve had in the past year. People are even openly discussing the possibility of nuclear war, but they are talking about it too softly.

The Transition Point Is In Class Struggle

Dr. Michael LaitmanOpinion (Gerald Celente, the founder of Trends Research Institute, from ETF Daily News): “Twenty-two months of hysteria of an impending European financial collapse, starting with Greece in March of 2010, will finally come to an end in 2012….

“In Celente’s latest forecast, titled, The First Great War of the 21st Century—Prepare, Survive, Prevail, he paints a bleak picture for 2012, predicting a worsening of class warfare that already wages within more than a dozen countries, from Tunisia, Egypt, Yemen, Syria, Bahrain and Qatar to the UK, Greece and Italy, which will eventually spread to eastern Europe/central Asia and more intensely in the United States.”

Comment: Everything happens exactly as in Marxist theory. The strengthening of class struggle will lead to the liberation of the masses from the power of capital. Only, it is desirable that it should happen in a peaceful way, through realizing the need to change our attitude toward society and the world from egoistic to unified, as required by global integral nature.
