Baal HaSulam, “Introduction to the Book Panim Meirot uMasbirot,” p.4: Now you can understand their words (Sanhedrin 98a): “The Son of David comes either in a generation that is all worthy, or all unworthy.” This is very perplexing. Seemingly, as long as there are a few righteous in the generation, they detain the redemption. And if the righteous perish from the land, the Messiah will be able to come?

Question: Does that mean that in a generation of the wicked, the revelation of the Creator will take place as if from the opposite side, from the posterior?

Answer: First He will be revealed to Israel, which means to those who yearn Yashar—El (straight to the Creator). Then gradually it will influence everyone around—the nations of the world in wider circles that are increasingly further from the center. If the people of Israel are like a vessel and they fill themselves, then the abundance will spill over from the vessel to the whole world.

Thus we have to worry about how to fill ourselves with the Light of AB—SAG, with the intention of in order to bestow. When we receive the Light of Hochma dressed in Hassadim, this “style” will pass on to everyone.

A person is suddenly inverted by the Light of AB—SAG in his mind and in his feelings, since the Light of AB belongs to the head and the Light of SAG belongs to the heart. If a person suddenly inverts and discovers the connection, he understands how to tie the mind and the feelings so that they will cooperate.

This is how the Light of AB—SAG operates: it lets us recognize the importance, the new values. If this happens to us, it will be passed on by order. It isn’t by chance that Israel is called Li—Rosh (I have a head). Then according to this place it will spread to other nations through the connecting pipes.

At first they won’t even see where it comes from, but later they will begin to turn to Israel in order to connect with them and among them. As it says: “And they shall all know Me from the smallest to the biggest.”

Question: Is it possible for someone who was born in sin not to sin?

Answer: Of course not. All of us have been born in sin and we can’t avoid sinning. No one expects us to be angels. What is expected of us is to realize this and understand what a sin really is.

A sin is any desire directed against connecting with others, against correcting the breaking. The common soul broke and now every one exists in a broken system alone with his egoism. I want to use this egoism to somehow use others, but this is not bad, it’s a natural desire.

Real egoism, which we need to resist and against which we need to work, only manifests when I really try to connect with others, and a resistance arises in me, a lack of desire to be connected with them. Regular people, who operate in this world in a customary manner, are not called egoists. They’re not trying to unite into a single system.

Egoism only manifests under the condition that a person is planning to connect with the intention of correcting the breaking, meaning uniting with the purpose of revealing the Creator. And it’s possible that I don’t even want this. But if I still make an effort then the evil in me or the power of the breaking becomes revealed to me. This is true egoism.

But a regular person, who doesn’t work with this, doesn’t have egoism! First, the power of the breaking that operates between us needs to be discovered. Then we’ll be able to correct it and turn it into the power of unity. This will be the recognition of evil, the prayer will be born out of it and the correction, the goodness, will come.

This entire process only happens to those who try to connect with the purpose to correct the breaking and to reveal the Creator for the sake of pleasing Him by so doing. It needs to be absolutely clear to us that all this only happens with this intention. Then we connect to the chain of actions that help us reveal the evil, we ask for help and receive the strength to perform the correction, and we reach the revelation.

Baal HaSulam, “Peace in the World”: Because indeed, we have already come to such a degree that the whole world is considered one collective and one society. Meaning, because each person in the world draws his life’s marrow and his livelihood from all the people in the world, he is coerced to serve and care for the well-being of the whole world.

What was clear to Baal HaSulam almost a century ago still is unclear to people today. We have reached such a state in our evolution that we all are dependent on one another in a tight way, directly.

Question: Why is it still unclear?

Answer: See for yourself: Everyone “pulls the blanket” to his side and doesn’t understand that eventually, he is causing himself even greater harm than in any other way.

The entire point is that if I invest in the well-being of the public, I don’t see any self-benefit in it. If I take something from the public, I see a real benefit from it.

However, Baal HaSulam says the opposite: The system is already “closed.” It is “tied up” in a perfect, whole way inside itself. So, if you work for the public, you get a return that is ten times greater, and if you take from the public, your loss is ten times greater. However, we just keep on going, not understanding what is going on.

Question: What conceals the truth from me?

Answer: It is my ego. There is an integral system that is being revealed today. Actually, the system of Ein Sof (Infinity) is being revealed to us, of the Shechina, the vessel of the general soul in which we are all connected.

Up until now,  let’s say until 1995, everyone grew in his private desires for ages, in the root phase and phases one, two, three, and four. Now, a person discovers that having no choice, he is connected to everyone, and everyone is connected to him.

The strings of mutual connection make a great, complicated integral system, and there is even a certain scientific field that studies this. Before, each part was not connected so tightly to the others. It developed individually, and that was the general trend. However, since the 1950’s, we have begun to feel the global trend, and today, everyone has reached his personal limit and only needs to develop in mutual connection with others. There is nothing left but that. This is the trend until the end of correction.

We are still locked within our egoistic desire and want to fill it like before, but this system is not active any more. Before, I used to fill myself as my ego grew, and it took me from one level to another, from the root phase to phase four.

Today, I continue to operate like in the past, but I cannot because I cannot fill myself—my desires don’t develop in the previous direction anymore. From now on, they can develop only in the direction of togetherness (∑), of unity.

This means that even the egoistic benefits, at first sight, are possible only by connection, only by using connection. This is what is being revealed to us these days.

Question: Who is Baal HaSulam referring to when he writes of those that are “wise in the heart”?

Answer: “Wise in the heart” is one that is searching for a way to open his heart to a higher wisdom (“Wisdom” – “Hochma”), a wisdom of unity, by means of connecting with others.

We wish to connect with our hearts, to connect our desires, and from all the hearts and the sum total of all desires to choose only those that are ready for connection. By creating a connection between these desires we create a common network inside which we wish to begin to act.

While inside this network we forget which desires belong to whom because it is now our common system. Then within it we begin to sense the Light of Hochma and therefore are called wise in the heart. After all, we reveal the Light of Hochma (wisdom) within the connection of our hearts.

Question: Today it’s quite clear that a person depends on and is enslaved to his environment. But how can we conclude from this fact that we must act for the wellbeing of society?

Answer: If a person doesn’t serve the world, the world will not provide him with what he needs. Today what I need actually depends on the whole world. I will have nothing if the world doesn’t give it to me, in other words, if the whole world is not mutually connected. This means that I need to worry that the whole world will be connected and will cooperate in harmony. Only then will it be able to provide me with what I need.

Somewhere in the world people are digging for iron, in another place for copper, in another for oil, and in another place for gas. Factories provide the goods and ships transport them; scientists develop new technologies and eventually the end product reaches me. In the past we weren’t really concerned about this. There was enough “local” ego of the factory owner or of the oil well owner, but today it doesn’t work that way anymore. Soon we’ll be surprised to see how major production mechanisms don’t function. Why? Doesn’t the oil well owner want to make a profit? Still, his business will fail since we don’t give him power, we don’t worry about him.

It’s time to worry about the wellbeing of the whole world. The system is operating integrally now and it needs everyone’s deficiency in order to function. “But can I know and remember everything that happens in the world? One could go mad, not even a computer can do that!”

True, therefore the only option is the connection of the hearts and desires, not the thoughts. Start operating on the level of the desires and you’ll suddenly see how the thought accurately “dresses” on the awakening of the heart, on the desire, and is able to worry about everyone. Then you’ll see and know why a great potential of your brain is still inactive.

Baal HaSulam, “Peace in the World”: This is because what is found in the collective is only what is found in the individual. And the benefit of the collective is the benefit of each and every individual: Who harms the collective takes his share in the harm, and who benefits the collective takes his share in the benefit, since individuals are part of the whole, and the whole is not worth in anyway more than the sum of its individuals.

We have to accept this as operating laws, and it depends on a person’s development whether they are revealed or not.

We are all parts of the general mechanism. Every individual is like a cogwheel that spins in accordance with others and is not asked whether it wants to or not. The machine is already assembled and active and if you feel that you are free and independent it is only because you are detached from reality. You simply don’t know how you are being “spun.”

But at a certain point you are shown that from now on you have to spin in a conscious way, and if you don’t do that, you experience unpleasantness.

Let’s illustrate it in a drawing. There is a mechanism in which all the wheels are spinning ideally. There is a small engine attached to them (M), which spins them, all of them.

Then each wheel is made to understand that at a certain point in its work it has to stop spinning instinctively and start spinning according to its own will, by uniting with others, by feeling responsible for them, out of love for them.

A person feels that everyone depends on him and then in his “red zone” two forces begin to operate: the evil force and the good force. He knows that he has to use the good force, but he cannot do anything with himself and only wants to use the evil force. At precisely this gap (Δ) he discovers his free will.

So the machine is working and you are spinning. Eventually, like it says, no one will be repulsed by the Creator, and everyone will return to his root. One way or the other, we are all its workers. But if you have a “point in the heart,” you want to reveal the truth and in order to do that you want to perform special actions, then you suddenly discover reality and it is revealed to you in two manners.

Then you have the opportunity to be incorporated in it and to discover and understand its engine—the Creator and the thought of creation and its whole system. When you become part of the process and equalize yourself with that “machine” you begin to see what it is and what it is meant for, etc.

You find yourself between the two opposites. On the one hand, the ego is pulling you outwards: “What do you need this for? Live and enjoy what you have, and what will be will be.” On the other hand, you are drawn to more.

Here you have to change the motivating force. Instead of being impressed by the attraction to new revelations, you start advancing in the real sense—incorporating in the general mechanism and acting in it.

This is possible only if you are incorporate in order to help others; not because you want to understand and to feel some innovation, to take part in something great, but in order to focus your powers on helping the general mechanism, on helping others. You have to switch the reason for your participation. Now you are being spurred by sufferings and you have to switch them to pangs of love.

As for the “machine,” it will operate as usual. Our world simply “spins,” but you are prevented from opening your eyes and seeing what is called the upper World—the sphere where all the accounts and all the decisions are made…

Baal HaSulam, “Messiah’s Shofar”: And the dissemination of the wisdom in the masses is called a “Shofar.” Like the Shofar, whose voice travels a great distance, the echo of the wisdom will spread all over the world, so even the nations will hear and acknowledge that there is Godly wisdom in Israel.

The goal of creation is to correct the vessels of receiving. According to the sources, the Creator offered the vessels and the Masachim (screens) to anyone from AHP who wanted the Lights of correction, but no one accepted them.

This means that the Light cannot influence a vessel if the vessel is not compatible with it, if there is no desire for bestowal in the vessel. There cannot be a desire to bestow in the desires to receive since the nature of these vessels is opposite from bestowal to begin with.

So, how can the desire to receive acquire at least some feeling toward bestowal? This is the question.

In order to do that, we use a special part called GE. Its representatives are among the vessels of receiving, although they are different, and so even in our world, they seem very strange. They are called the nation of Israel, which actually does not belong to this world because its roots are in the root phase and in the first and second phases. Initially, it is the attribute of bestowal, although they are in a corrupt form in this world.

These vessels can correct themselves in order to bestow, but on a very low level. Actually, what can they bestow? When they left ancient Babylon, they were in the pure form of GE: a “point in the heart” and nothing more than that.

They went down to Egypt in order to receive a more corrected form later on, which is suitable for their role. They left Babel as one family, and they left Egypt as a nation, the Nation of Israel. Then, they attained their correction, the levels of the Temple, or the “Nation of Israel in the Land of Israel.”

However, all that was just a preparation in order to get closer somehow to AHP. Therefore, after having corrected themselves, the vessels of Israel had to take care of AHP. In order to do that, they were shattered and deteriorated.

It took place as the Greeks and the Romans invaded them and passed on their desires to Israel, thus ruining them. On the whole, the sons of Israel fell downward to AHP, which is called the shattering or the “destruction of the Temple.”

As a result, GE and AHP were completely mixed. This mutual incorporation was supposed to last for 2,000 years, until all the vessels of bestowal and the vessels of receiving were mixed. We all know that the phase of 2,000 years is just a term, while the actual time was 1,500 years.

Later, when the mutual incorporation ended, starting from the times of ARI, the time of correction began, the revival. Therefore, ARI is called “Messiah, son of Joseph.” The main thing in those times was the dissemination of the wisdom of Kabbalah by the Hassidim and different actions through ascents and descents. Eventually, today, the wisdom of Kabbalah is being revealed, and we are carrying on this process by blowing the “Messiah’s Shofar.”

To whom should the wisdom of Kabbalah be revealed? Is it to parts of GE? However, they all are totally mixed with AHP. So, who will accept this wisdom: separate parts or all of them without an exception, and immediately or in a certain order?

Baal HaSulam answers this. The wisdom of Kabbalah should spread among everyone without exception. The same amount of particles that penetrated a person’s heart during these 2,000 years is also the amount of the Light that is illuminated in him.

The spiritual body retains only the Light that descends to it from the Partzuf’s head. All sorts of decisions and arrangements regarding creation’s actions in relation to the Creator are made in the Partzuf’s head. Later, everything that was preset in the head is being implemented through the body.

There is nothing in the body that does not exist in the head; it’s essential to practically implement throughout the body what is in the head, meaning receive for the sake of bestowal with the intention to please the Creator.

As a result, all elements of a spiritual action are being revealed (the complete TANTA); however, creation realizes that the work it has just performed was “fragmental” (partial) by nature and that it has not reached the same level of benevolence towards the Creator that the Creator transmits to it.

Thus, creation cannot continue acting as before, nor can it be satisfied with its actions, since there is no such thing as incomplete relationships in spirituality; spiritual relations are perfect. If a person faces boundaries and understands that he is incapable of overcoming them, he has to stop. Although, even when he stops he should still feel at least fractional love for his Master, even though it is not sufficient compared to the unlimited benevolence of the Creator and His desire to please the creation.

Partzufim in which one receives the Light from the Creator only prove that if creation lacks even one gram before it reaches the final correction it is still equal to doing nothing at all since one still limits one’s bestowal and thus makes it incomplete! This is the most vital thing to understand!

It doesn’t matter that one has already completed 99% of work. He still has restricted borders of love, whereas the Creator always relates to us with infinite love; the difference here is qualitative and crucial. So, until we reach the end of correction, we shouldn’t lose even a single step that we have already gone through; our duty is to constantly search for what else to add.

Baal HaSulam, “Peace in the World”: And each and every individual in society is like a wheel that is linked to several other wheels placed in a machine. And this single wheel has no freedom of movement in and of itself, but continues with the motion of the rest of the wheels in a certain direction to qualify the machine to perform its general role.

Suppose you are a bolt in an engine and you break down. As a result the whole engine breaks down together with you. So the car and the passengers inside are unable to move, blocking the road for other cars with other passengers. All this is only because of one small bolt. There was such an incident in the English army, when the king lost a battle because of a horseshoe that broke off the horse. The horse began to limp and this demoralized the soldiers and led to their defeat. Later they found out that one broken nail was the reason for their defeat and for the death of thousands.

So what is the price of one single bolt? It is worth all the damage that it can cause if it breaks down or doesn’t function properly. It turns out that you are worthwhile to the world according to your value, because we suffer because of you. However, if you do your job, then we will reach the end of correction. This means that you are dear to us, actually priceless, since everything depends on you. In other words everyone is worth a whole world, both according to his contribution and according to the damage he can cause.

Man is a social creature, which means that he depends on everyone and everyone depends on him, but this is revealed gradually.

All of human history is the essence of the social revelation of man. When he climbed down from the tree he lived in the society of the family or the tribe and then gradually expanded his social boundaries. On the one hand, the ego which separates him from others developed in him, and so he had property—a house of his own, his own field, his own camels, horses, sheep, servants… on the other hand, he became more dependent on others—one person became a blacksmith, another a shoemaker, a third became a tailor, another became a farmer, and they were all dependent on one another on the human level of exchanging goods and services. This is despite the fact that a person actually doesn’t want to give anything but only wants to take.

Thus the wheels of the global mechanism started moving since there was no other choice, although no one wanted to coordinate his actions with others. Society developed throughout history along two lines: a growing mutual dependence and a growing egoistic repulsion. People closed themselves by city walls and political borders until this irreversible process reached a dead end, as we have a big ego, and we all depend on one another. This is what is revealed to us today at the end of the two trends that started in the past and have shaped mankind.

Today we have no choice: We are totally dependent on each other and totally hate one another although neither aspect has been fully revealed yet, and we still have to discover this. On the whole, it is revealed by the upper Light that Reforms when we try to connect so that we can rise towards it.

Suppose we want to connect worldwide, what will be the benefit of such an action? By seeing the initial advantages of the connection, we will also see that we are very far from it, absorbed in evil. This is because good and bad are measured in contrast to one another. So time after time, by yearning for the good, for unity, we will rediscover a new evil, which is called the “war of Gog and Magog”—Armageddon…

On the whole, our general collective mechanism is operating now too if we look at it from a different level of clarification. The wheels are spinning and the parts are working. The question is whether you agree with the actions of this mechanism when they are revealed to you. This is how we should examine the situation, from a more mature level.
