The Last Gates
“All the gates were locked except for the gates of tears.”
It is when all the gates are locked that there is a place for the gates of tears, and then we see that they are not locked. That is, when a person comes to complete concealment, then “my soul shall weep in secret,” because he has no other counsel. And it’s called: “All that your hand and strength can do, do” (Baal HaSulam, Shamati 18).
And then you will reach the gates of tears and force them to open. This is how we enter the palace of the Creator, the upper world; it is only through the gates of tears when you are completely despaired of your own strength and know that nothing can help you, but you must reach the goal. This is the result of great work.
You are one hundred percent sure that you have nothing more to add, and then the entrance to the spiritual opens up to you. Gradually, we form this state called the “gates of tears.”
What are gates? As long as it seems to you that you can do something, you see a wall in front of you. And then you suddenly notice an opening, an opening in that wall, an entrance, and you enter.
That is how it is in spirituality: an insurmountable wall stands before you that gets stronger and higher. And yet, you still try to break through this wall, but you do not find any gates in it, or all the gates are locked.
Seeing a wall in front of you is a very advanced state. But then this wall opens, and suddenly a passage appears in it. My teacher RABASH once told me that this is how it happens in spirituality: there is either a wall or an entrance, and it is impossible to see in advance where the entrance will be in the wall.
This is the wall around your heart. You cannot make a hole in the walls of your heart so that the quality of bestowal, the quality of the Creator, can enter there. The heart is closed, sealed, and covered with an impenetrable hard crust. All that remains is prayer—prayer from the group.
It is necessary to unite together in the ten and ask, ask for everyone, and then one day ask for one person. Today we pray for one friend, tomorrow for another, in turn, for each one. This is how we will begin to get used to demanding from the Creator to take care of the friends.
