What Transforms Us Into an Army?
That is, Tzava [army] are men of war. These are people who go each day to fight the evil inclination. They are called “army” (Rabash, Article No. 6, “What Is Above Reason in the Work?”).
Question: We usually say that a person fights with his evil inclination, with his egoism—that is, I am fight. But here it is talking about an army, that is, about some kind of unification. What turns me or us into an army?
Answer: It is your connection with your friends. When you unite with each other with the desire to go against your evil inclination, egoism, and in spite of it, mutually strive toward each other, it turns out that the group, the ten, defeats the evil inclination.
Question: Does this mean that we are fighting some kind of collective, unified egoism?
Answer: Yes, united egoism is the egoism of all of you, your group, and those who are connecting to it. But in spite of it, you need to strive toward the goal. And the goal is only in connection, in merging of all of us with each other.
Question: Should we now, in our time, strengthen ourselves and address Him as the Creator of armies? If so, then what is that?
Answer: We must strive for connection between us, when everyone feels it as the most important thing. And the fact is that a person feels himself as a separated unit, detached from others, that is no longer important to him. We must strive for the feeling of each other in connection with others.
