The Body Is the Soul’s Clothing

I once asked Rabash: “What does a Kabbalist feel when he parts with his body? After all, he already feels the soul through the point in the heart that he developed. He feels a different world through the quality of bestowal.” Rabash answered: “It’s similar to how you take off your shirt at night and throw it into the laundry, and then put on a new shirt in the morning. This is how a Kabbalist parts with his animate body and the sensations he feels through it, and continues to perceive through his soul.”

Why Does A Man Need A Woman In Kabbalah?

needTwo questions I received on spiritual partnerships:

Question: Why does a man who studies Kabbalah need a woman, and how can he “use” her the right way?

My Answer: Every person in our world has:

1) Bodily desires for food, family, and sex;
2) Social desires for wealth, power, fame, and knowledge.

The desires for family and sex are realized with a partner, either with the intention to receive pleasure egoistically, or with the intention to realize them as a commandment, or in other words, in order to attain the Creator.

The desire for spirituality is formed by the female and male parts of humanity as a whole. All men are like Adam and all women are like Eve. Therefore, one needs to see one’s partner in life as a partner on the spiritual path as well. It is possible – and good – if your partner cooperates with you in this regard.

Question: What are the best articles to read to your wife if she wants you to?

My Answer: The parts of Baal HaSulam’s and Rabash’s articles that are interesting to both of you.

What Is the Machsom?

A question I received: What exactly is the Machsom? I wanted to find a precise definition in Talmud Eser Sefirot and other technical studies, but couldn’t manage to find it. In fact, this concept doesn’t seem to exist in any article or book by Baal HaSulam or Rabash. So, my questions are:

1. Is it a technical Kabbalistic term (like Masach, for instance)?
2. If it is, why don’t the greatest Kabbalists of our generation mention it?
3. If it is not, why do you use it, and can the Machsom be explained by another non-technical term?

My Answer: The Machsom is a word that Rabash often used during our private conversations. In his public talks he used it rarely, because he never talked about the practical crossing of the Machsom. There are rare instances when it is mentioned in the text. Here’s one such instance:

תשמ”ה – מאמר כ’ 1984/85 – מאמר 20

אנו צריכים לדעת, שיש שני מפריעים, שעומדים נגד האדם ולא נותנים לעבור את המחסום, להגיע לאהבת ה’, היות שהאדם נולד עם רצון לקבל לעצמו…

Rabash’s 20th article from 1984-1985:

We have to know that there are two obstructions standing before man, preventing him from crossing the Machsom and attaining love for the Creator, because man is born with the will to receive for himself…

I advise you to look for it in the texts on your own. I’m sure that there are other instances, although they are rare.

A Song In Memory of My Teacher Rabash

A question I received (from the German blog): Lieber Rav Leithman, Das Lied welches zum Todestag des Rabash komponiert wurde habe ich gehört und war sehr gerührt, ja ich fühlte eine sehr große Verbundenheit, so, dass es fast schmerzte. Ewald Heinz Feuerstein.

Dear Rav Laitman, I heard a song that was sung on the day of mourning for Rabash, and I was very moved because I felt a very close connection to it, to the point that it was almost painful. Ewald Heinz Feuerstein.

My Answer: I am glad that you came across it. I will post this ancient Kabbalistic melody for you, which we sang during one of our meals:

Joy Brings You Closer to the Creator

A question I received: Why do I despair that I am so far from the Creator? And why do I feel deep down, that this feeling of isolation is false? I’m scared for my sanity, and it makes me cry.

My Answer: You lack the support of the environment. Or perhaps you have an environment but you are not ready to absorb the force of the society from them. Everything depends on you. Even a virtual connection can hold a person in the correct state.

Despair pushes you away from the Creator, whereas joy draws you closer. Read Shamati article #58, “Joy is a Reflection of Good Deeds.” If a person isn’t happy, then by feeling this way he blames the Creator for creating the world incorrectly and does not justify His actions. He is saying that Creator is bad, and hence he is called a sinner – not for his actions, but for his mood!

Does Soccer Have a Spiritual Root?

How Do You Avoid Becoming Relaxed On the Path? Two questions I received on soccer and Kabbalah:

Question: Soccer draws the attention of many people. What is its spiritual root? I heard that you once drove by a soccer field with Rabash, and he said that it is a special place because it brings joy and pleasure to people. Soccer is full of corporeal, egoistic desires of the fans. What kind of ascent did Rabash see in this place? Maybe his words were a joke or a parable, or is there really a spiritual root to soccer?

My Answer: What’s important is not the game of soccer, but that a person receives pleasure from life. And this pleasure, of course, comes from the Creator. There are many parables like this.

If a person’s point in the heart – the yearning for the Creator – hasn’t surfaced yet, then he exists in exile from spirituality, even without being aware of it. As long as he is in this state, he enjoys the small pleasures of this world, called “a weak glow.”

Here we are talking about people who are not yet ready for spiritual work. The Light gathers people together and gives them some contentment – and hence it is a special place. By being there, they don’t harm anyone, but on the contrary – unite with each other.

Question: What if I want to be a soccer player and a Kabbalist at the same time?

My Answer: Give it a try!

The Special Power of Kabbalah

The Special Power of KabbalahThe Upper Light shines upon one who is engaged in the study of the wisdom of Kabbalah, even though he doesn’t feel it, because he is not yet corrected in order to receive this Light. Nevertheless this illumination from afar gradually corrects him, making him fit to receive the Light within.
Baal HaSulam, Introduction to Talmud Eser Sefirot,” item 155

All the obstacles that come to a person are from the Creator, in order to push him toward spiritual development, so he will not stay satisfied with his current condition. Only for those whom the Creator wishes to bring closer does He send help by showing them that they don’t advance in spirituality, sending them hindering thoughts against the Creator.
Baal HaSulam, Shamati article, There is None Else Besides Him

The goal of creation is to please the creatures, and as long as a person doesn’t receive all the abundance that the Creator prepared for him, this means that he still hasn’t reached the goal of creation.
Rabash, article, “The Essence and Correction of the Creation”

It is man’s duty to reach the goal of creation by correcting himself. The correction lies in acquiring the intention of bestowal. To the extent one has this intention, one receives that which the Creator has prepared for him.
Rabash, article, “The Essence and Correction of the Creation”

A person should not correct anything about his externality but only his internality – his “I,” his egoism. It cannot be corrected through any actions, such as fasting and other restrictions. On the contrary, egoism loves such actions because it can be proud of them. Correction lies in feeling one’s insignificance relative one’s friends – those with whom one studies Kabbalah, but under no circumstances relative others.
Baal HaSulam, “Pri Chacham – Letters,” p.75

A small hole in the heart is enough for a person to return to the Creator, but under the condition that it will be as a needle stuck into living flesh, and not dead.
The Kotzker Rebbe (Rabbi Menachem Mendel), “There is No More Whole Broken Heart,” p.30

The holy war is not a war between people but against yourself. It’s when you strike blows against the evil inside you and tell the good in you, “Grow.”
Rav Kook, “Maamarei Reiya,” 508

Numerous false doctrines will arise before the coming of the Mashiach. You can save yourself from them only by studying The Book of Zohar every day. Even if you don’t understand anything in this book, this is already enough for cleansing the heart.
“Ohr Yasharim.” Mira Dah’ya

Studying of The Book of Zohar for one hour brings more than studying the simple commentary for a year.
“Kisseh Melech,” Tikkun 43, ch. 60

The Creator can’t have more pleasure than when people study Kabbalah. Moreover, a person was created only for the study of Kabbalah.”
Rabbi Chaim Vital, “Introduction to Shaar HaHakdamot”

While the Creator conceals Himself, He allows evil, but not to the point of the complete destruction of the world. Through this, one later reveals the oneness of the Creator and the correction of all evil by His Mighty Power.
Ramchal (Moshe Chaim Luzzato), “Da`at Tevunoth” p.185

There is no action in the world that does not come from the Upper Light.
Ramchal, Adir BaMarom, p.227

All the commandments, though they seem to talk about physical actions or verses to be pronounced, are intended only for correcting the heart, because the Creator only demands the correction of the intentions that are in the heart.

Every Person Has to Find His Own Teacher

Every Person Has to Find His Own TeacherA question I received: In a previous blog entry someone asked you: “How is it known that there is only one true source of Kabbalah?” You answered: “There can’t be several because the Creator is one.”

I fully agree with you about Berg and his shamanistic business concepts, such as selling spirituality through red strings, cameos and reading spells or blessings. But I still don’t understand why there is only one, unique and single source of Kabbalah! After all, during the times of the Second Temple there were thousands of Kabbalists. Based on the qualities of their souls, each of them taught his students differently about how to attain the Single Creator. The students had a choice.

Moreover, you have said that until the 19th century most rabbis were Baalei Hasaga (they attained spirituality), so people also had a choice.

But now you’re declaring that your path is the only correct one. Can our world really be so scanty on Kabbalists that there’s no one left but you who is

a) A Kabbalist, and

b) A revealed Kabbalist – someone whom you, as a Kabbalist, can genuinely recommend to a potential student who is still at the stage of searching for the right Teacher? And what about the verse, “There are many paths to the Creator”?

My Answer: In the process of studying Kabbalah, one often experiences doubts about the correctness of the path. This happens because the path and the goal are concealed. The path is paved with descents, and times of clarity are rare. Unlike egoistic advancement, on the path of Kabbalah you are going against yourself. This is why the question arises, “Can it be true that the worse things are, the better they are?”

When I asked Rabash about how can I be sure that he is my teacher, he replied, “You have to verify this for yourself!” In fact, even Baal HaSulam wrote in his Letters that he no longer saw any Kabbalists in his generation. I also don’t see any, other than myself and my students.

Every person has to find his own teacher. I don’t have the addresses of “Teachers-Kabbalists,” but you can easily find them through the search engines by searching the keyword “Kabbalah.”

A Song In Memory of Rabash

Today is the anniversary of my Teacher’s passing (Yahrtzeit). Rabash was a great Kabbalist, the last in the lineage of the passage of the Knowledge of the Creator, from Adam until our times. This lineage ended with Rabash, Rav Baruch Shalom HaLevi Ashlag (1906 – 1991).

We, “Bnei Baruch” (“The Sons of Baruch”), are named after him, and we reveal this knowledge (the method of the souls’ correction) to our generation, the first generation of correction. We are bringing this knowledge to the point of practical use: private and common correction, and are creating a structure for the Kabbalistic society of the future.

Here is a song called “Teacher,” composed by my student from Russia, Igor Irtishky, with lyrics by Dina Baiter.
