The Environment Creates Consciousness

Dr. Michael LaitmanIn the News (from Socioline.ru): “Psychologists and sociologists have long assumed that antisocial behavior can spread like an epidemic, but this theory has remained controversial. Experiments have shown that people often violate the accepted norms of behavior when they see that others do that. The “bad example is contagious” is interpreted broadly: seeing that someone violated one of the accepted rules, people allow themselves to violate other rules.”

According to the “the broken-window theory” of James Q. Wilson and George l. Kelling:

“At the community level, disorder and crime are usually inextricably linked, in a kind of developmental sequence. Social psychologists and police officers tend to agree that if a window in a building is broken and is left unrepaired, all the rest of the windows will soon be broken. This is as true in nice neighborhoods as in run-down ones. Window-breaking does not necessarily occur on a large scale because some areas are inhabited by determined window-breakers whereas others are populated by window-lovers; rather, one unrepaired broken window is a signal that no one cares, and so breaking more windows costs nothing.

“But vandalism can occur anywhere once communal barriers — the sense of mutual regard and the obligations of civility — are lowered by actions that seem to signal that ‘no one cares.’ We suggest that ‘untended’ behavior also leads to the breakdown of community controls. A stable neighborhood of families who care for their homes, mind each other’s children, and confidently frown on unwanted intruders can change, in a few years or even a few months, to an inhospitable and frightening jungle. A piece of property is abandoned, weeds grow up, a window is smashed. Adults stop scolding rowdy children; the children, emboldened, become more rowdy. Families move out, unattached adults move in. Teenagers gather in front of the corner store. The merchant asks them to move; they refuse. Fights occur. Litter accumulates. People start drinking in front of the grocery; in time, an inebriate slumps to the sidewalk and is allowed to sleep it off. Pedestrians are approached by panhandlers.”

My Comment: The environment shapes consciousness and then a person’s behavior, and he is not able to resist his surroundings. The ability to shape oneself according to your desire and decision comes down to finding a suitable environment that would form you. So, free will is to choose those who “mold” you.

Merging Groups

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: Let us say that there are dozens of integral learning groups in a certain neighborhood. How can they later merge into a single whole?

Answer: Today, having such a powerful mass media and ways for people to connect, we simply need to invent plenty of games, ways for people to be included mutually, like TV shows or fun attractions like panel games, when different groups meet and interact with each other. They begin to show us ways to change one another, how a person positions himself to affect others in a specific way.

Later, groups generally become diffused. They do not stay forever static like some frozen organization, community, city, dwelling, or middle-aged union. They do not. In the end, this will be a society where many people, or even everyone (I am referring to the future), will understand how they can make every situation work for them and be for the sake of others at the same time.

Once they understand this, they will see clearly how to interact and communicate with each other. In other words, any time they interact will be to help themselves and others have the best integral interconnection. They will work on being integrated with others every single moment, and thus will always feel a certain unity, which they already will feel and perceive as their and the world’s completely different state.

They will feel above our world in this unity, as if they were floating in a completely different human concentrate where different laws of behavior exist, the so-called “laws of commutation,” laws of unity and integration. By supporting each other in this and constantly being above our egoism, they begin to perceive a different kind of reality.

When a person is surrounded constantly by people who agree to play this kind of game, then this game gradually turns into a completely new kind of communication, and then the perception of a different space where, instead of receiving from others, we give to others. We work in a direction that is opposite to our current direction.

This new direction allows us to become free of our limitations. Instead of viewing every state as a state that obligates me and offers me the opportunity to take from the outside, on the contrary, I regard them as states that offer me the opportunity to come out of myself, become freer, and stop being limited and confined to myself.

Moreover, everyone else supports me in this. In the end, I will reach a comfortable, unrestricted state. It does not obligate me toward anything. On the contrary, it gives me an opportunity to feel free.

I am referring to relationships between people that we yet do not see anywhere today, but if we teach people these kinds of relationships, then in the end, they will aspire to this state. Once there are many people like this, they will overcome their egoistic resistance and communicate with each other above their egoism in a new mode. They will perceive a higher reality in it. We need to bring them to this.

My Comment: Politicians and military leaders always used scientists for their purposes, throwing them scraps from the table and getting what they needed themselves. Once, Plato and Aristotle warned scientists against disclosing science to politicians, egoists. But scientists couldn’t resist, they wanted power and money themselves. Thus, they sold themselves and serve the rulers until this day. In reality, science must be hidden, as the science of Kabbalah, and become revealed only to the extent of its correct use.

The Man Of The Universe

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: Suppose we have an integral study group, which needs some guidance, to be told what it will deal with, what process it will go through. What should we start with?

Answer: For the new members there should be talks about the world, about the new trend, about evolution based on the ego, etc. First we have to prepare a serious theoretical basis of the practical perspective of human history, of society, and of ourselves. A person is gradually brought to the question of “what’s next?” Suppose we have explored the modern world, our development, the development of man and all of nature, and where it’s leading us. We don’t even see the lack of free choice, the dynamics of our development, and the collapse of the ego as the engine, as the source of our life and of our advancement. We reach a crisis, what’s next?

Next, of course, there are different goals in nature. We are now at such an intersection in which we have to totally change our attitude towards the world because the ego with which we grew before has suddenly stopped working.

So where is it leading us? It’s leading us to its negation. We see that in all the problems, in depression, drugs, terrorism, and even the crisis in the family and society. The main thing that hurts us most of all is the economic crisis because we, as beasts, need to eat and to supply our basic needs. Here we find ourselves in a state where we will not be able to supply the basic needs, especially in the world that we have created around us, a world that is a huge urban jungle, in which we all have to do something in order to get what we need.

It’s very easy to destroy such a world. It’s so sensitive to the slightest inability to adapt that millions of people can find themselves cut off from food, water, and the supply of energy and other resources. We cannot even imagine how delicate and fragile the world we’ve created is, and if something goes wrong, just a little, it will collapse like a house of cards. All this will collapse and what about us?

As a result of our development, we have brought ourselves to this very unstable state. You can imagine cities around the world with a population of 20 million people, but even in cities with a population of 2 million people, what will happen when these people are cut off from food, electricity, water, or a sewage system?! This is the end!

There is a need for mutual cooperation among countries, without which we cannot manage. No country can provide its own needs by itself any more. So we can see that the world is really very fragile and unsafe. We are showing people all this, explaining the general trend and why nature and the ego have brought us to this point so that we will rise above the ego, because in the present state we are unable to adapt to the global integral nature. How can we be mutually connected to it, meaning being included in its integrality, in its sphere, in harmony, with our ego?

This is why we need guidance by which we can show people that there is another way to develop. When we psychologically change ourselves and people, we will see the world not from an egoistic perspective, but from an integral altruistic perspective. We’ll be able to form a totally different society that will be in harmony with all the natural laws. And then having no choice, a person, the family, the society, the state, civilization, and all of humanity will reach such harmony with nature that we’ll recover all the fragile balance on earth, internally and externally, with the rest of nature. This is possible only if a person changes from an individualist into a person of the universe. This is what we have to bring to people.

Now let’s see how this can be done: Can we leave the individualistic, egoistic perspective of the world? Can we change the egoistic glasses and see everything through integral lenses? What will I gain from that? In other words, I have to take care of everyone. Is it possible? I shouldn’t take myself into account, is that possible? Do I have to totally “leave” myself? What about me and my family, and my relatives? How can we aim at mutual cooperation with others so that we can form a unified society?

What does unified mean? It is when each of us doesn’t feel himself, but only the society, like ants, who only understand their cooperation. None of them has a separate role, a separate goal, size or priority, but all are operated by a collective mind, a program, and meticulously carry out all the orders of the program. Is this possible? This is where nature is leading us. On such a level we will reach total harmony with it.

What do we gain from that? Although it sounds a bit like a fantasy, we are gaining the feeling of eternity, the feeling of infinity, because all our feelings today are within the limited ego, while here we move on to a different feeling, outside ourselves. Then a person doesn’t feel his own beastly body anymore, by rising to the next level, to the next dimension called “human,” which we didn’t feel before. He isn’t in his “animal” anymore, but rises to an upper level. Until today we were actually more developed animals.

The Birth Of Something New

Dr. Michael LaitmanIn our current global world we are all connected whether we like it or not, and this is dangerous because it can lead to an explosion, a world war. There are already talks about it, but there is no solution.

 

If the ego has already ended its development and doesn’t allow us to advance further, then the pressure that expands this integral system, which is totally mutually dependent, may bring about anything. And we will be ready to do anything just to break this connection. This is the uniqueness of our times.

Endless research studies show that we have reached a special point in our development that is unprecedented in human history. In the past, the growing ego constantly pushed us from behind, and we knew that life would be good for us or for our children. But today we don’t expect our children to have a better life than we have. On the contrary, soon we will totally deplete all the natural resources, pollute the environment, and run out of fresh water and clean air. There is no place where we can develop.

This crisis is the essence of a new humanity. It isn’t by chance that the word “crisis” (ρίσις) means birth in ancient Greek, a turning point from which a new life begins. So by examining the current situation, we have to understand: What is new here? What is being revealed to us?

The whole problem is that until now we have developed through one, negative force that molded different needs in us and pushed us forward to fulfill them. We lack a second, positive force that pulls and unites. This force doesn’t exist in our nature, in the human essence. No matter what we do, it is all meant for personal gain, to use others for our own benefit.

So where can we attain this second force? After all, our body and all natural systems are built on the cooperation of two opposing forces: plus and minus, hot and cold, pressure and

vacuum, etc. In the inanimate, vegetative, and animate nature there is always one against the other, and life develops in the balance between these forces, in harmony, in the right absorption and emission. But on the “human” level and on the level of our consciousness the positive force doesn’t exist, only the negative force: I constantly want to use whatever I see and receive what I feel that I lack.

Today we are at the peak of this trend, and at this point we must realize that we lack the other positive force. It will not come to us instinctively, naturally; we have to develop it ourselves. Many scientists are studying this problem. In the ARI Institute we are in contact with thousands of experts throughout the world. They all agree about this issue, that without this positive force we will not be able to go on. But where can we find it? The answer is simple: a person has to stabilize his source by building a new society.

It is common knowledge that we develop by our society. A child left in a forest will grow like an animal and will not develop into a person. A person is the result of the human society he grows in. This is why we are so concerned about the friends our children play with, the school they go to, and who they see; society molds us.

If we want to create a new man that lives in harmony with others, then we have to establish the right environment for him in order to teach him the integral way of thinking that is based on bestowal and not on receiving.

Today as the mutual global connection is growing stronger, we already feel the connections among countries. In the future the social pressure will also increase. So we simply have to take care of ourselves.

Everything depends on whether we establish an environment. No one is happy about the current situation. The conflicts everywhere are more intense and the despair is growing. There is no other choice. It is time to develop the integral education, to draw the positive force. Then we will discover that the current crisis is revealing negativity only so that positivity will be placed opposite to it. In this way our society (on every level, up to the global level), like all of nature, will be based on two forces: the positive and the negative. In the middle, in the connection, in the balance between them, we will find new life, the true “human” level.

We will feel the harmony in nature that is concealed from us since we are working with only one force. By rising above the inanimate, vegetative, and animate nature, and working on the human level by independently acquiring the positive force and balancing it with the negative force, we will become acquainted with nature’s perfect system, and discover the forces that manage us behind the screen of matter. We will suddenly discover this huge system that created life and that manages it through evolution. We will begin to develop consciously by discovering these forces and advance with them.

So our current state is actually our birth. Everything depends on us, and on whether we will manage to organize the integral education. It isn’t by chance that the current crisis is global and varied; it includes everyone and everything, and we have to find the general balance point to compensate for it.

Then, we will truly feel happy. We will begin to discover nature’s eternity, and will feel that we are on the “human” level, which is independent of our body. In our consciousness we will rise above it and discover nature’s “level of knowledge” that manages the whole universe. Many scientists are talking about this today, especially those who deal with quantum physics.

Eventually the integral education will open up new horizons for us in science, culture, society, and family by which we will acquire and create a new dimension of life, and promise ourselves a better future.

The Complexity Of Integral Interaction

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: While studying in the group, people feel a kind of embarrassment because new tools, mechanisms, and experience are required in the mutual integral cooperation. A person has gotten used to living and working according to a certain program.

Suddenly he discovers that the program has changed. People remain in the circle and their role is simply to carry on a conversation between them, to get to know one another, to see other people. A person begins to worry and to ask: “Tell me what to do? Where are we headed?”

Answer: The point is that they find themselves closed among themselves, and we must develop a new approach to a new integral dialog with one another.

A person really feels concern and uneasiness. He suddenly sees that he isn’t ready for the mutual integral cooperation because he was taught differently.

The interesting thing about the mutual cooperation is that we don’t just discover our interdependence, but that there can be no hierarchy here, and this is very complicated. We are used to thinking that someone is a bit above me and that I am a bit lower, I can hide and when the time comes, I can come out and declare that I don’t exist. This is our ordinary social communication.

Here, however, we have to establish a new infrastructure that has to be among us and not in each of us. We don’t have to arrange people hierarchically, as each one represents a small individual part, which together make up all of society. In the mutual integral cooperative society, it is what we form outside ourselves, something that is around us, that is external, among us. Each one enters this society as a small integral part and dissolves among the others.

Therefore, people find it very hard to experience this exit from themselves: I am in society, as part of it; “I” and “they” are the same thing. There is no such thing as “I,” and later there is no such thing as “we” either, because “we” is just a sum, a number, while an integral is the sum in which all the elements add up so that they are not separate entities that come together, but rather a totally new whole in which the individuality disappears and the unity appears.

This is a difficult experience and not everyone can easily become accustomed to it, or shall I say, bear it. One must go through much pain, because you seem to be cutting yourself off of yourself. You enter a group and lose yourself inside it: “Where is the ‘I,’ where are all my elements, my basic inclinations?” It is as if you don’t exist and the result is something general. Moreover, it isn’t our “sum,” we don’t arrive at some common opinion, but suddenly there is a partnership born in us, which exists on its own.

I understand the people who reach that and who feel a little bad, you have to get used to it.

They need a serious theoretical preparation and practical studies. We have to show them that this is what our society that was born of one element, of an initial drop of semen somewhere in the past generations, should be like. It has grown to several billion people who now have to reunite. They don’t destroy themselves and their functioning on the corporeal level, but they should all come to the state in which they will all be one image of one single creature.

Nature compels us to precisely this closeness, to where we feel everyone else as one whole, including ourselves of course. There will be no integrals, no differentials, and no sums. It will be something that is totally new, a new society that grows from the terrible separated state of the global crisis.

Speech – Thought – Action

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe correction that we are supposed to build above the animate level in order to reach the speaking level originates not only from our bodies, but also from the human being within us. However, we still implement the correction process though our bodies, since a body is a “tool” for correction.

We relate to each other (both negatively and positively) through speech, thoughts and actions.

“Speech” stands for self-persuasion. It can be referred to inner speech, since a person constantly talks with himself; it can also mean “practical” (outgoing) speech that addresses others and conveys ideas on how and in what direction we all should move.

The necessity to bestow leads us to attainment of mutual love; it is a process that we all have to go through.

“Thoughts” go before speech and actions. First, we have to formulate a thought that stems from our inner calculations that we obtain from within ourselves as well as from our surroundings, society, and teachers.

So, thoughts should be formulated before anything else, and then they have to be transformed into speech. Any kind of oral expression will always remain only “beautiful words” until we enable them with “force” by applying actions.

“Actions” mean devotion of every single hour that is not spent satisfying our animate needs to integral education and upbringing, dissemination and work for the sake of others. Our task is to lead people to at least a decent standard of life, at least above the poverty level, a fair distribution, and where no one feels that they are deprived of their rights.

Thus, our thoughts and speech should be oriented towards building a new balanced society that will allow us to maintain an integral level and stay within the analog system. In our thoughts, we allow our surroundings to influence us; we constantly submit ourselves to a stronger integral environment. After formulating internal thoughts, we implement them though speech, that is, we shape our concepts and informational systems. This is the point where actions come forward. It’s the time when we basically influence others through education, upbringing, and by elevating worldwide living standards so that nobody suffers from hunger and affliction.

This is the essence of our work. This is how we approach balance with nature: the goal that we constantly concentrate on. Stability among us allows us to get into a state of balance with Nature and with its universal laws. As a result, we create a “round” perfect system.

Here, our evolution stops: Our development started at a time when life emerged on the face of Earth, and at this point it reaches its final equilibrium.

It doesn’t mean that everything will be over and the Sun will stop shining. It’s not that we cannot wait several billion more years before it happens. We are talking about the end of correction of a human being: If we achieve balance with nature and reach perfect harmony, we won’t experience any pressure from Nature anymore, and thus our lives will become ideal.

Let’s hope that we approach such a state within our sensations and be able to prepare our children and grandchildren to attain this state. It is within our power.

Balancing On The Path Of Love

Dr. Michael LaitmanOur task is to create an integral system among us all. This means that we have to stay inside a suitable “wrapping,” that is, the right surroundings that train us. This is how a real Man should be brought up. We are talking about a man who reached the human level of development. This type of person evolved from a “wild cave man.” Yet, at this time, we still relate to each other as “primordial” people.

Through good relationships, compassion, reciprocity and mutual bestowal we implement the following two types of behavior:

  1. Caring relationships at a human level, on our material plane, and
  2. Benevolent interaction with Nature and Its common law of mutual bestowal and love.

We go through the process that was built by Nature and which originates from the common force. Therefore, we obtain support and approval from the following factors:

  1. Good relationships within human society, and
  2. Balance with Nature.

Both directions are effective.

At this point, mistakes and imbalances are quite possible. The main thing is to retain stability between us and Nature. For example, Green party activists only care about flora and fauna, and as we see, they don’t succeed in preserving nature. It is impossible to keep nature in a good state without first establishing adequate relationships at the human level; these two processes are symbiotic. When people advance and improve, they positively influence everything around them. They start to defend inanimate, vegetative, and animate nature and limit consumption by using only the resources that allow humankind to feed itself without exceeding the limit. In return, Nature will regain its equilibrium. We will eventually witness that everything we have ruined previously by destroying Nature’s elements will gradually revive and harmonize.

In summary; if we had to choose between two directions, humanity and nature, and decide where to start, we would have to consider the human factor before anything else. To start we have to provide the right kind of education and upbringing; only then can we transition from loving our neighbors to loving Nature. This is the correct vector of our development.

However, the stage of human relationships requires a thorough understanding that in the end we will have to attain equilibrium with the universal law of Nature, that is, with the general process of evolution as a whole. After we define our preferences between both factors and choose one of them, we should still keep in mind that it is essential to consider them both in our calculations.

This is how we build a schema for the process: First, we attain love towards humans, and afterward, we reach out to universal love that is inherent in Nature. This is the way to complete our personal correction.

Our World Through The Prism Of Spirituality

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: When I try to see the world through the point of unity, I feel that joy and material objects lose their importance to me. What are the criteria that define the significance of your activities? How do we all “build the world?” Do we have to completely rearrange our system of values?

Answer: We should reorganize our system of values anyway. Our goal is to strive to achieve compliance with nature, that is, earn our living, stay alive, and attain harmony with nature without looking at or waiting for others while they go through their personal crises, their ups and downs. If a person rigidly, firmly, and actually places himself into this condition and tries to harmonize his life with nature, nothing can harm him.

It’s normal that this kind of attitude to life makes you happy. Besides, you should “tune” into the right type of business activities and correct relationships with family and the rest of the world. In other words, you should make up your mind about how to rearrange things that constitute your life and make them more rational.

I think that the entire world is involuntarily going this way. Gradually, it becomes obvious that, one way or another, we’ll either change the world and our personal state in it through a clear realization of the situation we are already in or nature will force us to do so by forcing us to limit our actions to such a degree that we will be cut off from the future if we don’t bother to understand that our current approach doesn’t work. However, it’s a very long and painful process.

I hope that dissemination of our knowledge will lead people to understand that only under the above-stated condition will a person reach the most rational and comfortable existence, and begin to sense, above everything else, the higher reality through the notion of an integral world.

A person enters the state of unity and eternity. He can clearly feel it. Matter dissolves and falls apart like shagreen leather. We witness a totally different world, the world of forces that our senses perceive to be a certain picture. It’s very real and, in fact, is truly close to us.

In my opinion, you should change your everyday life, the world around you, and the work you are doing in accordance with the level at which you are. However, it has to be done only to the degree of your understanding of spiritual methodology while transitioning to a higher step and becoming equivalent to it.

The World Is Left Without Work

Dr. Michael LaitmanIn the News (from The Wall Street Journal Blog): “The world needs to create about 200 million jobs to reach full employment.

“That’s one finding from a new report released Friday by the International Labor Organization and the World Bank. The two groups, based on a request from the Group of 20 advanced and developing economies, are unveiling a database that tallies policy responses to the financial crisis and global economic downturn. …

“The employment tally found that the world lost 27 million jobs between 2007 and the height of the crisis in 2009. But labor force growth adds about 40 million people to the global labor market each year, and overall economic growth—even before the crisis—hadn’t been strong enough to absorb them. That created a long-run jobs gap of 177 million, on top of the 27 million jobs lost in the downturn. …

“The impact of the crisis on employment has been deep, and with no appreciable recovery, particularly in the developed countries. Table 2 shows that between 2007 and 2009—at the height of the crisis—an estimated 27 million jobs were lost globally. Half of these jobs were lost in the advanced economies, five million in East Asia, three million in Latin America and the Caribbean, and one million in South Asia. …

“The rate of youth unemployment rose globally from 11.7 percent in 2007 to 12.8 percent in 2009, the advanced economies being hit particularly hard, where this rate jumped from 12.5 percent to 17.3 percent over this period.” Source: ILO/World Bank

“While the world experienced ‘an unprecedented widespread policy response to the crisis,’ the report says, ‘policy responses led to a recovery in GDP growth but not a significant increase in jobs.’

“Among the study’s other findings:

–Policies of high-income countries focused on access to credit, while low- and middle-income nations prioritized direct job creation and employment incentives.

–About 55% of high-income countries used unconventional monetary policy vs. 33% of low- and middle-income countries.

–About 86% of high-income countries in the sample used a fiscal stimulus, while 84% of low- and middle-income countries did so.”

My Comment: The solution is to restructure the whole system of a society based on growing consumption. If our system of consumption were really unlimited, then there would have been no end to “America.” But since we exist in a limited, finite system of society, resources, and environmental limits, the “pyramid” must fall apart.
