The Principle of Existence of Humanity

Baal HaSulam, Building the Future Society, Chapter 3, Item 8: The entire world is one family. The framework of communism according to the Torah should ultimately encircle the entire world in an equal standard of living to everybody.

We need to reach a level where we will have the feeling that the whole world is one family, that everyone around me is a relative, people who are close and dear to me, and even more dear to me than I am to myself. All of humanity must exist by this principle.

However, the actual process is a gradual one. Each nation whose majority accepts these basic elements practically, and who have already been brought up to bestow upon their fellow person and will have a sound cause for fuel, may enter the framework of the international communism right away.

By its natural development, nature pushes us to consciously change our attitude toward our neighbor.

Question: What is the relation between the quality of bestowal of nature itself (the Creator) and the connection between people?

Answer: That we are trying to implement the law of universal love, which is the Creator Himself, in society so that it is interconnected according to the law of the Creator.

Then if you ask, “What is the Creator?”, I will answer you, “Look at how our society is assembled, how it connects within itself. This assembly is the Creator.”

Gradual Entry

Baal HaSulam “Building the Future Society”: 6. It is forbidden to nationalize the property before the public reaches this moral level. The collective will not have fuel for work before there is a reliable moral factor in the public.

One must enter the new society gradually. It is possible to get rid of the personal and give it to the care of society only to the extent that society is ready.

Question: And who determines that society is already ready?

Answer: Only the people themselves, the relations between them, the state between them. In no case should it be done irresponsibly or under the influence of some ideals. All this should be clearly visible from life.

Kabbalah —Guide for the Society of the Future

Baal HaSulam “Building The Future Society”: 3…they must establish the moral level of the majority of the public on a basis that will necessitate and guarantee that the corrected communism will never be corrupted.

People must understand that all the laws of a future society are absolute and eternal. Only then will they start on their own, consciously keeping everything.

Kabbalah, as a method of attainment of the goal of creation, (the global law of the universe) is the only basis assured to raise the level of the collective to the moral level of “working according to the ability and receiving according to the need.”

The wisdom of Kabbalah explains the implementation of the methodology for creating a new society: how to do it, how to implement all laws and rules in it. In practice, it is a guide for the society of the future.

Question: Can this be somehow proved?

Answer: You can’t prove it, people just won’t have any other choice. Based on all their problems, they will see that only this wisdom gives the right advice.

Understanding the Needs of Society

Baal HaSulam, “Building the Future Society” Chapter 3, Item1: Communism is an ideal, meaning it is moral. The goal “to work according to one’s ability and receive according to one’s needs” testifies to that.

If we live in an absolutely harmonious society of the future, where everyone is mutually connected, then everyone thinks about what he can give to this society. He must understand its needs and how he can make up for them.

There must be a serious connection between the members of society so that they do only what is necessary and do nothing in excess, since by doing so they harm nature.

That is, I do everything that others need, everything that is required of me. Every member of society does the same. Thus, we achieve complete harmony between us.

Question: Is the principle, from each according to one’s ability, a manifestation of the quality of bestowal? I use all my abilities for the sake of society. Then does to each according to one’s needs mean that I measure my needs and receive only what I need?

Answer: Or society measures them. What’s the difference? In this case, I completely trust the society.

For the Sake of the Creator

Baal HaSulam, “Building the Future Society”: An antagonist might still claim that I have thus far only demonstrated that one must serve one’s fellow person, but where is the practical proof that one must adhere to this precept for the sake of the Creator?

Question: We can still understand what the fulfillment of the law of nature “for the sake of people” is: “you are for my sake, I am for your sake,” and together we are building a good society for the future. And what does it mean to fulfill this law for the sake of the Creator who is in concealment?

Answer: If I strictly follow the instructions of the Kabbalists, then I feel like I am in a state where the Creator is in front of me and I can work in partnership with Him.

Question: But the Creator is concealed from me. How can I do something for His sake if I don’t feel His actions?

Answer: The Creator is a condition that the wisdom of Kabbalah sets before you, and a teacher explains to you how to behave.

If you fulfill these conditions, you begin to feel that there are positive and negative forces in nature, and they constantly act on you: the positive force on one side, and the negative force on the other, and there is contradiction or agreement, etc.

Question: That is, the Creator is the goal and the neighbor is the means. If I find the strength or ability to put the needs of my neighbor above my own in myself, then the quality of the Creator is manifested in me?

Answer: Of course, the quality of bestowal. At the same time, you begin to feel that you exist at the level of the Creator according to the law of equivalence of form.

To Reach the State of Bestowal

Question: Nature obliges us to comply with the law of reception, and we constantly care about satisfying our own needs. This is normal, we are created that way. The second law “to give to society, to take care of society, of the neighbor” is hidden from us.

However, the Creator obliges us to obey this law by sending us blows and suffering; we just do not associate them with the failure to comply with this law. So we don’t have freedom of choice after all? As Baal HaSulam writes: Our absolute duty is to completely obey the law of nature.

Answer: No, a person is not strictly obligated to this, but only pushed to want him or her to adopt the law of bestowal consciously, realizing its need.

What does realizing mean? When I am my own, one might say, civic consciousness, I understand that I need to do this. Not for my own sake, but for the sake of others and the Creator. I accept this law and execute it not involuntarily, but because I realize how much good I can do with this deed for others and for the Creator. Just for the sake of them! And in no case for my own sake!

This does not make me an even more developed animal, standing on the same level with other animals because a person does not have automatic instinctive fulfillment of the laws of nature; one must fulfill them oneself. The fact is that I must reach a completely different level, the quality of bestowal and love, not the instinctive fulfillment of the laws of nature. By this I rise to the level of the Creator.

A Person’s Responsibility

Baal HaSulam, “Building the Future Society”: The precept of reception requires only little regard as the punishment for it is given instantly. Thus, we will never neglect it. However, the punishment for the second precept, that of bestowal upon society, is not collected instantaneously. It rather comes to us indirectly.

Question: Society does not demand that we bestow; therefore, we do not comply with the law of bestowal to society. Nature punishes us for this. But since the punishment doesn’t come immediately, we do not comply with this law.

Why is the law implicit? If I clearly saw that I did not give to society and society or nature would immediately punish me, I would act differently.

Answer: Then you would be an animal, not a human. The difference between a human and an animal is that the animal is completely subject to the laws of nature. It has no freedom of choice whether to fulfill or not fulfill them. An animal does everything instinctively, under the harsh influence of nature, without asking any questions.

Humans, on the contrary, possess the free will to either carry out the laws of nature or not. However, the problem is that a person was created in such a way that he or she does not want to fulfill nature’s laws.

Nature, the Creator, wants a person to develop oneself to the point of understanding that it is one’s obligation to carry out the laws of nature. Not even for one’s own sake, but for the sake of others, so that the person will become the same as nature, which gives, fulfills, gives birth, and develops.

Nature’s Goal

Baal HaSulam, “Building the Future Society”: We have already said that nature necessitates that the human species lead a social life. This is simple. However, we should examine the commandments that nature compels us to follow as a result of that state, meaning that of leading a social life.

Generally speaking, there are but two commandments (precepts) we should engage with in society. These can be defined by the names “reception and bestowal”. It means that each member is obligated by nature to receive his or her needs from society, and also benefit society by means of his or her work. If one breaks any of these two precepts, he shall be punished mercilessly.

Question: Which two laws are being described? What are we receiving? What are we giving? After all, this can be interpreted in different ways.

Answer: In nature there is a force of receiving and a force of bestowal. These two forces must be balanced. They can be interpreted any way you wish, but you must understand that the laws of nature are unyielding, absolute, and do not depend on our interpretation. Therefore, we must figure out how to clearly identify them, and learn to implement them so that we do not cause ourselves too much harm.

The laws of nature evolve from its inanimate level where both forces, positive and negative, constantly evolve and reach a certain equilibrium between themselves. First in atoms, molecules, etc., and then in plants, in living organisms, creatures, and then at the level of thinking, perception, and awareness. This is the fourth level also known as the human level.

We must understand and comply with all these laws so there is balance between the force of receiving and the force of bestowal so that everything would work in balance. This is the task that nature presented before us.

Caring about Each Other

Baal HaSulam, “The Love of God and Love of Man”: It is clear beyond doubt that if 600,000 men have no other engagement in life but to stand guard and see that no need is left unsatisfied in their friends, and they even do it with true love, with all their soul and might, there is absolutely no doubt that there will not be a need in any person in the nation to worry about his own sustenance, for he will have 600,000 loving and loyal people watching over him so not a single need is left unsatisfied.

Question: We are speaking about some kind of society since one person cannot do this?  A person needs to see such examples, and not only examples, but these kinds of relationships among people?

Answer: Naturally. Mutual guarantee is when everyone backs each other up, mutually guaranteeing for each other when each one thinks of others rather than of oneself, this is the law of mutual guarantee.

Question: Baal HaSulam later writes that a certain number of people is required to carry out the law of the mutual guarantee. Why is that?

Answer: It is because one person cannot provide himself with all that he needs. However, if a certain number of people are concerned about it, which depends on the time we live in, our lifestyle, and so on, then we have nothing to worry about. Only if we care about others do we not need to worry about ourselves.

Remark: However, Baal HaSulam writes that even if a single person falls into egoism and starts thinking only about himself, everyone else also stop caring about each other.

My Comment: Here we are talking about a perfect system, as Baal HaSulam describes absolute laws. In general, this is how it should be.

Rabash, “Concerning the Importance of Society”: Therefore, in matters of work on the path of truth, one should isolate oneself from other people. This is because the path of truth requires constant strengthening, since it is against the view of the world. The view of the world is knowing and receiving, whereas the view of Torah is faith and bestowal.

Question: Will people leave the group of the last generation?

Answer: They will leave because in the group of the last generation one needs to make great efforts to constantly make progress.

The fact is that when you are in psychological groups or groups engaged in spiritual practices, then the movement takes place on the basis of knowledge or development of the method.

However, in the Kabbalistic group, the egoistic engine constantly operates and it kind of pushes you out of the group. If you do not constantly work against it, then you do not rise above it and cannot advance. Therefore, in the Kabbalistic group, there is always a need for additional efforts, and one cannot stand still. This is what forces a person to advance.

Question: Why is it that when a person is taken out of the group, he seems to go against the group and/or the method?

Answer: He must justify himself egoistically, so he turns against the group he was in. He wants to show that he is right and they are wrong. He thus tries to find flaws in the group to prove his point.

When a person comes to the group, the point in the heart, which is awakened from above, speaks within him. He suddenly feels that his soul is here.

Then, to stay in place, he needs to make an effort. This is the place of spiritual work. He holds on somehow, for some time, but if he does not make serious efforts, he is drawn away from the path.

Question: How can one make an effort to clear out all the opinions that a person absorbed during his life?

Answer: Everything is written in the Kabbalistic sources. They are written for this purpose.
