A Step Forward

Dr. Michael LaitmanWe should always try to remember that everything that happens to us is not blind fate, but rather comes from the Creator, and there is none else besides Him. If I suddenly remember the Creator, it isn’t by chance either, but it is because this is what the Creator wants, and so He reminds me of that. Therefore, I should be thankful that I am given the feeling of the special treatment that is given to me from Above, and I should respond accordingly. This means that the Creator has brought me near Him.

This approximation can be felt as good or as bad. The feeling is in the desire to receive, and if it is a good feeling, I have to work above it and try to do something for the Creator’s benefit.

A good feeling is a problem since our desire to receive feels pleasure in it and is filled with pride. I enjoy or am simply in a good mood for having filled my desire with respect, control, and knowledge. In such conditions it is hard for me to know why I am suddenly drawn to the Creator: perhaps it is because my desire to receive feels good now and it pushes me forward so that the Creator will fill my pride, my desire for control and respect.

It is much easier to attribute myself to the Creator when I don’t feel fulfillment, but rather feel darkness. Then I don’t receive any compensation in my desire to receive. In such cases, even if I make the slightest effort and want to adhere to the Creator without receiving any pleasure for it, I will already be above my desire to receive, which didn’t receive any reward.

It turns out that weak people should be led through the darkness so that from the darkness it will be easier for them to rise and advance in “faith above reason.” Since they don’t receive anything within reason, everything is in the dark. This is how a person is allowed to grow.

However, great people are given the hardening of the heart; they are tried by experiencing success in money, respect, knowledge, and control. Then a person feels the Light, meaning the filling in all these desires, but he has to rise above it and to adhere to the Creator, not for the reward in his desire to receive. This is very hard work.

It says: “call Him when He is near.” But near what, is it near my desire to receive or near my ability to rise above it?

Perhaps the Creator is sending me an unpleasant feeling, but by that wants to bring me closer and to help me reach Him above my desire to receive. By giving me different fillings in my corporeal egoistic desire, He doesn’t become closer to me. On the contrary, He draws away. He may be closer to me if despite all the egoistic temptations I adhere to Him more strongly.

Everything is evaluated with regard to a person who checks and measures his states. The main thing is how he interprets all the states and rises above them by justifying the Creator who wants to bring him closer to Him. If a person understands that, then no matter what comes along, he receives any state as the most optimal state to get closer to the Creator. Thus they become close to one another.

Under The Control Of Concealment

Dr. Michael LaitmanWe are under the control of concealment, which means that we don’t feel the One operating and managing us, the One awakening our thoughts and desires. Thus we feel as if we ourselves are operating from within our thoughts and desires.

This means that if I did something and succeeded, then that’s my success. If I didn’t succeed, then it’s my fault or from within my ego, I begin to blame my destiny, or my surroundings.

The concealment is given to us to overcome it and to discover the One who is operating us and not just operating us, but operating us kindly. This means the concealment has several shades, and we need to discover the force that operates us. Thus if we want freedom of choice in our efforts, exertion, and actions being ours, it is possible only if we act towards the disclosure of the Creator.

And we perform the rest of the actions because that’s the way the Creator directs us. And it is only in relation to His disclosure that He leaves us some open space since He awaits this from us and wants to be disclosed as the one and only force that is good and does good.

Thus everything that takes place in life, both bad and good, all kinds of situations that occur, the person receives as correct and helpful towards the disclosure of the Creator. And then he sees that he has the ability to act at every moment.

And even more than that, while he feels that he is detached from the Creator, actually he is the closest to Him. It is then that he feels a need to reveal the Creator.

Why is a person given the feeling that he is lacking adhesion to the Creator? This is since he is weak and can’t awaken by himself but needs awakening. And when the Creator awakens him, it is called that the person becomes close to Him.

It needs to be understood and clear to a person when he receives some kind of situation and responds to it that there is none else besides Him, and all that is in a person and his world was sent to him from above. And his role is only to find the deficiency for the disclosure of the root of everything that happens, the reasons for everything. This means to discover the upper force, the Creator, the Keter (Crown).

This kind of prayer and demand must always be in a person so that he will discover the reason for each state that comes to him

Great Light Instead Of A Small Spark

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: If the spiritual spark has such a great force, then why isn’t a person giving it as a whole, and instead constantly fluctuates, sometimes rising and sometimes falling?

Answer: It’s because a person’s responsibility is to establish a correct connection between the desire to enjoy and the spiritual spark. On one side, there’s the Creator, the spiritual spark, and on the other side is the creature, the desire to enjoy. And I need to connect one with the other, to clothe one in another.

The desire to enjoy is our natural material, the real me. But now, the spiritual spark illuminates me and I lose my head, not knowing what to strive for, to some spiritual world that’s who-knows-where. A person, having felt this draw for the first time, loses balance and a sense of reality. This is why in our days, our whole world seems fragile and distraught.

And our job is to reveal a great Light of NRNHY instead of a spark, and to attain the entire depth of the desire and to connect them together, for that desire to acquire the form of the Light and clothe in it. Then it will become a vessel or vestments for the Light, and we’ll reveal not a small spark, but Light 620 times more powerful.

The Debtors

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: Will the division into internal and external parts, between “Israel” and the “nations of the world” be kept when the whole world reaches the end of correction?

Answer: No. The letters of the Hebrew word “Israel” stand for Li Rosh (I have a head). This is the order of the general correction—the one who is evoked and is given a special desire is called “Israel,” and he must take care of the whole world serving as the link between the Creator and the created beings. It isn’t an ordinary desire since the “point in the heart” manages it by the connection with the Creator. The attribute of bestowal was inserted into this desire, the posterior of Nefesh of Holiness. This is the meaning of the “Israel,” Yashar – El (straight to the Creator). It isn’t about certain people, but rather about a special type of desire that is connected to the Creator since it has the discernment of what bestowal is. Although it is concealed and shattered, it still exists.

How can the desires in which this spark, this discernment of bestowal, doesn’t exist be corrected? It is possible if they add Israel as their “head;” if the two parts connect and work together.

The whole world is the essence of the desire to receive that must be corrected. But it can only do it through connection with another desire in which there is a spark of bestowal. Therefore the “nations of the world” are not required to correct themselves. On the other hand, they feel sorrow and pain since “Israel” doesn’t correct them.

This is where the hatred that the world feels towards Israel stems from. Of course, no one perceives it, but subconsciously, according to their nature, these people feel it and express their claims openly.

The correction is the role of those who belong to “Israel.” They have to correct their attitude towards the nations of the world as soon as possible. Actually, there is nothing to correct in “Israel” themselves, except for the part of the “nations of the world” in them. If “Israel” process these desires in them correctly, they will understand how to treat others. Speaking in Kabbalistic terms AHP de Bina explains to Bina how it should treat ZON.

Thus we must first correct “the nations of the world” in us, our external part, which will allow us to connect with the internal part of the world. This is the order of correction. It is our duty, and if we don’t make efforts to carry it out as soon as possible, troubles are soon to come. The time has come, and the nations of the world will begin to pressure us since the mutual inclusion that was created as a result of the exile allows them to feel that Israel owe them.

It says: “Why was it called Mt. Sinai? Since the hatred of the nations of the world descended from it.” “Since Israel received the method of correction. So where do all our troubles come from? From Israel, since they do not fulfill what they have received.” The Torah, the method, obliges us immediately, while the upper force manages the nations of the world, and so their hate is justified.

But we are advancing “against the current,” hoping that the troubles will go away by themselves without correction on our part. It’s nonsense. After all, we are dealing with the force that evokes the correction. We mustn’t even ask or pray that the hatred that nations of the world feel towards us will disappear from the world; we should only exert ourselves so that it will be corrected. Here too, it isn’t because it’s an unpleasant phenomenon, but on the contrary, we have to be thankful for it since it evokes us to turn to the Creator.

So it’s an oxymoron.

Happy Childhood In The Shadow Of The Creator

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: What does it mean to work above reason?

Answer: Work above reason means bestowal. That is, I want to take the form of a giver, like the Creator, to become a loving person, to leave my ego and make use of myself for the good of my neighbor, to unite with others in order to exit myself. It means that I appreciate bestowal more than my own qualities of reception.

First of all, I want to break free from the power of my selfish desires and to rise above it. It means escaping from “Egyptian slavery” and reaching the quality of Bina above Malchut. When I become free and rise above my ego, which can no longer grab my legs and drag me back, now I even can begin working with this desire within it.

The stages of embryo (Ibur) and feeding (Yenika) is a rise above my desire to enjoy, but the stage of adulthood is working within this desire. Work on the desire to enjoy is in fear, in bestowing in order to bestow (Hafetz Hesed), in the properties of Bina, by becoming included into the Creator, staying in His shadow like a baby clinging to his mother and fully entrusting himself to her and thus receiving the power to rise above his ego.

Then, when the child grows up, he can get in touch with his egoism and begin working with it. This is called a return to love.

A System For The Injection Of The Light

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: If the forefathers were corrected and the sons reached mutual guarantee, for whom was the Torah, the method, actually given? For whom is it intended, Israel or the nations of the world?

Answer: The Torah was undoubtedly meant for the nations of the world. It says that the Creator turned to seventy nations and offered them the Torah, but none of these egoistic desires—ones that don’t have the spiritual spark, that aren’t able to correct themselves by keeping in contact with the Light, and that cannot respond to it correctly—were able to receive it. The “matter” of the desire to receive cannot understand the process of the ascent and the change brought about by the Light if it doesn’t have that spark.

So, how can the spark be inserted? For that, there is another system called “the people of Israel,” without which it is impossible to turn to the egoistic desire and start working with it. Even billions of years of evolution will not help if there is no spark of the Light inside the ego. The inanimate, vegetative, and animate levels of nature cannot rise; they are kinds of desire that cannot do it.

However, there is one kind of desire Israel that desires to be Yashar El (straight to the Creator). The entire world recognizes the fact that it is different and hates it without even knowing why.

The children of Israel, in their turn, discover that they are different, although they try to be like everyone else. There are even those who believe that it is another race, and there is a grain of truth in this assumption, although it is on a different level.

Our entire history proves that there is something special here, a special, natural phenomenon. Accordingly, the hatred that the nations of the world feel is also a natural phenomenon, and there is nothing we can do about it. Even those who have never been in contact with the Jews hate them. It comes from the inside. Even a person who has never heard about the cause of his repulsion simply feels that it is different.

This hate is rooted in religions, which only hasten the process by externally emphasizing the difference between the groups. It all stems from the difference between the general desire to receive and the part in which the Light dresses, which has to be the link for others. This is its only role.

Therefore, as it is written, “The Lord thy God has chosen thee.” Do whatever you want, He chose you, and that’s it. No matter how you regard your mission, you will fulfill it anyway because it is His Choice.

There is nothing special about you, but it is simply that, after the division into the “people of Israel” and the “nations of the world,” everyone has his role, his job, his free will. All this is predetermined from Above, and no one is better than another.

So, the children of Israel must teach the method of correction to others. Actually, how else can you bring contentment to the Creator if He initially turned to the nations of the world? The Creator wants to correct the basic desire to receive, but He has to build a system through which the entire process will go. Thus, Israel is the system, so do what you have to do.

Of course, this big desire to receive has to be revealed in the vessels of the nations of the world, but there should be no difference between us and them since it is one, whole vessel. Eventually, everything is revealed in the collective vessel as all its parts connect. As it is written, “He is One and His name is One.” In the general vessel, everything becomes “round,” inseparable.

Escaping The Foolish King

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: If I already feel the importance of the Creator, what should I do in order to connect with Him?

Answer: There is a constant struggle in us over who will control: the Creator or Pharaoh, our ego. But if a person already feels the importance of the Creator, there are no doubts. He will do whatever he can in order to constantly reinforce this feeling of importance. Then his desire will focus on the Creator’s work by being free of worrying about himself.

If I think that bestowal is important, I immediately think of different ways to work in order to bestow and have no questions about what I should do. The feeling of importance opens up all the roads and all the means for me.

Before that, the desire to receive held me chained, and I worked only for it. If I discover the importance of the Creator instead of the importance of my ego, I can already work for Him.

Everything is determined by a person’s desire, which is the matter of creation. This desire can work only for what it sees as important. So all our work is to clarify what the most important thing for us is: either an old foolish king under whose domination we were born, or a poor clever child, which means the desire to bestow and the feeling of the Creator’s greatness, which we can develop inside us.

Adjusting Focus

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe attitude towards the friend, the group or towards all of humanity, which we currently perceive as existing outside ourselves, is actually the same thing. Such a perception of reality isn’t acquired immediately; we must constantly connect “Israel (one who yearns for Yashar –El, straight to the Creator), the Torah, and the Creator” to one whole.

A person should constantly work in order to form the real picture inside him. It is gradually stabilized, in all its parts, in all the connections between the different parts, until it is revealed to a person.

It is like seeing a blurred picture on a screen when you cannot distinguish anything and thus you feel confused. In the same way, we see the world through our internal photographic machine, which is totally out of focus. But gradually this picture is focused and becomes clearer according to how close I can bring my internal attributes to the attributes of the Light.

Different Goals, Same Direction

Dr. Michael LaitmanBaal HaSulam, “The Essence of the Wisdom of Kabbalah”: This wisdom is no more and no less than a sequence of roots, which hang down by way of cause and consequence, by fixed, determined rules, interweaving to a single, exalted goal described as “the revelation of His Godliness to His creatures in this world.

All the other things that we would like to attain by using the wisdom of Kabbalah have nothing to do with it. It is like using a physics book with the hope that we may learn medicine from it or going to chemistry lessons in order to learn political science. Here, too, it is the same thing: The wisdom of Kabbalah is only meant to help us reach the revelation of the Creator, period. If you want that, this wisdom will serve as a means for you; if you have no such need, do what ever you like.

Before the desire to reveal the Creator was evoked in people in the course of our evolution, the wisdom of Kabbalah wasn’t revealed so as not to confuse people. Today, when this desire is expressed generally and demands an answer, Kabbalists say that it is time for the wisdom of Kabbalah to be revealed to the world as a means, as a solution.

If you are looking for miracles, or for recipes of how to succeed in life, or how to make the world a better place, or for some secrets, holy water, red strings, or different promises, the wisdom of Kabbalah will be of no help to you in any way. It is a waste of time and you’d be better off going to a fortuneteller or a psychologist. The real wisdom of Kabbalah, and not the mysticism that is sold under this label, is only the revelation of the Creator to the created being and nothing more than that.

Baal HaSulam puts it very simply: If you have the right desire for it, go ahead. Then you have to ask Kabbalists: “How should I use the wisdom of Kabbalah in order to reveal the Creator?” They will tell you that there is the condition of “Love thy friend as thyself.” You should organize a group and in it fulfill this condition by studying and the mutual work against our ego in order to rise above it and to reach the goal.

But first I must clarify whether the goal of my life is adapted to the goal of the wisdom of Kabbalah. This should be clearly explained to people, leaving no room for confusion. Of course, everyone checks himself openly for everyone’s sake, but if the desire a person has isn’t ripe yet, if he isn’t ready for the revelation of the Creator yet, he mustn’t be drawn inside forcefully.

Our approach should be tough and clear cut: We treat everyone with respect and consider those who have a desire aimed at the Creator as members, friends. If you don’t have such a desire, Kabbalah isn’t for you—enjoy this world.

Today it is a new era: On the background of the global crisis and helplessness, the whole world is becoming aware of the fact that we have to discover the upper world, the Creator, because otherwise we will not survive and will not be able to exist. This is already a different situation in which we gradually have to tell everyone about the method to some extent. So, we begin to teach people about the principles of mutual guarantee, showing them that it is possible to transcend the troubles of the current crisis and to rise to a life of prosperity through unity and the love of others.

We don’t mention the revelation of the Creator to the general public, but rather present the good life in the world as the goal. By that we are already following the same path: On our part, it is the principle of the unity of Israel, the Torah, and the Creator, and for all the others accompany us, they want to fix their corporeal life. Eventually, thanks to the mutual support, we will all connect with the upper force and reveal it, so today we are taking a course with all of humanity.

The problem is that the masses only see the survival from the crisis and the material prosperity, while we see before us the revelation of the Creator. The goal is different, but the direction is the same.

So the wisdom of Kabbalah is revealed to one percent of humanity, and the method of mutual guarantee is meant for the other 99 %. Mutual guarantee is the same wisdom of Kabbalah but without the details and the forces that operate on us. As Kabbalists tell us, people who are not ripe for that should receive what is right for them.

One Light, Many Types Of Attire

Dr. Michael LaitmanOne percent of humanity that wants to discover the Creator is obliged to form the connection between Him and all the rest. This is why we were given this desire. In fact, the goal of creation is concealed in the 99% of humanity, while the one percent is evoked in order to act according to the Creator’s direct will. Thus, our only role is to serve the 99%.

Question: Their goal is to have a good life in the corporeal world by using the method of mutual guarantee and connection, while our goal is the Creator. How do these two things go along? How will these two goals, the corporeal and the spiritual, finally connect?

Answer: For you it’s a spiritual goal because you have to draw the Light and discover the Creator so that you’ll have something to pass on to others. Moreover, you’re already passing on the Light in the attire that’s right for them.

We receive the upper Light in the attire of our Returning Light, while the masses receive from us the powers, the guidance, and the solutions in the form of the method of mutual guarantee and connection. Although their goal is corporeal, the Light that operates internally passes on to them through us and then they feel the changes in their mind and feelings.

Under the influence of the Light, we feel that something has changed internally while they don’t feel it as much although they are also changing with time. Now people are also looking for advancement that stems from some inner force. It will change them, and then they will suddenly begin to see the world differently and to judge what’s happening and themselves differently: This is the result of the influence of the Light that Reforms.

It’s the Light and not us that does it internally while we only have to create the connection between the Creator and everyone else. This infusion should go through all of creation following the string of Ein Sof (Infinity) that passes from Ein Sof to the smallest, lowest level. Eventually, if the knowledge of unity comes from us, it will necessarily come to life, and things will begin to improve.
