Demanding Bread And Education

Dr. Michael LaitmanOur main objective right now isn’t to erase the differences between the richest and the poorest layers of the population. This is the goal for the future.

Right now, we face two urgent issues: The first is to raise everyone’s standard of living above the poverty line, and the second is to oblige everyone to learn about mutual guarantee, the new world, the new economy, the new relationships between people, and the changes that nature is obliging us to make. A university that will teach these things must be built, and studying there must be obligatory, just as it’s obligatory for children to obtain a secondary school education.

I consider these two conditions to be essential. After all, it is written: “If there is no flour, there is no Torah.” But on the other hand, if there is no Torah (the knowledge of the new world), there is no flour. For this reason, people must be educated and given flour, meaning the necessary income. For now, this is all that needs to be done.

I’m often asked what practical advice can be given to a person that has suffered enough and is ready to accept mutual guarantee. How can such a person enter into a new world? This is only possible by gradually educating a person. We can’t just wake up tomorrow and, by some miracle, be in a new world. Everything begins with a person’s inner correction. He has to learn to change by means of studying and through his environment. If many people study, they will come to this state by correcting themselves and influencing one another.

It’s the government’s duty, first and foremost, to provide the nation with the flour and with education. The nation has to demand that the government elevates everyone above the poverty level and educates everyone in the spirit of mutual guarantee. Without these two things, we won’t be able to go forward.

I don’t know where the government will find the necessary funding. The government could take it from the rich or begin saving for it by cutting back on their government officials, it’s up to them. Let’s calculate how much money is needed. It may not be such a large sum. One way or another, the government must provide the nation with the necessities. It won’t be able to play with people as has been done in the past, so it would be better to begin planning ahead of time.

I don’t think it should be an unrealistic amount of money. They should calculate it and figure out whose taxes should be raised and whose should be lowered. There may be a need for a new tax for everyone, except for those below the poverty line. This must be done. How could it be that there are people that don’t have enough for food?

It’s also necessary to teach people, through television programs or workshops, how to manage a household. No matter what their income, people can’t live thoughtlessly and do whatever they want. People have to learn to manage their means. Quite often, people don’t know how to do this.

There are specialists, scientists, economists, and psychologists who can explain how to properly manage money. If one has a certain amount of money for a family to live on for a month, these specialists can calculate how much could be spent and on what. There is an entire academic discipline called family and consumer sciences.

People will listen and become inspired gradually; they will suddenly gain a different attitude toward life. After all, people don’t think too much about what will happen to them tomorrow. We don’t feel it, and we aren’t taught this. Our schools are so removed from real life that they don’t teach the necessary things such as how to treat people, your future husband, wife, and children or how to manage a household so that there would be enough money for the month. All these things must be learned.

From Captivity To Freedom

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: Does the upcoming return of the imprisoned Israeli soldier Gilat Shalit signify a new level of unity in our nation?

Answer: Certainly we have to be joyful that this finally happened. Our nation cannot tolerate such a situation when one of its people is tormented in captivity. We can see that it is not easy. On the other hand, this is not the end of our problems.

Let’s be glad about the happy end for Gilad. It is not a matter of how many terrorists are freed in exchange. He is coming back and this is good.

I don’t think that this will make a big difference in the unity of the nation. The saga has ended and we will forget about it in a month. We only have to understand that we have to care about each and everyone at least as much. After all, we are imprisoned by our egoistic desire, and it is time to come out of this captivity.

The Solution Is Not Where The Protesters Are Looking

Dr. Michael LaitmanBaal HaSulam, “Peace in the World:” But it is only natural that under such conditions the weak and the exploited proliferate, until there are enough of them to protest against the successful and start quarrels and fights. And from here emerged the attribute of “peace” in the world. Thus, all those attributes – mercy, charity, and peace – emerged and were born from the weakness of truth.

This is exactly what we are observing today. Revolutionaries cause unrest, striving for total changes. Why? Because there is no truth in the world. They say: “We will establish truth on our own.”

However, their subconsciousness contains other categories which they would like to “deal with.” Previously it really allowed change within society and achieved certain compromises, which was followed by a period of peace. But today it is no longer possible, and this is why demonstrations and unrest will not prove to be beneficial. They may lead to bloodshed and revolutions, like in Egypt and other countries, but the goal will not be attained.

We must stand in a circle and unite, and we really must attain the truth instead of using palliatives for it. The Israeli State Commission is trying to “rob their belly to cover their back,” rehashing the budget to find additional possibilities, but all these things are preliminary measures that only slightly cool down the passions. Before, similar measures could actually bring the desired result because Nature was not yet demanding unity from us. Now these undertakings will not even give us a short term effect, we will not even be able to realize them. They will only cause pain and anger in us, and lead to even heavier conflicts.

Today correction can only be realized by directing ourselves towards the category of truth. And this path lies through unity, the mutual guarantee.

The government will not find the solution in their dated arsenal. Essentially, the government should be taking care of the external safety of their country and a normal life within it. Of course, it also doesn’t forget about itself. But considering the problematic conditions that the government and the people have now encountered, we must be explaining that no half measures can help from this point forward. There is no point in expecting some kind of effect from them because that will only prolong the problem, fail to correct the situation, and in the end the reaction of the masses will be even stronger.

This is why we need to use any opportunity to explain these things. Even if people do not understand us today, another failure will make them understand that old methods no longer work and then they might remember what we have been saying. It is not easy to raise children, so there is not much to say in this regard. Humanity will also need to learn a little through blows since it is traveling down a “beaten track,” which lies between the good path and the path of catastrophes.

Global Problems Call For A Global Solution

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: Authorities in Israel are trying to find an answer to the demands advanced by the social protest. What are your suggestions?

Answer: With all due respect to the chairman of the government appointed committee, Mr. Trachtenberg, I suggest creating an organization that will know, above all, where we are headed. Our final objective is unity of the people and of the whole country.

Once we choose this direction, let’s see about where to begin. Obviously, first we have to lift the destitute above the poverty line. And then we have to work on rehabilitation: create a program for every sphere of activity that will enable us to gradually put production, trade, healthcare, the systems of government and banking, and others onto a new track. Step by step, we have to reorganize them into a single, integral complex.

For that we have to teach and educate people by involving the environment so they will understand what we have come up against, what kind of crisis we are facing, and how we can alleviate the situation. We have to give them an explanation of the solution, the remedy to the illness that we have diagnosed, how to take this remedy, in what doses, and for what period of time. And they have to want to use this remedy.

This requires a propaganda system that opens people’s eyes to what is happening. I want to wake up tomorrow morning and feel that I am together with the whole nation in a common understanding of the world we are living in. I come out to the street, ride on a bus, talk to my coworkers, listen to the radio, watch the TV, and everywhere people are talking about the important things, everyone is informed and not blind, unlike those who are ignorant and only know how to shout about yet another wreckage.

Today economists are scaring people with starvation, while doctors, instead of curing us, are forcing us to fearfully count how many lives their strike might cost. Enough already! Let’s get to the bottom of the situation. Let’s understand why the medical employees are dissatisfied, why the financiers are panicking, and why people cannot make ends meet until the next paycheck. Let’s look at the general picture rather than its separate fragments, no matter how alarming they might appear.

In order to solve the problem, we have to rise above it. But in the meantime, people are coming out to the street without even really knowing why. Often they don’t have clear demands or a clear program, but only pain, or just a personal reason for being dissatisfied. So let’s take an impartial, bird’s-eye view of the global events. This is not just a regular, short-term phenomenon, problems of a separate country or separate social classes, but a common human problem. All of human civilization is now entering a new state, so why don’t we figure it out, showing a mature and intelligent attitude?

Yet instead we are shouting, “The stock market is falling! Europe is on the verge of collapse!” That is how “impressionable” we are being instead of having a normal, constructive approach. Clearly, people are incapable of that kind of approach, but in addition they cannot even admit their own impotency. By trying to fight the symptoms of the illness, they are merely moving around furniture inside the cabins of a sinking ship.

Therefore, we should be wary of poorly thought-out decisions.

A Detailed Portrait Of The New Economy

Dr. Michael LaitmanWe have to create a giant propaganda system, and first of all—in Israel. We have to disseminate our materials with all we’ve got and lay a sound foundation for the notion of mutual guarantee in the Internet and mass media. We have to come out into the world with this notion, and in Israel we have to turn it into a “superpower” of our small, Hebrew-speaking, virtual world.

Soon many European countries will be enveloped by serious disorders. The processes are developing very fast and this requires us to act. However, besides explaining the causes and the objectives, we have to talk about the economy of the transitional period. The world’s system has become global, yet specialists still describe it using terminology of the egoistic, consumerist economy. Therefore, we have to introduce a new format by describing the current situation in a new light.

After that we will apply this new worldview for describing the final state: a balanced economy of basic necessity where people receive their excesses on the “human” degree of development. On the “animate” level we provide all the necessities: housing, food, healthcare, and so on. A person lives with all his needs provided for, not worrying about anything. This is the base level. And in the meantime, his “human” desires go on to spiritual fulfillment.

That is how we designate the target state and extend a “bridge” to it—form the transitional process. This transition is not easy and we won’t make it happen on our own. However, there are already specialists who understand that there is no other solution. Gradually they will agree to join us, to understand the meaning of our explanations, while we will in turn understand their statements. That is how we will work together, depicting one phase after another.

First we will formulate the general objective and then we will narrow it down to the details, proceeding to the step-by-step realization. We will create schemes and explain the particular aspects, and as a result, we will clearly deduce what we have to do today as a first step.

That is how we will change the interconnection permeating the world, the entire order of threads connecting people. The economy is a system of connections between us. The Torah states, “Go and earn from one another.” In other words: By uniting with one another, you will attain fulfillment. This is already the science of Kabbalah in action. After all, it talks about how to correct the world, meaning how to correct the connections between us from the material, egoistic, consumerist connection, funneled through the “American dream” to the true connection that leads to a different kind of dream. This is what our work comes down to.

However, we can’t just dash forward right away. The only thing we have to do right away is help those who are starving to death. This is necessary, while everything else has to be done in a thought-out manner. This is where the problem lies: People still don’t understand that it is enough to just start moving in the right direction even if you haven’t actually made anything happen in practice—and the Lights immediately express favor toward you.

In this case you are no longer hostile to nature. You do not oppose the integral system with your discrete, individualistic nature. On the contrary, you focus on the changes within you; your desires and intentions are already aimed at these changes, and that’s enough. The Light begins working on you and you already start to understand, to have a greater desire to change, and to correspond to the necessary changes even more.

Imagine what will happen when a huge mass of people agrees with the fact that there is no other solution and we have to make these changes happen. Then we will gain an enormous force and will realize our plans.

The World Is One Step Away From A Full-Blown Crisis

Dr. Michael LaitmanOpinion: (Christine Lagarde, the IMF Chief): “International Monetary Fund Managing Director Christine Lagarde said governments and policy makers in developed economies must take action to support the recovery as the risk of recession outweighs the threat from inflation.

“’Countries must act now and act boldly to steer their economies through this dangerous new phase of the recovery,’ Lagarde said…

“While ‘policy makers do still have options to support the recovery,’ the scope for action ‘is considerably narrower than when the crisis first erupted,’ Lagarde said. ‘Policy makers should stand ready, as needed, to take more action to support the recovery — including through unconventional measures.’”

Opinion (Robert Zoellick, the World Bank Chief): “The president of the World Bank has warned that the world is ‘one shock away from a full-blown crisis.’

“G20 finance chiefs, who also met in Washington, pledged financial support to help new governments in the Middle East and North Africa.

“Mr Zoellick said such support was vital.

“‘The crisis in the Middle East and North Africa underscores how we need to put the conclusions from our latest world development report into practice. The report highlighted the importance of citizen security, justice and jobs,’ he said.”

My Comment: In general, it all comes down to the Middle East: Israel has the method of coming out of the crisis. Everyone is welcome to visit the Mutual Guarantee site: Eng I Heb I Rus.

After The Protests: The Advertising World Is Back To Basics

Dr. Michael LaitmanIn the News (from ynet.co.il): “An examination of the advertising pie for September 2011 shows that it is very different from the one of September 2010 in its scope, internal mix, and contents.

“Luxuries—out, basic necessities—in. Consumption for the sake of consumption—out, carefully planned shopping—in. Mega-market—out, grocery store—in. Power, size, transportation—all out. Large-scale measurements were replaced by modest ratios. It is too soon to say whether it is profound change or just a trend.

“A long term anti-consumerist behavior can lead to a real recession.”

My Comment: We shouldn’t worry about the slowdown of production and trade, and we shouldn’t calm ourselves by saying that the slowdown won’t happen. Everything will gradually decrease until it comes to the level of the basic necessities and not more than that. Otherwise we won’t be able to reach balance with the surrounding nature, and this imbalance will be felt as crises, suffering, and wars.

We will receive everything beyond the bare necessities from the new realm of our relationships, from mutual guarantee, which will open up the upper world for us—a sensation of being filled with eternity and perfection.

With What Right Do You Threaten The Rich?

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: In Israel, a new phenomenon is arising: threats directed at the rich. People accuse them of becoming rich at the expense of the nation and demand that they return the money….

Answer: Suppose I was born in China to a royal family, and you are the son of my gardener. Are we guilty of that? No. But in the meantime I am being prepared for life in high society, and you, to mow the lawn. Can we, in some way, compare ourselves? We don’t know all the hidden reasons as to why we have such destinies. Could it be that in the previous incarnation the situation was the opposite? In order to come to conclusions, one needs to see the entire picture, which will remain hidden from our eyes until the very end of correction.

Some people are successful in life, and others receive inheritances from their parents. Some make a career on the Internet in their youth, whereas you and I don’t have enough intelligence or maybe luck to do that. This means that we simply don’t know, don’t see, where it all begins and ends.

People don’t merely become rich. Some received money through an inheritance, and for others the conditions were “arranged” from Above, according to their efforts, abilities, and the general plan.

Hence, if a person is rich within a legislative framework and according to the accepted norms of society, you can not ask him for his money. He paid his taxes. He is clean before the society. It is true that after taxes he keeps 5 million dollars and you only keep 500. But with what right do you intend to confiscate his property, which is like threatening a stranger with a knife in a dark alley?

And you also want to call it “justice?” On what basis?

If you show contempt for the rich and curse them, it is because you are jealous of them. How would you describe justice to yourself if you were in his place? It is similar to the Bolsheviks in Russia who forcefully confiscated the capitalists’ money.

You must understand that “initiatives” of this kind stem from the desire to destroy the country. They will never build, they can only destroy. A person who calls this “justice” is actually working cunningly for the detriment of all, and above all, for the detriment of the poor. In this way we won’t achieve anything.

A Tycoon As A Punching-Bag

Dr. Michael LaitmanI don’t understand people who go out to the streets and demand to be given something. Why do they deserve it? If it were my child, it would be different. But I didn’t give birth to you, so why should I take care of you?

Even if I were a tycoon, so what? I made my money, so why do you come to me? What is unjust here? What is illegal here? Why do you demand something from me? Why do I have to feel ashamed of what I have earned, of my social status?

Let’s take an athlete for example, who worked out in the gym for twenty years and has lifted tons of weights. Now he has muscles like Arnold Schwarzenegger, and he is proud of it. Suddenly some demonstrators come to him and demand to “take off” some of his muscles. How would he see that?

So if a tycoon has worked hard and has earned his wealth, he also has his own “muscles,” but they are expressed in his bank account. What right do you have to put your hand on it?

Another example: A musician has practiced for years, fifteen hours a day. Does he have to give up what he has achieved for you?

So why do we look at a rich man differently? Hasn’t he worked as hard as the athlete or the musician? And even if he has it as a result of his father’s efforts, so what? If you think that there is social injustice here—go and change society, do something. But it is wrong to just come and demand. And besides, if you destroy the tycoons, you will destroy society. Who will provide people with jobs? Who will enable them to make a living?

As long as the world is egotistic, we cannot change it for the better. We have seen it in Russia. Instead of correcting things, we will only create a bigger lie and new ways of stealing. In an egotistic society, every organization and every individual operate according to their own interests, and there is nothing we can do. We cannot build a more just society than the present one on the basis of the same desires, the same egoistic “fuel.”

There is no other choice but to change the engine.

Are These Excuses Or Solutions?

Dr. Michael LaitmanIn the News (from calcalist.co.il): “From the Trachtenberg Committee’s Report: …Summer 2011 echoed with slogans and lit a spark of hope for Israeli society: The voice was raised about the diseases that have accumulated and piled up in recent years, as well as the hope to bring about a profound change that will allow a more just society to flourish, the society founded on solidarity and fairness towards a person who works hard to earn his living and contributes his part for the benefit of everyone, the society built on values, common to all sectors.

“Social justice is the coordination between normative behavior, contribution, and effort of the individual and the reward he receives. Social justice means equal opportunities during development stages, then, fair competition, and later, basic security and respect after retirement.

“Social justice means that when misfortune strikes a person, a society will help provide him with the basic necessities and affordable and honest existence. The realization of social justice and the common denominator—values—by way of thought-through statements is the most important thing in the approach that should guide the implementation of the desired changes in the Israeli society.

“The source of some illnesses of society is in global phenomena and partly in globalization, which powerfully and rapidly intensifies relative advantages in ways unfamiliar to us.”

My Comment: No material injections will solve our problems, not to speak of the feeling of social inequality. In a small country, these feelings are exacerbated like in a close family. The main problem is a lack of sense of family and unity in the common effort to survive. The country is torn apart by accumulating contradictions, and internal divisions are constrained only by external hatred.

The injection of necessary funds will not ease social tensions because the program of our development is to come to a society of mutual connection and guarantee, concession and love. This requires education and returning to our roots. Only the implementation of the Creator’s plan—to create a cohesive society based on Arvut, guarantee—will lead us to peace among ourselves and with the world, even with our neighbors. The root of the problem is in us.
