How Spiritual Life Is Born

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: What kind of calculation is it to receive for the sake of bestowal?

Answer: It is not easy. At first, you need to attach yourself to the upper one and restrict yourself. Reception for the sake of bestowal is a big state.

When I connect with another person, the first thing I need to do is to cancel my desires so as to prevent them from getting in the way of uniting with him. I turn into pure bestowal, Bina (Hafetz Hesed, delighting in mercy), which means that I am ready to feel all of his desires, and I possess a protective force that enables me to avoid using them for the fulfillment of my own desires since I have already restricted the latter. It is as if you have allowed me to enter you and remain there. This is how I penetrate the desires of another person.

I receive this permission under the condition of being able to restrict myself. Now, I begin to feel you completely, all of your thoughts and desires, as if I were you. I accept them as they are, and I make a calculation of my ability to fulfill your desires, taking into consideration my strength and abilities.

However, this calculation is incorrect because I make my calculation in relation to my abilities, but I should now be making a calculation in relation to your desires. I take your thoughts and desires, understand what you want, and carry out the actions you wanted to carry out in your desires in my own. I work with my desires in order to fulfill yours.

This action whereby we create our common desires is called the “head (Rosh) of the Partzuf.” The head of the Partzuf is a state where I exist within you, within your desires, with my entire heart and mind, and I make a calculation there. Where is the screen? The screen is always standing between you and me, as if it were on guard.

“The inner body of the Partzuf” (Toch) is the part where we unite with our common desires and thoughts, and the “end of the Partzuf” (Sof) is where we are unable to unite, and I restrict my desires. Your restricted desires are there together with my restricted desires. I have restricted your desires because I was unable to satisfy them.

In other words, a spiritual Partzuf is the degree of adhesion of the two with one another, together with all the calculations of what is and is not possible. For this reason, when there is no adhesion of one with another, there is no spiritual existence, no Partzuf.

Your Efforts Do Not Vanish Into Thin Air

Dr. Michael LaitmanIt is written, “There is none else besides Him,” meaning, the upper Light is always at absolute rest and always influences us with goodness. But on the other hand, it is written, “The monster will swallow it and spew it out,” and indeed, we see that no matter how many efforts we make, everything disappears. Months go by as we work, exerting in the intention to the best of our ability, but it all ends up useless.

Yet it’s impossible for any action to exist in nature without bringing any result, whether good or bad. Of course, the result is always there and it does not disappear anywhere. The results just seem to disappear to us because the actions and thoughts of the past become forgotten, and at every moment I am like a new person.

But where is all of this saved? In our desire, at its very depth! If we make any action with our desire, intention, or effort, with all of the reality that is depicted to us by this desire, regardless of it being correct or not, then it no longer disappears.
Everything that any person or any element of creation does, any part of it – whether still, vegetative, animate, or human, according to its level – everything is swallowed inside of Malchut, the desire that exists in creation.

But if a person has the aspiration to attain bestowal, then his actions become special. Even if he acts for his own sake for now (Lo Lishma), he forgets that he has to give pleasure to the Creator and does not know when he will ever achieve this.

All of a person’s actions (in the group, in his attitude to the study) are completely egoistic for now, and they are swallowed by the “impure force” (Klipa), meaning his egoistic desires in which he acted at that moment. His desires and thoughts were aimed at his own benefit, and the action turned out egoistic. Yet everything is preserved and nothing disappears. After all, a person nevertheless makes efforts in the state he was given, and he has to gradually grow.

And when he reaches a stage where the sum of the efforts he made, his attempts and the group that he organized for himself, produce a result, then all of his accumulations, which are preserved in the impure desires without his awareness, suddenly appear and come out in the form of corrected desires. Then he receives them and continues moving onward with them.

This happens all the time, and it is a very important principle. We have to understand that every action is beneficial, even if it’s egoistic. And all of our actions, which we make over many months, eventually gather together in order to suddenly become revealed.

And when at times a person manages to attain a slightly greater aspiration to bestowal, even one that is still “Lo Lishma,” but is already closer to “Lishma,” then he starts to gain a better understanding and sensation of the past. He realizes what he has gone through and what has happened to him.

Who Fell: You Or Me?

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: How can I justify a friend who fell and lost his correct intention?

Answer: So, the question sounds like this: How can I justify myself for thinking that my friend has seemingly lost the intention? One has to relate to it in two ways: Externally, I should help him with practical actions. Internally, I should justify him and think that if I were him, I would have fallen much deeper.

And even deeper within myself, I say that I see him fallen only because the Creator made me see it this way. And all this is done so that I rise above this thought and consider that he is totally corrected, and I am not corrected if I see him so fallen. As it is said: “Every person judges according to his own flaws.”

The key is to understand that it is like we are in a crystalline lattice; we are in the force field of the Creator Who manages all our states. And therefore, you need to consider a friend as the Creator’s representative who shows you some of His attitudes towards you. You have to view the entire group and even the world and yourself in this way.

You are given a site where you should always put things in order and bring it to the final corrected state. You must correct your sight to see the world at the end of correction (Gmar Tikkun). Through this, you will reach the end of your correction.

Indeed, nothing changes in spirituality; even now you are in an absolutely perfect state. Why do you see its exact opposite, this broken world and everybody uncorrected?

Yet, if you disseminate the method of correction in the world and desire to attain the corrected state together with everyone else as much as possible, you will be correcting yourself and transferring these parts which seem external to you into internal ones.

When you will pray, you will judge yourself and want to change. As a result, you will come to a state where everything will be connected, and the upper Light will be revealed in these connected parts. Then, externality and internality will become equal.

Focus On The Mutual Guarantee

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: Why don’t we realize the mutual guarantee between us and then influence the whole world? What do we want from others?

Answer: It is correct; we have to experience this first. For example, it is written in the article “Love for the Creator and Love for the Created Beings“: To the extent in which the sons of Israel unite by keeping the Torah, to that extent they pass their power to the rest of the nations.

Therefore, we have devoted many years, our entire life to organize groups and supporters around the world. We must continue what we have started. On one hand, this brings us to the mutual guarantee, but on the other, dissemination should not be only internal but also external. One does not cancel the other.

And of course, our main focus is the inner work.

An Endless Attack

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: We aren’t doing enough in our individual, inner work. How can we come out of this state?

Answer: With an attack. You cannot do anything else here. All the primary sources are in front of you.

Question: But why aren’t we able to turn all of our attacks into one common attack, one desire?

Answer: One attack won’t help. It will work only if it becomes unceasing, if our blows will be constantly pelting into one point without a break.

Do Not Hurt A Friend

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: When a person is approaching the property of bestowal, how is it reflected in his work in the group?

Answer: He tries all the time to maintain a sense of mutual guarantee so that his friends feel no lack of anything, so that they strengthen the mutual intention to bestow, do not forget about this, and do not abandon efforts for a moment. Then, they will also affect him, and the feeling of the importance of the goal and the warmth of the hearts will reign between them.

That is what concerns a person. The thoughts about the friends are more effective than the thoughts about oneself. Caring about personal advancement will bring only little correction, induced by fear and other external calculations. On the other hand, if one invests efforts in others, he or she certainly holds the true course.

Thoughts, intentions, and calculations not aimed at the connection with the group, at the unity with friends, are directed past spirituality. They do not attract the Light that Reforms. The important thing is only what you intend to do in the group. If you care about cohesion of friends, about their future, this is the spiritual work which will bear fruit, and everything else except this will not.

Hillel gave a short definition: “What is hateful to you, do not do to another.” In other words, you have nothing else to think of in your life but how not to hurt a friend. This is enough for your egoism for the time being. Try to correct yourself so that in every moment, in each revealed desire, you think only about how not to hurt a friend.

Do this, and you will succeed: When you will desire to act without hurting a friend, a good attitude towards him will be suddenly revealed to you.

The Healer’s Sharp Knife

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: When big problems and heavy states come to me, should I be grateful for them as well?

Answer: If you want to be above fulfillment, with the screen and the Reflected Light, you don’t care about the present sensation in your desire, whether it’s good or bad. You realize that all the states that you go through, whatever they may be, no matter how bad, are all necessary in order to develop your desire.

This may be difficult to accomplish if some misfortune or serious illness befalls you. But if you achieve the right correction, you will never feel any state as bad or harmful as long as in this state you merge with the Creator.

In your sensation you may feel terrible, but instead of identifying yourself with your sensation, you will identify yourself with the goal. In other words, you will understand why the Creator who up until now has been giving you good sensations and even more (five dollars instead of the usual one!) suddenly gave you zero and even less than zero….

Evidently, it was done so that in spite of everything, you could achieve correction in these desires, which is the feeling of gratitude. This is not simple, but that’s the way it works. That is how desires are revealed.

It’s hard for us to understand and justify this since we depend on our egoistic, corporeal, sensation, but it is what it is. It is written: “Even with a sharp knife pressed against your throat, do not lose hope in His mercy.”

Questions About A Spouse, The Barrier, And Evil

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: I have a question regarding my husband. We are both very serious about our work, and my husband occasionally reaches a point of complete frustration, great sorrow, worry, and even “anger” about the world’s condition, about everything he feels within and without, as if he feels the weight of all the worlds on his shoulders and he needs to find a solution to all the “chaos.”

Is there anything that I can do as a wife to ease the work, to help him feel balanced or more at peace, and to possibly attain the understanding of his responsibility?

Answer: A wife can calm and stabilize her husband better than anyone else. He has to more deeply examine the perception of the world and the governance of the single force. We perceive the world only within ourselves, in our qualities. In other words, to the extent of our corruption, we perceive the world instead of the Creator. If you correct yourself, you will feel the world of Infinity in the Creator’s appearance before you.

Question: If someone crosses the barrier, is there a point where he must move to be physically close to a group, and if he is not, will he do harm to himself?

Answer: The barrier is the boundary between you and your friends.

Question: I know that facing the evil inclination inside of me is part of the way of the truth, on the way of correction. I also know that by facing the evil inclination, the Creator wants to show me that I am opposite to Him and that I am still far away from the quality of bestowal.

But isn’t it enough to see that I am evil? Why does the evil grow to such a monster that it seems to control everything? I feel like I am evil as never before in my life, and I am hurting a lot of people around me.

Answer: These are your desires that are being revealed to you to the extent that you have strength to manage and correct them.

Recognizing Darkness In The Black Point

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe giving of the Torah, the method of correction, is impossible without the mutual guarantee, which represents a model, the implementation of this method. You reveal the Torah, work with it, and realize this teaching only in the mutual guarantee.

Today, reading Baal HaSulam’s article “The Mutual Guarantee,” we try to find more and more ways to realize the goal of creation. We are in the egoistic desire and must convert it into the form of bestowal. Instead of remaining in egoism which assumes the form of the augmented desire to receive, we have to realize the evil of this form.

The realization of evil can come through troubles or through the mind. A combined variation is also possible. This depends on how much we can engage our mind to increase the awareness of evil without waiting for troubles. Trouble simply extends time and brings us to wars and casualties by the path of suffering, through really tragic conditions.

One way or the other, we must realize evil in full, meaning to become aware that we are in egoism, the receiving desire, and that everyone only seeks his own advantage to the detriment of fellow men. If we do not realize this now, imagine how much more we will have to work on the realization of evil alone.

How many additional blows do I have to experience to see and realize that all my desires are egoistic? They are egoistic to such an extent that I consider no one, including my relatives, close ones, and children.

This is an awful state. It is written in the Scriptures: “The hands of compassionate women have boiled their own children.” That is what the recognition of evil comes to. We do not know what it is.

In order not to go to extremes, to save time, and be saved from great suffering, we can use the science of Kabbalah, the Light that Reforms, and the work in the group. That is why this tool was given to us. And then, in a combination of suffering and the Light that Reforms, we will realize evil sooner.

We need nothing except this awareness. Baal HaSulam writes about this in his article “The Essence of Kabbalah and Its Purpose.” Why did we receive it? We received it to accelerate our realization of evil. If I use its power correctly at every given opportunity, I will be able to conduct this analysis and draw conclusions, even if I have to go through some sufferings to advance to the state of analysis.

Baal HaSulam writes that we live at the time of the Messiah and therefore, considering opportunities available to us, we need to go ahead, start acting. Everything depends on us, on the degree in which we draw the Light that Reforms.

However, first it has to bring us the recognition of evil. And getting acquainted with our own ego is unpleasant. We need the support of the environment and studying; we have to become stronger internally to bear this ego being revealed to us. The key is that it is being revealed, and through this, I will without doubt move towards the goal. If I reject the revelation of ego because it is unpleasant to me, it will come to me through “the back door” and bring me really tragic conditions.

Humanity can advance along a beautiful path, experiencing very little evil. From a drop of poison, from a tiny bit of evil, I will build a huge structure of analysis. I see how this evil prevents me from connecting with friends in the group. If I fully use a small portion of evil, I need nothing else. One black point is enough, and I already understand what it means.

We achieve all this only by the force of mutual guarantee, when we want to build a system of mutual bestowal together, to unite as one man with one heart, and thus help each other. In this case, we recognize evil.

Now, imagine that the world recognizes a bit of evil today. Look at the developments: revolutions, demonstrations, and riots. Day by day, the situation is getting worse and drawing closer to Israel. No other country is under such external pressure. Yet, the internal pressure will soon be apparent as well.

Therefore, we must understand that the mutual guarantee, unity, and analysis leading to the realization of evil are a matter of life and death for us. We need nothing else but the recognition of evil because to the extent of your awareness of it, you want to rid yourself of it and no longer forget about the Light that Reforms. You are like a seriously ill person thinks about a remedy that can save him. The realization of evil prevents you from using it and pushes you to find the correct application.

If today countries and all kind of organizations recognized evil, they would turn the world into the Garden of Eden right away. Why would they create the silly things that they do today? The current world events make it clear that we are approaching critical states.

Quarreling For The Sake Of Making Up

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: What should I do if I am able to cancel myself in my thoughts, but it’s very difficult for me to do this in practice?

Answer: That’s impossible! If I really cancel myself in my thoughts, then I also do it in the actions. The action reflects the intention.

But if I still haven’t reached the final decision to cancel myself, then I am unable to carry out this action and am only lying to myself by thinking that I am cancelling myself in the thoughts.

If we see that after an argument a group does not come to unity, until the next quarrel, this is a sign that its members do not cancel each other before one another and don’t have any chance of attaining spirituality.

By conducting an inner self-analysis and trying to cancel our egoism before the friends, internally and externally, we already carry out the spiritual work. The spiritual world can become revealed to us practically only on the condition that we entirely cancel our egoism according to the level of our current degree.

If you now attain the true self-annulment in relation to any person, you will be convinced that you feel yourself in the spiritual reality, in the quality of bestowal, united with the Creator to a certain extent!
