“You’re Not As Great As You Think You Are”

Dr. Michael LaitmanIn the News (from Mother Nature Network): ““A growing body of psychology research shows that incompetence deprives people of the ability to recognize their own incompetence. To put it bluntly, dumb people are too dumb to know it. Similarly, unfunny people don’t have a good enough sense of humor to tell.

“With more than a decade’s worth of research, David Dunning, a psychologist at Cornell University, has demonstrated that humans find it ‘intrinsically difficult to get a sense of what we don’t know.’ Whether an individual lacks competence in logical reasoning, emotional intelligence, humor or even chess abilities, the person still tends to rate his or her skills in that area as being above average.

“Dunning and his colleague, Justin Kruger, formerly of Cornell and now at New York University, ‘have done a number of studies where we will give people a test of some area of knowledge like logical reasoning, knowledge about STDs and how to avoid them, emotional intelligence, etcetera. Then we determine their scores, and basically just ask them how well they think they’ve done,’ Dunning said. ‘We ask, “what percentile will your performance fall in?”’

“The results are uniform across all the knowledge domains: People who actually did well on the test tend to feel more confident about their performance than people who didn’t do well, but only slightly. Almost everyone thinks they did better than average. ‘For people at the bottom who are really doing badly — those in the bottom 10th or 15th percentile — they think their work falls in the 60th or 55th percentile, so, above average,’ Dunning told Life’s Little Mysteries. The same pattern emerges in tests of people’s ability to rate the funniness of jokes, the correctness of grammar, or even their own performance in a game of chess. ‘People at the bottom still think they’re outperforming other people.’ …

“If only we knew ourselves better. Dunning believes people’s inability to assess their own knowledge is the cause of many of society’s ills, including climate change denialism. ‘Many people don’t have training in science, and so they may very well misunderstand the science. But because they don’t have the knowledge to evaluate it, they don’t realize how off their evaluations might be,’ he said.

“Along the same lines, people who aren’t talented in a given area tend not to be able to recognize the talents or good ideas of others, from co-workers to politicians. This may impede the democratic process, which relies on citizens having the capacity to identify and support the best candidate or policy.

“The ultimate takeaway of the research is the reminder that you really may not be as great as you think you are.”

My Comment: Kabbalah explains in details how much our egoism blinds us and does not allow us to see the truth. It takes a lot of effort in the group, being against the friends to begin in one’s perception of them to “see” oneself. And by developing the objective perception above egoism, one can “see” the Creator.

Ice Cream For Everyone

Dr. Michael LaitmanWe must stop dealing directly with our desire, trying to fill it through the different systems we have created. It simply doesn’t work. It worked partially for a while, meaning intentionally in order to let us reach the shattering, and the full recognition of our evil. But now we’ve reached a state in which we can come to the conclusion that we can’t advance this way anymore. We have to rise above the old approach, above the attempts to fill ourselves and to manage our lives egoistically. We will never succeed this way and so we must rise to the level of bestowal.

If we don’t rise from the attribute of receiving to the attribute of bestowal, we won’t be able to reach fulfillment. We must understand that we cannot continue with the old way. The new approach is: only the connection of everyone, not of some on the account of others. We can fulfill ourselves only if we unite.

It’s as if nature is confronting us with a condition, a new egoistic law that says: “You can have a wonderful life, everyone will receive fulfillment and will be happy, but only if you are all equal.” It’s like a mother who says to her children, “Do you want some ice cream? You will get it only if you are connected and don’t fight. If not, no one will get anything.”

This is how nature calls us to advance to equality, so that within the equality we will be able to discover an even greater opportunity. The main point is not the ice cream that you will get when you reach equality; you are being drawn by the ice cream so that you will reach equality and feel that it’s the highest value. When you eat the ice cream, you already enjoy it from a state of equality and connection. You suddenly discover that the ice cream that is eaten together when you are connected is 1000 times tastier than the ice cream you ate by yourself.

So what does nature want? It wants you to feel that you have received a new vessel, a new desire that enables you to discover a taste that is a 1000 times greater, NRNHY instead of Nefesh. You become free of the limitations of life and death and begin to exist in an infinite space. You reach a new perspective, a feeling of limitless freedom from the limitations that the ego imposed on you.

You feel how wonderful it is to connect with others. The ice cream was just an excuse, a trigger that brought about the changes, the discovery of the new integral desire. This is the process the whole world has to go through now.

We are going through this process consciously, as we understand where we’re headed. Therefore, we have to help the rest of the world, by explaining to them that they shouldn’t try to reach connection in the old ways anymore. They have all failed. Let’s try a new approach, a very simple approach: If we unite, we will succeed.

For others it will be a simple egoistic goal: to unite in order to succeed. But because we organize it and we are together, through us they will receive another filling. The desires of the world are “round” and our desires are “straight.” So when they connect to us they will also receive this straight form, just like a musical instrument that fills its bag. After all, the “circle” already contains the straight form that has the Masach (screen) and works with the Light. Then everyone will start feeling that it’s this integral form that gives the special filling, NRNHY, and thanks to our connection, the world will advance.

No Room For Mistakes

Dr. Michael LaitmanThere is only one desire that was created—to receive pleasure and delight—and there is nothing else that can be attributed to the created being. Everything else is the correction of the creation, the external form the desire to receive can take on as the Light influences it.

There is the upper one, which is bestowal and there is the lower, which is receiving. The lower can receive such bestowal from the upper that will change its external form; like a wolf that is in sheep’s clothing, it is still a wolf! This is actually what we do with our ego, with the evil in us, by trying to give it a form that is similar to the Creator.

We should understand that everything takes place within the desire to receive, since this makes us face the fact that everything depends on us and everything takes place in us. There is nothing on the outside; all of reality is inside us, in our desire to receive.

The desire always remains a desire, and I mustn’t try to change it. I shouldn’t increase it or decrease it, torture myself by fasting or beat myself. I only have to demand that the Creator change the form of my desire and make it similar to Him.

There are no other actions, except turning to the Light, by which I can attain a real change. I will only harm myself and distort nature by any other way. How can I do something with my desires by myself? It is even ridiculous to expect this. If a person acts this way, he distorts his whole way, his perception, his understanding, and his approach.

This is what all of humanity does, by hoping to achieve something by different actions like revolutions in science and in society. All our actions so far, starting from the time we came down from the trees, became human, and began to develop, were only meant to show us that all these actions were wrong.

Now we are on the verge of a change, and by examining all our evolution we see that it is the egoistic desire that forced us to follow this whole way. Everything that we have done so far is one big mistake.

It was impossible to avoid it since it is impossible to advance without the revelation of evil. But the mistake was in trying to deal with our desires, to limit them or to fill them, and to change them by ourselves. We always hoped to reach a better life by that, but every time we were wrong and received blows instead of pleasures.

Now we have to weigh things: Is it worthwhile to go on this way? It is now impossible even if we would want to. We will not be able to move forward in order to go on corrupting our desire to receive; there is nowhere to go! All the systems have reached a dead end and cannot be fulfilled any further.

If we continue in the same direction, the only thing we can expect is a world war as the last definitive blow. We can either start by conscious changes or summon terrible afflictions upon us. But the whole process was necessary in order to bring us to the recognition of evil, to our approach to correcting ourselves and the world.

Summit Rio +20: Failed Expectations

Dr. Michael LaitmanOpinion (Laurence Brahm, lawyer, global activist, international mediator, political columnist and author): “The UN Conference on Sustainable Development or Rio+20 held June 20-22 was intended to reaffirm political commitments made during the Earth Summit of 1992, and to frame a roadmap of principles to address climate change, food and water security, and the crisis of our global financial system. In the months leading to Rio+20 anticipation of some positive outcome was high. There was some reason for hope.

“UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon himself had declared, ‘We need to invent a new model — a model that offers growth and social inclusion — a model that is more respectful of the planet’s finite resources.  That is why I have made sustainable development my number one priority.’

“But unfortunately, that is not what happened at Rio.

“The truth is Rio+20 failed us. Executive director of Greenpeace, Kumi Naidoo summed it up. ‘The Rio Earth Summit will not bring about the Future We Want, it will provide a stark and distressing reminder of the present we have. A world in which public health, human rights and sustainable development are subordinate to private profit, shallow national interest and business as usual.’…

“Rio+20 was a UN orchestrated theatre aimed to give people hope that global leaders can construct a framework to assure our planet’s future. For those on the ground it was just the opposite, underscoring political inability and lack of will to address financial crisis, poverty, income gap widening, food and water security, and imminent disasters of unmitigated climate change. …

“In the corridors and streets activists and youth recognized that the problems of our planet are not in trying to create more consumption, but rather in over consumption.”

My Comment: Reducing production and saving will solve nothing! This is only the next mistake of humanity, distracting it from the only solution: to correct its egoistic nature, to unite like all parts of nature, but consciously, according to the level of “man” (speaking).

Since our egoism (help against you, the Pharaoh, approaching the Creator) must lead us to correction, then it will not let us reach agreement at any conference, and this will push us so that we will not remain in it, in exile, but we will be forced to come out of it (our Egypt).

An Integral From Our World To Infinity

Dr. Michael LaitmanBaal HaSulam, “Talmud Eser Sefirot, Part 2 “Histaklut Pnimit,” Item 96: It is a wonderful law in the Upper Worlds that in every Sefira that we choose to examine, we will find ten inner Sefirot. If we take a single Sefira from those Eser inner Sefirot, we find another ten inner Sefirot inside the first Sefira. Also, if we take one Sefira of the inner, inner Sefirot, we once more find Eser Sefirot in it, which are inside the previous inner inner, and so on and so forth incessantly.

Our mind can’t grasp these spiritual principles, the incorporation of the Sefirot in each other until Ein Sof, incessantly, since in each of the Sefirot there are another ten and in each of the ten there are ten more, etc. How can we understand what Ein Sof means? Where does it begin and where does it end? We can’t understand that because our mind isn’t built on qualitative assessment but on quantitative assessment. It seems that here too it’s about quantity: ten, ten and once again ten, like in a discrete, numerical system. But this is the wrong impression. All the changes and the divisions are based on quality in separate qualitative circles.

This is why it’s currently so difficult for us to grasp this principle and the concept of infinity. In our life the strongest and the most clever people, the greatest egoists, want to use this world for their own benefit, to bend it and to extract as much money as possible from it, to win the race, to gain control and knowledge, to show off before others, and to feel good about themselves, feeling secure in the present and about the future.

But today they see that they can’t manage anything and they don’t know what to do. The leaders feel helpless. They are trying to calculate how they can overcome this loss of control, which is the main problem of the current crisis. The problem is not the crisis itself, meaning the percentages shown by economic indicators. First, they worried only about these percentages and sums, but now they see that this isn’t the cause, but rather the lack of control of the situation.

It isn’t about the results that we wanted to achieve but didn’t; rather, it’s about the reason for our failures. They don’t know this reason! First, they were the cause of all the successes and the failures, by holding the reins of egoistic management. The world bent before them and obeyed their egoistic rules. But today we can’t cram the world into the egoistic system we’ve created and we can’t manage it. It doesn’t listen anymore; it’s as if it’s arranged differently, leaving us totally perplexed.

Thus the difference between the two systems is gradually revealed: the numerical and the analog; the system that operates on a quantitative basis and the system based on quality. Nature from its part reveals to us some of the systems that operate according to quality, an analog system, that tie everything together in order to achieve collective work. This is how the force of the Creator is revealed.

We, on the other hand, have always worked differently, using the egoistic force of the created being, which was the result of the shattering, each one on his own. This is why we’ve always acted on a quantitative basis, according to numbers. Our whole perception is based on this principle. This is why we feel so helpless when the spiritual world is revealed to us and is getting closer to us. It’s the revelation of the spiritual system, of the Creator, and this is what brings about the current crisis.

While in the spiritual world, the Sefirot are each divided into ten and so forth until Ein Sof, this world is based on the numerical principle. But since we are talking about infinity, it destroys the quantitative basis and turns it into a qualitative one. It’s like an integral and so the crisis is called integral and the modern world is integral.

An integral isn’t just a simple sum. In a sum there are a number of components. And the integral includes Ein Sof, infinity: It includes such components that can’t be included in a quantitative calculation. It’s like the problem of making a circle into a square, where it’s required to build a square that is identical in its area to a circle. This problem has no solution on our level.

What Are We Escaping?

Dr. Michael LaitmanBaal HaSulam, “Introduction to The Book of Zohar,” Item 29: This is regarded as being under the Sitra Achra and the Klipot, whose role is to expand and enhance his will to receive and make it exaggerated and unrestrained in any way, to provide one with all the material he needs to work with and correct.

During the first phase of the correction when we are drawn to goodness, we discover evil. This revelation is necessary and so we have to prepare the environment and ourselves in advance in order to be able to bear it. We have to understand that this is the “matter” that we should correct and that its correction depends on the recognition of evil.

The point is not the suffering itself, but that we discover that the ego doesn’t let us bestow. I attribute the evil not to the unpleasant feeling that the desire brings about, but to the obstacles that it places on my way to unite with others and through them with the Creator.

This is the reason that the ego is called an “evil inclination.” On the whole, it can bring me pleasure and not troubles. Let’s take the seven years of satiety in Egypt for example, were they good or bad for the people of Israel? What if a person is detached from spirituality and under the domination of his ego? What if he knows that, is sure of that, and at the same time experiences pleasant feelings in his desire to receive, but feels bad in his soul?

Could it be that it is a sign of positive development? After all, despite the egoistic pleasures that I feel while I am in exile in Egypt under the domination of evil, the ego rules me and doesn’t allow me to advance towards spirituality, towards the Creator. Then comes another phase, when my ego begins to receive blows. Is this better? Is this easier?

On the one hand, yes, since the troubles of the ego enable me to escape it. On the other hand, it’s the ego that agrees to escape from Egypt because of the troubles and not in order to adhere to the Creator. In this case, my work is double: I have to rise above my egoistic feelings and use them as an accelerator for advancement.

Let’s draw this dilemma. Within my desire to receive I can experience either good feelings or unpleasant feelings (good and evil). If I feel good in Egypt and my intention is aimed at myself, then how do I assess the new state? If it’s according to the egoistic desire, then I feel good on the animal level. Then I do not intend to escape anywhere.

But what if I feel bad within my desire to receive? If I tie myself to this bad feeling, I’m in a general crisis, in a global crisis. If I understand that this bad feeling helps me aim my intention towards others, at bestowal, then I consider this state as good since it helps me advance just like Pharaoh brought the people of Israel closer to the Creator. No matter how bad it may be, there is a mitigating factor—the advancement towards the goal.

But at the same time, the desire I am in helps me assess the state I am in, and supports the decision. Let’s look at another option. I feel good, but I want to aim my intention towards others, at the Creator. Does this good feeling help me rise to Him? No. It turns out that this is a bad state (evil).

But I have grown stronger after “seven years of satiety” during which I felt good, and my intention was altruistic. Now comes a bad state, “seven years of hunger.” Do they help me on my way to the Creator?

On the whole the trouble of the egoistic desire can, on the one hand, raise me above it in an attempt to escape, when it’s easier for me to choose spirituality, and on the other hand, it can make my advancement more difficult. Why? The Torah tells us about a famine in the Land of Canaan that forced the sons of Jacob to go down to Egypt. They felt bad and they moved forward. In Egypt, they felt good at first, and then there were troubles again. So why did the evil that was revealed at the end of the exile help them leave it?

The answer is that when I feel bad, I have to treat it not as a bad feeling that pushes me in a certain direction and that’s it. No. I have to resist the evil and to check myself and what makes me escape. Do I escape because it hurts or because I want to reach bestowal?

Thus the evil requires double work. In a good state it’s hard for me to escape the goodness. But if after the goodness trouble comes, the level of difficulty rises. We escaped the troubles of Egypt in the past, and now I have to rise above the bad feelings and to feel the blows not from a bad life but from the domination of evil.

At first the domination of Pharaoh seemed good to the people of Israel, and now they feel bad because of it. And it isn’t because of despair; they are not hungry. Later they will complain when they remember the pots full of meat.

Today too, there are nations that are satisfied with a “full bowl,” and don’t care about their rulers, while others are so developed that they cannot put up with a hateful regime; even if it threatens them and despite all the material benefits, they feel a need to break free. Thus the desire to receive develops according to its four phases.

The Correction Of Evil: Going All The Way

Dr. Michael LaitmanA person must discover the whole corrupt vessel of the desire. But he discovers it only if he wants to reach bestowal, goodness. So if a person hasn’t started his spiritual work yet and doesn’t connect with the group hoping to reach bestowal upon the Creator, he doesn’t even approach the evil inclination.

So the evil inclination Kabbalists speak about doesn’t exist in our world. Our corporeal desires are aimed at food, sex, family and the human desires are aimed at money, respect, and knowledge. On the whole it is called the “animal” level.

As for the evil inclination, it starts on a higher level if a person is inclined to love, connection and mutual guarantee. If he acts in this direction, then to that extent he increasingly discovers the size of the evil inclination. At the same time the Light is revealed to him, which evokes in him the desire to correct himself. Eventually, a person comes to a state where he can’t bear the evil and from that certain point he begins to turn it into a good inclination.

There are two levels here: Bina, which means to bestow in order to bestow (the correction of 248 desires) and Keter, to receive in order to bestow (the correction of 365 desires). Eventually a person corrects all the evil inclination.

But evil is first revealed when a person makes the first attempts to bestow. So the evil inclination is not revealed in our world, which means not in a person who doesn’t draw the Light that Reforms in order to correct himself. All the discernments that are revealed in ordinary people don’t need correction since it’s their nature. Their desires and their attributes don’t stand in the way of true connection.

The truth is only being revealed these days. In the center of humanity there are Kabbalists (the forefathers) and we, Bnei Baruch, are around them. All the others do not yearn for bestowal, but they will receive an “illumination” from us and then they will understand that there is only one way—connection.

A person who tries to form a system of mutual connection is the one who discovers the evil inclination, the force of resistance, his reluctance, and the unpleasantness of this idea. So if a person doesn’t discover his connection with the environment, with the group, he doesn’t discover the evil inclination since it’s only discovered in what is against the shattering among us. So it’s a great thing to discover all the matter of creation, the whole evil inclination, and only the one who advances further and further until Gmar Tikkun (the end of correction) can do that.

Entering The World Of Emotions

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: Should the participants in the first course of integral education know about the distant limits of the evolution of human awareness, about the new mutual relations, or about how new opportunities are revealed when moving in the same direction?

Answer: I don’t think so, what for? In the first course people are told about the history of the egoistic evolution of humanity, that the ego has reached its limits and there is nothing ahead. Nature, it turns out, is integral, and humanity has become integral. Only we humans are not integrally connected to each other, and so we feel a crisis, a state of both inner and external material emptiness. Then we must talk about the integrality of nature, which is a closed system, about its systems of mutual provision, mutual support, about the analog system, etc. We should educate people about what this system provides us with.

Here we put them through a roundtable workshop or simply a circle. They must feel that the force of unity and connection revealed among us creates something that is totally new, which allows them to feel, to dare, to be filled, and most importantly, to understand and explore our world and everything else directly through it.

Suddenly new options are revealed, and they begin to see that there is a greater chance in that, but they discover it by themselves. Why do we need that? So that it will not seem farfetched and unbelievable, or even mystical and imaginary. It is best to bring them consistently and wisely to the point where they can actually feel. After all, if a person is actually just an organ that wants filling since we all simply want to fill ourselves no matter what, and then we suddenly begin to feel that there are opportunities here and we don’t need anything else.

Later, while working in the group and listening to lectures, a person begins to understand where he is in his current state, then it is easier for him to understand his past state. Everything humanity has been through becomes very simple, a short egoistic period of development. After all, what are 100 – 200 – 300 million years?

The Ceiling of Egoistic Growth

Dr. Michael LaitmanToday we have an opportunity we have never had before. The method of correction is being revealed, and if we were to use it, it would be very easy for us to attain the very necessary mutual guarantee and unity. Many people, among the nation of Israel, already understand this and are coming closer to this. We have created a large organization, which brings to life the principles of mutual guarantee in Israel, and I am full of hope that correction will happen in a good way. Because otherwise, gently speaking, our journey will be unpleasant, but it will lead to the same place. One way or another, the goal is clear: Everyone must become a single whole.

Question: Why did the time specifically come now?

Answer: We see this by the state of mankind and nature. The world has come to a common crisis, and the first to reach the crisis was the part of the world that determines the lifestyle and the form and rate of advancement of mankind. Moreover, we are not speaking about problems with technology, economy, education, culture, science, personal life, divorce, drug addiction, depression, which is becoming the number one disease, and so on. No, this is an inner and very deep crisis of our ego caused by the fact that the left, the egoistic line, has completed its development.

Over the course of the last two millennia while the Jewish people were in exile, growing egoism was pushing people towards different goals and forced us to discover new continents, build industry and trade. We kept moving forward, forming new systems and mechanisms. We thought that egoistic existence was enough to reach a good life. In the last one hundred or two hundred years, egoism grew exponentially, but it has suddenly as if reached the “ceiling” and stopped.

Fact: We no longer desire anything new. The young generation does not set any grand goals: to become wealthy or powerful, or to make scientific discoveries. On the contrary, despair and fatigue are growing, as if young people were born old. They no longer have the same aspirations as before; they do not want to know, learn, and excel. Studies show that these desires have reached saturation and faded. Thus, the left line has stopped developing, and we no longer see the light ahead of us.

Nature is also showing us a sad picture of the end of the road: The sources of energy are nearing exhaustion and the environment is collapsing.

Human society is also falling apart before our eyes: Family and interpersonal relations are being broken, separation is increasing. All this points to the end of the left line, and now, the people of Israel must activate the right line.

During the two thousand of years of exile, the people of Israel only advanced in the left line, together with the world. The world is not able to advance in the right line, only the people of Israel are capable of this. This is why they are now entering a historic stage: They carry the responsibility to realize the right line and combine it with the left line.

The past two thousand years have already introduced the left line in the Jews. It is written that the sons of Israel went into exile in order to connect the souls of the nations to them. This is the left line, egoism, which today the people of Israel have plenty of, even more than the others. Thus way, the only thing that is left for them to do is to realize the right line inside them and balance it with the left line, by creating the middle line. This way they will show the direction to the entire world, and it will be easy for the people to accept this path

To Become Nothing And Stand Before The Creator

Dr. Michael LaitmanA person constantly cancels himself, constantly carries out the will of the Creator, constantly “sends himself into nothingness” on top of the desire, growing in him.

At the beginning, I nullify myself above the small desire of the still level, and then I am as if in the mother’s womb, in the “nine-month slumber.” Then, a group of desires, belonging to the vegetative level, awaken in me, and again, I have to nullify myself against them.

However, in order to nullify myself, to make myself nothing, I need to engage myself. Through the actions opposite to the Creator, I create what is called “help against Him” and cancel myself by bestowing to Him.

In the end, I discard nothing. All the desires are used, as it is said: “Everything is added to the general account.” I ask only to nullify myself, but this comes only through my understanding and feeling of myself and everyone, the whole world. Precisely this allows me to adhere to the Creator.

Question: Can I say that self-nullification is love?

Answer: Love is manifested not in self-nullification, but in greatness, when I use all my properties to give, to bestow. Love means that I bestow, establish connection, and in general am active.

And self-nullification is the quality of a fetus or baby, and not an expression of love.
