How Do I Attain Spiritual Life?

249.02Only when I try to exit my desire to receive do I reveal that I am incapable of doing so. I do not want my egoism to determine my entire life because it is an evil inclination that prevents me from attaining eternity, perfection, and the purpose of creation; it obstructs my connection with others and blinds me to the good that lies within such a connection.

Egoism hides everything from me and instills false values and condemns me to a temporary, fleeting life. Therefore, I declare it my enemy.

Egoism was revealed when the soul of Adam HaRishon broke, when the connection between its desires was torn apart. There was a vessel composed of ten complete Sefirot, and it shattered. Now, instead of unity among all these parts, there is rejection of one another, and hatred is revealed.

This is what is called the evil inclination; it is when each person thinks he should reign and care only for himself, and others must serve him. This is why egoism is called the “angel of death,” because if I am cut off from others, I can sense only the life I feel now in this world: a weak spark of existence.

But if I am connected with others, I sense the common flow of life that passes through everyone. This is what spiritual life means. Either we feel life as we do today, or we reach the sensation of the collective life in which there are 125 degrees, each higher than the previous one. Yet all of them already belong to eternal life, which we feel because the light flows between us.

Right now, I am unable to sense the angel of death in the simple fact that I ask for something for myself, because this understanding must come from above, from the upper light. For this, I need at least a slight illumination, which I still do not have. And so I go to the group against my will, without faith, and I make efforts to connect with the friends. I do not want connection and neither do they, but we act according to the advice of the Kabbalists.

Because we strive to unite above our unwillingness, we forcibly draw the upper light toward ourselves. And when it shines upon us, we begin to feel the difference between spiritual and material life and gradually advance.

Everything Comes from Attainment

222Question: What does it mean that the science of Kabbalah is clothed in the names of the Creator?

Answer: It means that everything you study in Kabbalah is only something external, while attainment is a deeper layer. After all, everything that Kabbalists write comes from their attainment, from what they reveal in the reflected light.

Question: Since all the wisdom of the Torah is revealed in the reflected light, can we say that the reflected light is the left line?

Answer: No, not necessarily.

See the Spiritual World

214We perceive this world through our mind and feelings; those are the two instruments we have. With their help, we gradually begin to understand the world we find ourselves in and we learn to use it to our advantage.

All that is wonderful, but the fact is that there is another world, a vast and higher world that we do not sense. We live the allotted number of years in this world, preoccupied with our family and work, and are unaware that an eternal and perfect world exists alongside us.

We see that people live and die, but it turns out that this is not all; there is another life, and it is possible to reveal it, attain understanding, awareness, and sensation of it. And for this, we need to develop.

We are born with organs of perception inherited from our parents, through which we can feel this world and settle into it. But it is possible to develop additional organs of perception through which we will feel the upper world and begin to live in it. As it is said: “You will see your world in your lifetime.”

There are people who are already born with a desire to reveal the upper world, and for others, it comes later in life. Some feel unhappy their entire lives as if they are lacking something in life. They do not understand why they live, and what to do with this life, but they do not know where to look for the upper world.

Namely, we want to attain the upper world, and there is a methodology called the science of Kabbalah that allows us to do this. But this is a very difficult path that requires great efforts, perseverance, and hard work from a person. The problem is that you do not break into the spiritual world by force; you need to format yourself correctly in order to enter it. I have to mold myself into a special form that suits the spiritual world.

This correspondence of a person to the upper world is the central point of the method of Kabbalah. That is, the question is how to explain to a person and give him the strength and instructions to adjust himself to the upper world, to find his place in the general spiritual system, to feel the Creator, to draw closer to Him, and to begin to serve Him. The science of Kabbalah teaches all of that.

In this world, a person uses the qualities given to him from birth: the mind, the feelings, and three-dimensional perception. But if we were born in another world, we would apparently have different qualities.

There are stories about Native Americans being unable to see Columbus’s ships approaching the shore because the ships were so large and unfamiliar, and the indigenous people were accustomed to the small boats they used. It was only by the way the waves surged around the hulls that they realized that something was in the water and discovered the ship.

I do not know whether it actually happened or not, but it very well could have. We exist in a certain world, and we format ourselves according to it. If I were suddenly to meet a person who lived several thousand years ago, I would not be able to understand him, because our minds are different and our approaches to life are different.

And the spiritual world is altogether completely different from our world. It is written about it: “I saw an opposite world.” And if everything is opposite there, then how can I imagine it and bring myself into correspondence with it?

Kabbalah answers: by working in faith above reason, which helps us acquire new vision, new sensory organs in order to see what others cannot see. Just as the Native Americans did not see Columbus’s large ships since they were accustomed only to small watercraft. We are in the same world, but I see and they do not.

This is the kind of spiritual vision we need to achieve. Although at the moment we do not see the spiritual world, we will gradually correct our sensory organs and will see it. In order to expand our senses to the perception of the spiritual world, we must work in faith above reason, that is, above our mind. Now I perceive everything in my mind, but by opening it, I will see the world differently; not as three-dimensional, but in other dimensions.

You Attain Everything in the Light of Bestowal

701Question: Why does a person’s inner change in his approach to reality from reception to bestowal grant him the ability to attain the present, past, and future without limitation?

Answer: The light, the quality of bestowal, revealed within a person includes everything because it is the only force in all of nature; it is nature itself.

The light governs us, the created beings, because nothing else has been created besides us. Its ever-increasing revelation within us reveals everything beyond time, space, and movement.

Therefore, by revealing the quality of bestowal, a person comes to know all of His (the Creator’s) actions from beginning to end. “There is no Creator without a created being who reveals Him.”

The quality of bestowal acting upon the created being is the Creator. When this quality, which created me, begins to rule within me, this means that I am revealing the Creator. The dominion of the desire to bestow, the intention of bestowal, the quality of bestowal within me, is called the revelation of the Creator to me.

This revelation occurs to the extent that I myself become bestowing. But then, how can I say that I am revealing the Creator? Who is this “I” that still reveals Him? It follows that within me qualities that have not yet revealed the Creator still remain.

But later, when I reveal everything completely, there is no longer a division between “I” and “He.” There exists only the quality of bestowal, boundlessly ruling within me, and nothing else.

In the end, we replace the force that motivates us. We ourselves want to replace it so that instead of constant thoughts about receiving, I think only about how to bestow.

In truth, I am simply accustomed to working for the sake of receiving, but there is nothing good in this. It is a habit from which I cannot free myself.

Baal HaSulam says that the transition to the desire to bestow is only a psychological difficulty. Because within the desire to bestow, there are far greater possibilities to enjoy and to develop. But we are accustomed to acting for the sake of reception, and so we continue to act.

Therefore, against our habitual nature, we must compel an external force, the surrounding light, to act so that it will replace the governing program within us. This is called: “My sons have defeated Me.”
