Question: In order to come out of Egypt our ego has to go through the “ten plagues,” what does that mean?

Answer: The ten plagues of Egypt are the ten plagues that a person feels on himself, on his ego, which help him get rid of the ego. If I didn’t feel the blows, I would want to stay in the ego. But because I feel the blows while in my ego, they help me break away from it.

Each blow is stronger in quality than the previous one. Suppose I lost everything that I have in gambling, (although it isn’t about that at all), the next blow can be the loss of someone dear, etc. Actually nothing in the world happens with money and not with one’s relatives and not with anything, but the inner feeling is as if you lose everything.

There is an article in the book Shamati about that, when a person enters spirituality he thinks that he leaves the whole world, his family, and that he is detached from everything. This detachment is necessary. The ten plagues help us rise systematically above certain layers of our ego until we totally exit it, which means that we escape it.

Above the last level we are in total darkness making one more effort. The darkness symbolizes that we don’t know what is expected ahead. But since we are headed towards the attribute of bestowal, the darkness helps us.

If you are moving forward towards the Light, your ego is only too happy about it. But when you are moving forward in the dark, you can be sure that the ego will not disturb you, won’t do you any evil, and won’t take everything for itself afterward.

Question: That means that this is some kind of a trick?

Answer: This “trick” was in Egypt before the ten plagues, when no matter how hard we tried, everything was aimed at the ego. Therefore, “The children of Israel cried from the work” in building the two cities Pithom and Ramses.

Here, however, this is it, here we are headed towards the dark and not towards the Light as we were used to saying. What is more, all these blows and all the advancement are based only on our growing connection, which brings the group to this state where on the one hand the ego is revealed, the great internal hatred, and on the other hand, the clear recognition that only mutual guarantee can lead the group forward. What does that mean?

When you see that there is great hatred, you are ready to connect with everyone in order not to ever worry about anything for yourself, but only about others. All your enemies are also ready to care about one another. This readiness is revealed despite the great hatred, when you can’t even imagine how it is possible to wish these people good, and that you now have to think about them as the most important thing and in no way think of yourself. A serious, juicy detachment from the ego is taking place here!

Question: Can the Book of Exodus help us get out of egoism?

Answer: The fact is that any spiritual action must first be reflected in our world. That is why the story of getting out of egoism was first shown in a small group of people, and today it is repeated in the whole world.

No book in the world can help us with that. Only by passing the stages of correction, will we be able to understand and comment on it correctly.

This is a problem because people read it like a historical novel. But I see in it the description of the most serious internal changes in a person, which he must pass through in relation to the group and together with it, finding within himself a force that is called “Moshe” (Moses) from the word “Limshoch” (to pull out). This force pulls the group out of egoism and raises it to the revelation of the Creator.

Moshe is the point of connection that we reveal between us, and which guides us. The upper Force is revealed inside this point.

Thus, we come to Mount Sinai, to the mountain of hatred, around which we stand. It divides us, and we see only hatred in front of us, but we stand around it because we have nowhere to go.

In spite of this hatred, we have to guarantee for each other in our collective mutual guarantee. But if we get stuck in hatred, in egoism, that will be the place of our spiritual death.

Question: But after the exodus from Egypt, there was no state when a whole group got out of egoism. Next, only individuals exited, but not groups. There is no such experience. What should we do?

Answer: You should continue to work. And we are doing it. What is the difference? The work in the group was described then, so it came from there: “Love thy neighbor as thyself,” “from the love of friends to love for the Creator.” That is all described in those sources.

That is why there are no other principles. The spiritual system, the system of all the worlds does not change; it is manifested in the same way just on the lower layers of egoism, which must be corrected. But the laws remain the same.

Only after he despairs from nature, can he ask for help from Heaven, so that he will be helped above nature.

We should try to connect and perform actions of bestowal among us in order to evoke the Reforming Light. When the Light influences us we will feel that we are less and less worthy of connection. It says: “Come to Pharaoh, for I have hardened his heart.” By wanting to resemble the Creator, we are getting closer to Him and at the same time feel that we are drawing away from Him.

Here a person is required to do special work: He doesn’t escape the battle, but understands that this hardening of the heart will help him reveal the necessity for the power of bestowal, no matter what, without any preliminary conditions. Eventually a person is ready for everything, no matter what, independent of the conditions, the group, the world. One way or the other the main thing is to acquire the power of bestowal, the power of connection

– What for? What will you gain from it?

– Nothing, except for the power of bestowal itself.

It isn’t enough just to talk about it. We should try to attain this attitude towards others by working in the group and in dissemination. It doesn’t have to be expressed externally, but if a person tries to reach others, then he really encounters the king of Egypt and sees that his ego won’t let him do anything.

Then a person goes through the “Ten Plagues of Egypt” and sees how under the influence of a special force from Above, his ego gradually surrenders. Every time “Pharaoh” raises his head and insists, he receives another blow. This detaches a person from the ego and enables him to finally escape it.

Escape where? A person escapes from Pharaoh, which means from the power that separates him from others. First it is just an escape, rising above it, and then a person begins to practically work on connection. In Egypt, in the desire to receive, he couldn’t do that. This is how we reach the “Receiving of the Torah,” which means mutual guarantee, and start the period of “forty years in the desert.”

Baal HaSulam, “The Arvut (Mutual Guarantee)”: With this collective responsibility, each member of the nation was liberated from worrying about the needs of his own body and could keep the commandment, “Love thy friend as thyself” in the fullest measure, and give all that he had to any needy person, since he no longer cared for the existence of his own body, as he knew for certain that he was surrounded by six hundred thousand loyal lovers, who were standing ready to provide for him.

This is the condition: The upper force is revealed only if we really need it for unification.

Question: Where does this agreement come from?

Answer: It comes from the general desire. One is not able to correct himself without the other. The correction is made through the universal unity. The force that corrects needs to be common to everyone.

The force and the mind, the effort and the approach, everything needs to descend from Above. Everything accumulates into one and as if “sews” me to others.

This is what we need to think about. If we want this to happen, then first of all, we need mutual guarantee. After all, in the general mutual inclusion, every single point that is soldered with the others contains all the rest.

Question: Is our cry to the Creator our agreement to this?

Answer: I would say yes. Only actually it isn’t a forced scream. We reach agreement about our state, about the helplessness, and the need to reach mutual bestowal, mutual guarantee, mutual connection, and mutual assistance and support. When you begin to connect all of these things, you discover that you lack the upper force. Then you really need it, while previously your needs were of a personal nature.

You discover that you need the upper force in order to really fulfill the conditions of connection in mutual bestowal between everyone. But it’s not starry-eyed idealism already since the goal is to discover the true attribute of bestowal that lies above the needs of all.

Thus, here the general agreement is required: We carry out the unification but not for the sake of corporeal benefit. Thus, it arrives as a result of our search, our work in analyzing the state.

Question: By what does the friend complete me?

Answer: Without one another, we are not able to understand what we need to receive the Light that Reforms. We can’t reveal our real deficiency if I don’t help him and he doesn’t help me.

Question: Do I ask for the friends?

Answer: I try to pray for the friends, I worry that they will receive spiritual revelation, understand, and feel what the spiritual world is. When everyone supports each other, each one shows the correct desire.

You want something that seems to you like spirituality. And it doesn’t matter how correctly you picture it to yourself. Let everything be artificial, until we receive the Light that Reforms. And still, try to think about the friends: “I wish that they will achieve this before me.” If you initially wish for the greatest things for the friends, this is already spirituality.

How can we correct ourselves in order to have a good, peaceful, and safe life? Otherwise, we’ll remain unemployed, with a crisis in family relationships and upbringing, and with problems in everyday life. We arrived at the point where the absence of mutual understanding and concern became the determining factor of our destiny. All of humanity is like one family, but this family is dysfunctional.

That’s why we are talking about the reconciliation that needs to happen with the help of a third force. When problems arise between spouses, they seek the help of a professional psychologist (it’s fashionable now to have a personal psychologist), who then gradually brings them closer to each other. He or she talks to each of them separately, talks to both of them together, asks questions, explains the situation, and obliges them interact and open themselves up to each other. He helps them to first understand themselves and then to understand their partner.

And then it becomes clear to each of them that even if they are opposite to the other, it’s worthwhile to make mutual concessions. And so one doesn’t lay out every complaint, and the other forgives and concedes in the things that he or she doesn’t like, as it is said that “Love covers all sins.”

We understand mutual “sins” since we are all egoists by nature and don’t take anyone else into consideration. But if it’s clear to us that there is no other choice, whether in a family life, in industry, or in ecology, then out of helplessness we’ll accept the method that will help us connect to each other. This method is purely psychological: talking to each other in order to better know and understand a person’s character or the peculiarities of an entire nation—to talk and not to be ashamed, to speak openly, like intelligent grown up people.

Yes, we are different, but we need to unite above the differences, without suppressing anyone or reproaching for unpleasant tendencies and properties. Everyone has them, but we rise above them and say: “Love covers all sins.” Sins exist, but gradually, out of love, we stop paying attention to them!

It’s the way a mother considers her child to be the most wonderful, the most beautiful. She is incapable of seeing anything bad or unworthy in him because love blinds her and she sees only the best in him. And even though there is bad in him too, she doesn’t notice it. But conversely, in a neighbor’s child she sees the negative and not the positive part because she has no love for him. But as soon as she feels love for him, she won’t be able to see anything bad even in him, but only good.

We see this in life. If you tell a mother about flaws in her child’s character or behavior, she won’t agree with that. She will either completely justify him or deny everything altogether because she truly doesn’t see anything bad in him. This is what we call, “love covers all sins.”

Likewise, one gradually comes towards the mutual guarantee that we need to reach. There is no choice, and we are beginning to examine and study each other from afar. But from the beginning, this study needs to be aimed at building the connection of love above the differences.

That is, we make concessions in advance, and then we get an opportunity to also unite on a level of feeling. And when we come closer, the world becomes peaceful and secure. We aren’t afraid to let our children play outside by themselves since any person will look after them no worse than us, and we’ll care this way for others. If we dream and imagine a good society, then of course it has to be a society in which the law of mutual guarantee is observed.

We have to convene internally, so that we will be together, as one man in one heart, in one thought, so that the point of unity will be revealed among us, as one of our friends put it as “a mad feeling of love that seeped into our hearts in the Arava convention.” We should hold on to this point again.

Not only do have to hold on to it again, but we also have to feel it, to reveal it now much more than then when it was first discovered. First it is revealed simply as a point, as something in which I find myself.

Later it seems to close, and to diminish gradually by the different feelings and problems in this world. But it doesn’t go anywhere. We’ve already attained it, and it is ours.

Now we should feel this point on a totally new dimension: His power, His desire, and the source of our lives.

Then we will feel how all this operates around us. We will see the forces that are behind people, and how they operate everything: how people move, their thoughts, their desires, their bodies. We will see how everything turns and leads to one stream, to the attainment of the Creator.

We should see this for the first time, even if we won’t understand it, but we will be included in this state.

Question: What wave are you expecting?

Answer: I expect that people will come prepared, and will know what is about to happen as well as they can, that they will understand the essence of the convention, its goal, and that they will be able to quickly be included in one another.

There is no need for personal acquaintances. It is okay if I don’t know anyone. I only know that everyone has come in order to unite and to see and feel the upper level above us, the next level of the world.

Question: What should they do?

Answer: I strongly recommend that those who are behind the screen do everything that they can so that they won’t feel the screens, but rather feel themselves and us together, so that we will rise above the distance and the virtual connections that separate us, so that although we see and feel ourselves only through technical means of communication, we will feel that we have one heart and that it is on one place. It isn’t in Vilnius or anywhere else, it is above us, above all the corporeal obstacles like time, movement and distance.

We are together! I hope that we will feel it this weekend and in this single place we will feel the revelation of the Creator.

Eight years ago at the convention in Sitrin, we all shouted: “We will break though the Machsom (barrier)!” I kept quiet then because there was no point in saying anything or to object. What does it mean to “break through”? Will we, by using our ego, break the spiritual Machsom?

Gradually we began to understand that it is possible to transcend the Machsom only by the connection among us, by repressing the ego and rising to the attribute of bestowal, to mutual connection, above our ego, and then by creating something that is external to us, external to our egoistic “self.”

This is the only way a collective vessel is created, because it can only exist as a collective vessel and not as everyone’s individual vessel! Gradually the spiritual thoughts and desires were formed in us. After all, it is a long way! Look at what we’ve been through since then! It is an internal spiritual revolution inside a person!

We’ve started talking about it and beating the ego since the beginning of the crisis, because the ego has been revealed in the world as a negative force. Since then, we’ve been getting closer to the point of our connection, the point of our adhesion, in which we really find ourselves as being reborn in the upper world, in the next phase of attaining nature.

From a lesson of Rabash: In a place where spirituality isn’t important enough, the shells have a hold. For example, if a person intended to get up for the lesson in the morning, but thoughts and calculations come to his mind: “Why should I get up? What will I learn? What is the point in that?”

The moment spirituality doesn’t seem important, such thoughts immediately come up and tie a person with thick ropes to the bed so that he won’t be able to get up…therefore, we need the accompanying force that will not allow us to fall.”

What all the groups and in fact every person in one way or another lack is the accompanying force. Otherwise we fall one by one, as it says: “A thousand walk into the classroom and one comes out a teacher.” This means that 999 fall.

It may well be that they don’t actually fall physically, but they are weakened internally and are ready to “carry on” this way without attaining the goal of creation, the goal of life. They don’t argue that it is necessary to find an answer to the question “what is the meaning of my life,” but they’ve grown old and they don’t feel they have the strength to do so. This is all because they have not built supporters for themselves, a “railing” that will support them and will help them rise and not let them fall. This is very important.

It’s like making a treaty of mutual help,  a commitment to the relationships between the friends, between the groups. Therefore, it is so important to know what is happening in every group and to help each other.

It is like it says: “There is no prophet in his own town,” and friends from other groups can sometimes help a person and influence him more than those who are next to him. He can suspect that his close friends have some self-interest and can find blame with their egoistic intentions. But he doesn’t feel that way about the other groups. He sees that people from other places begin to speak about him and show him how important he is to them, and on the other hand, he understands that he must correct something inside himself, like it says: “You should post judges and policemen at all your gates.”

It is very important. Usually after every collective ascent several people fall, because after an ascent there is always the hardening of the heart. We should be on guard!

If we are guarantors for one another, we are guarantors in everything, in happiness and sadness. This is because mutual guarantee is not just signing a document. We bind ourselves so that all the states come to us as to a single whole. This is the way a guarantee works in a bank: If a person doesn’t pay, then you pay, without any arguments.

And for us it is even more than that: You must love your friend more than yourself. After all, the commandment of loving thy neighbor demands that you put another in place of your precious self. That is mutual guarantee: a pledge that is impossible to withdraw from.

The upper Light knows how to arrange unity, but we must pave the way for ourselves. In the beginning we become partners and connect to each other. But all of that is still “we”: many and not one. And afterwards our desire will merge into one, and this complete whole will be above us, like a baby whom everyone worries about.

It is written: “The eye of the Creator is on those who fear Him, on those who hope for His loving kindness” (Psalm 33). We constantly look at this baby and constantly support him with all our heart, hoping that he just grows up, that he is sound and healthy, that he is happy and feels good.

This is the way we look at our baby that is above us and belongs to all of us. We all, in our mind and soul, are there, in that one desire. We want to discover within him the spirit of life: the Creator.

I don’t correct myself, but rather my incorporation in others. There is nothing to correct in me, except for my connection with others.

Who are the “others?” Here we should understand that the “me” I was yesterday is not the “me” I am today. I have to clarify the relationship between me and others according to the different states I am in. Every day a person starts a new leaf and the corrections are always with regards to the mutual connection between the Partzufim.

It says that the love among people is aimed at the love of the Creator. The love of friends is the same vessel, the same attitude in which I express my bestowal upon Him. After all, the Creator is the general law, the general attribute that I discover in the mutual connection among all of us.

There is nothing except for the general vessel. In my attitude to the friends, in my spirit, in my heart, I create the Creator. Until then He actually doesn’t exist.

Question: We are having an exercise in the group: Everyone should think about everyone worrying about everyone else in their thoughts. We remind each other to think about that and add, “with the help of the Creator.” Does this bring us to true love?

Answer: Yes, if you mean that everything can exist only with the help of the Reforming Light, then you really are creating the necessary conditions for fulfillment.

Love has no limits; it spreads until Ein Sof, (Infinity) and onward. Each time we define it differently—when we exit our present desires and intentions. The current exercise is effecitve against forgetfulness: A friend reminds another friend about three conditions: me, him and the upper force, the Reforming Light. In other words, the Reforming Light brings us back to one another. Once the Light resided in the connection among us and now when it “welds” us anew it fulfills the necessary condition of the correction in order to reside among us again. This is called a Mitzva (commandment) in the language of Kabbalah.
