How The Informational Gene (Reshimo) Works

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe informational gene (Reshimo) is a form of a previously existing state in which there was fulfillment, the Light inside the desire. It includes information about all the screens and elements that were present both in the Light and the desire: NRNHY and HaVaYaH, the Direct and the Surrounding Lights, the degrees of height and width. But instead of being realized, all of it as if is stored in “the memory.” This is called a “Reshimo.”

That is, I extract certain data from the archive like in a computer, and until I see it on the screen and get the real picture by using the electric forces and all the equipment, it is still called a “Reshimo.” But this informational gene already contains all data, all information, and only the force of its realization is lacking.

Say, I don’t possess such force, or I have it but it’s not realized yet. That is, the Reshimo contains all the details but only in the potential and not realized form.

One Spark Is Not Enough

Dr. Michael LaitmanOur evolution in this world occurs in stages. For thousands of years we have developed from the still to the vegetative, animate, and speaking levels. The wisdom of Kabbalah explains how we ascend from the speaking level and up when we acquire free will, an opportunity to consciously participate in our own development. This participation brings us to the understanding, awareness, and revelation of the Creator, and in the end we become equivalent to Him.

This is what our goal entails, but we reach it by way of gradual development instilled by us. What exactly must we do on our part?

On the whole, creation consists of the Light and the vessel. The Light affects the Kli, desire, and transforms it. What then is the desire’s part?

Desire, which resides in our world, has a spark of Light that penetrated it due to inter-inclusion at the upper degrees. The Light and the Kli merged, and together descended into this world. As a result, there is a spark in the vessel now that yearns for the Light, aimed not only at the Light itself but equivalence to it as well.

If this vessel or man who feels the yearning for the Light desires to evolve in the right way, he must bring himself under the influence of the Light. The spark alone is not sufficient to change oneself and become similar to the Light. It is necessary to draw the effect of the Light to oneself.

Thus, the method of Kabbalah offers us the means to cause the Creator’s actions toward us. Hence, there is an expression of “the work of the Creator,” meaning that the Creator is working on us. There is none else besides Him. But these acts may be realized only “upon our request,” which is regarded as a plea for correction (MAN). We ask to be unified in our desire with the desire of Bina. This is the work: to prepare ourselves to demand correction from the upper Light.

A person who has lit up with this passion is regarded as “human” (Adam) since he acts driven by the desire to be similar (Domeh) to the Creator. But if he doesn’t have such a desire, he is regarded as being at the “animate” level of evolution for now.

What Does Kabbalah Give To A Person

The Most Reliable Guarantee

Dr. Michael LaitmanMan’s basic need is stability and security: He wants a stable economy, living conditions, and physical health. This is a normal instinctive desire to feel secure, which is necessary for the animate body. Animals possess it as well and store food for the winter.

But since our egoistic desire is a degree higher than that of all other creatures, we want to have protection that would serve as life insurance to us; moreover, we think we will live forever. And besides, we wish to provide the most reliable security for our children.

Although we see that it does not work in practice, we still can’t drop the idea. We live in a very unstable and insecure world, and hence it is clear enough that it is impossible to provide any insurance for tomorrow for ourselves or our children by working hard in order to make lots of money.

It is a well known psychological problem. I would say that it is a spiritual problem because if we admit that there is the upper force that arranges our entire life and controls everything that happens to us, no matter what we do, then we cannot provide any security for ourselves.

Based on our life experience, we think that the richer, healthier, and stronger a person is, the more confident and content he may be regarding his future, compared to everyone else. But we see that even that it gives no guarantees and can change in an instant.

Therefore, the wisdom of Kabbalah offers a person another solution. If you connect with the upper force, the only force that rules the entire creation in every case and at any time, it will be the most reliable guarantee of your security.

We were intentionally given this sensation of insecurity, helplessness, fear, and all sorts of doubts so we may find the correct answer in them. That is, we feel insecure so as to realize what can truly give us a reliable security for every occasion in life.

You may think that the Creator is too distant, exists in some other world, and you don’t feel connected to Him (although you can get to know Him). But, here, in our world, the best type of security is to arrange for yourself an environment that will always support and assist you, an environment that would take responsibility for caring for everyone as much as it would care about all the others.

If man lived under conditions of this mutual assistance, it would provide him with security in everything as well.

“Go And Earn From Each Other"

Dr. Michael LaitmanIt is said: “Go and earn from each other,” meaning that we constantly exchange, pass desires and fulfillments to each other, and everybody pays the other and fills him or her with something. Our world is a whole, global, and integral system where it is necessary to provide a covering on every desire, with which we “pay” for its realization and fulfillment.

In order for this whole system to reach its final state of perfection and harmony where all desires will be fulfilled and receive coverage, everyone has to acquire a screen on the desires unfolding within. In other words, everyone needs to have a “coverage,” “money,” to pay for all their needs.

It’s not required to pay with money. One can pay with a good attitude, a smile, mutual services, or labor: “You give me something, and I give you something.” It doesn’t have to be a commodity-money exchange since the definition of “money” is much broader than just paper bills.

Money is payment for the fulfillment of desire, which measures the need and its fulfillment. After all, we don’t know how big a desire is because it is hidden in us. Fulfillment comes from Above, and we can’t say anything about it in advance either. And only by the amount of exerted effort can we judge the value of something, observing how the need and its fulfillment meet by way of my effort, my screen. This is the only way to perform self-evaluation.

In the end, “money” measures the value of my spiritual Partzuf, the value of man. The greater his screen, his ability to tie his desire with the Light, the greater a person. And the greater a person, the closer he is to the Creator, which is defined by his “money,” that is, the size of the coverage, the screen.

In our world, money transforms into coverage of egoism. We do not cover our ego with it, but only increase it and try to fulfill it as it is, egoistically. As a result, we remain empty since fulfillment cannot be received and kept egoistically. If fulfillment enters without the anti-egoistic screen, but rather at the expense of our “fake” money, our egoism, it immediately doubles the desire, and we remain twice as empty as we used to be before.

It means that “the righteous earn twice, while the sinners lose twice,” that is, the latter feel twice as empty. But this internal void is also their revenue because in the end, it will lead them to correction, which is called the “path of suffering.”

Thus, our world develops due to the realization of egoistic desires. In the end, we find ourselves in a terrible, inevitable crisis. It isn’t a monetary crisis; it is a crisis of egoistic use of money. It is a gradual process, and we are yet to witness its full scope in the near future. It will unfold parallel to the wrongful use of one’s ego, exploitation of others, and so forth—all vices of egoism will get revealed at once.

Keeping The Environment Up High

Dr. Michael Laitman with StudentsHaving found the right environment, a person is ready to lower himself in front of it, to accept everything that he is told. At first, he sees the greatness in everything: in the teacher, the studies, and the friends.

However, after some time passes by, he begins to get used to it. He is given an opportunity to join the environment, and then it goes down: “Everything is fine. I am in my company, just as before. I am all set.”

In doing so, a person crosses himself out and rolls down. In his stupidity and pride, he does not understand that he is now being given an opportunity to get closer, to exalt his environment in his eyes. It has to become even higher for him than it was in the beginning.

However, a person looks at the world through a material prism. The friends are already familiar to him and not as great as before when he felt himself to be a humble guest among them. The study material gains coherence, and the teacher loses his previous greatness as well.

This is how egoism grows in order to give a person the opportunity to constantly exalt his environment anew. However, he does not use this “help against him” for the purpose of ascending, but leaves it down there. As a result, instead of ascending, he descends.

This way, people who deserve the ascent and the revelation of the Creator, not having had the chance to enter the environment, immediately start to descend, to neglect the means they had received. As soon as tomorrow, he looks at the environment differently than he looked at it yesterday. The teacher, the group, and the books lose their value in his eyes, albeit at different speeds.

That is why my work is to constantly exalt the importance of the environment: the teacher, the books, and the group. I need to ascend constantly, and not because someone needs my acknowledgment, but simply because I will not attain the greatness of the Creator otherwise.

The environment does not pose itself as something special, and that is why it is very difficult to value the friends. The teacher does not look like a great man either. It has always been difficult to keep the environment up high in Kabbalist groups. Still, we do not have any other way out. We have to begin to help our friends realize the importance of the group.

This does not mean that we have to act important or to artificially strut around with our greatness. It is impossible to pretend here since the Creator is concealed. The higher a person is, the less it is apparent, and the Creator is concealed more than everyone. This is a spiritual law.

That is why we have to increase the importance of the environment in general in order to attain the importance of the Creator through it. If this goal is not burning originally inside of us, if we do not build this system clearly from the greatness of the environment toward the greatness of the Creator, then we will not attain anything. On the contrary, negligence will only grow.

Today, the Bnei Baruch organization exists because I exist. Tomorrow, if I am not here, the same thing that happened to the Rabash’s group will happen: discord in all directions. That is why we need to exalt the essence of our society, its basis, its greatness, flowing from aspiration toward the greatness of the Creator.

If this constantly gains in importance and greatness, filling the head and heart of everyone; if I belong to, exists for, and merge with this; if I long for the greatness of the society because it leads me toward the greatness of the Creator; if I constantly feel this and if this is what moves me, then we will undoubtedly reach the goal in the shortest time.

Where Are The Results?

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: Yesterday, I spent the entire day thinking about the World Kli being directed towards the goal. Did this help to strengthen the mutual guarantee between us?

Answer: We are not able to see the results of our accidental, current actions. Everything we do becomes “consumed” by the common system. A person needs to spend many years working, and then suddenly he acquires the result. Why so? He was correcting things that are very far from him, but they pertain to the same soul, his soul. And he will not be able to feel the soul even to the slightest degree until it becomes corrected entirely even in its lowest, smallest layer.

And this is why it takes time to connect all the parts of his soul in his perception. Only then will he perceive them as his system.

Yesterday you thought about the goal, and you did not receive a result. Moreover, an entire month of similar thoughts can end the same way. But maybe the correct result is the actual sensation of its absence, which evokes a new strong impulse in you.

We simply need to keep working. The common system is great and it is concealed from us. We invest our efforts into it, without knowing the speed of the approaching result and what exactly it will be. And the revelation comes suddenly!

Everyone Is Responsible

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: What is group preparation for the lesson, and does it evoke the Surrounding Light to a greater extent?

Answer: Group preparation for the lesson requires everyone to take on responsibility for the entire group. What is meant by the principle of “If I am not for me, who is for me?” It means that I am responsible for the awakening of the group, and in this way, I tip the scale for the whole world to the cup of mercy.

I make sure my friends never forget about the goal. Why are we here? What degree are we to attain? We strive to attain the degree of “man” (Adam), similarity to the Creator. This must be extremely important for us. Then, we will not forget about what matters during the lesson and will not be distracted by foreign thoughts.

I make sure this happens to all of my friends. I help everyone stay on track by caring for them. We are looking at a fairly quick process on the way to success when the entire group operates this way.

An individual can only succeed if he is the chosen one, a special soul. We are only saved by unity. I do not see any chosen people here. Every person assumes that there is an individual path for him. However, he is absolutely wrong, especially in our time when there is no need for chosen people. On the contrary, today, the masses need to join in the process of correction.

Instructions For Egoism: Don’t Use It

Dr. Michael LaitmanBefore we all come to the lesson, each of us needs to prepare for it. I prepare to place myself under the influence of the environment now. There are great powers, the Creator’s powers, in my friends, and I wish to be under their influence. Only this can change me.

The environment is like a reactor, a great mechanism, a therapeutic section, or a whole hospital. It changes, heals, and forms me in accordance with the first spiritual degree. This is how I should treat it, like emergency help which I need constantly.

I come again and again in order to receive therapy sessions, and gradually I become cured. I hear more and more, agree more and more, and feel more and more. I see how previously nonexistent foundations are revealed in me, and I become more sensitive to the environment as a whole. I begin to feel special phenomena that come from it, different evidence of the presence of the upper force in it.

Gradually, this seeps into my sensations and then into my mind. New impressions become imprinted in my feelings, and changes in them bring me new thoughts which connect and accumulate into understanding. In this manner, I establish a continuously tighter connection to the upper force which is revealed to me.

This is why one needs to build the right attitude to the environment, especially during the studies. This is the most important thing for a person since, thereby, it is as if he comes to the only healing procedure, performs the only action for correction which can be realized in him and help him conquer the spiritual world. A person "conquers" it by changing himself. Therefore, it is written: "A hero is one who conquers his evil inclination," meaning changes it in accordance with the spiritual desire.

It is not in our power to transcend ourselves without inner changes. This only works somewhat in our world, although later we always see that this does not bring any real, permanent benefit. It happens every time, and then it returns as a boomerang of yet another failure in order for us to learn the simple rule: Any use of egoism is to our detriment.

First-Hand Method

Dr. Michael LaitmanKabbalists differ from one another in their degrees of development, their degrees of understanding and attainment. Naturally, this is also related to the types of souls that come down to our world in every generation.

In in his prophecy, Baal HaSulam writes that the Creator said to him: “’Take this sword in your hand….’” Essentially, this sword is a sign that the Creator has given him the power to correct the enormous human disharmony. “’Good things will happen through you, for until now, I had no such faithful man as you….’”

In one of his letters, Baal HaSulam writes that the Ari is a great Kabbalist who has revealed the method of correction to us. We are unable to appreciate their true height. For example, according to Baal HaSulam, Rabbi Akiva was naturally higher than Rashbi. However, Rashbi has revealed more to us than Rabbi Akiva, and he is more valuable in our eyes because we receive more from his instruction.

Likewise, the Ari is also extremely great and important for us. He developed the method of our correction because his soul pertains to the Messiah’s type, the son of Joseph (Mashiach ben Josef). Baal HaSulam writes that since then, there has not been a single person who was able to fully understand the method of the Ari. There have been many sages, but Baal HaSulam was the first one to merit receiving the soul of the Ari.

This does not depend on the person’s strengths, wisdom, or even his efforts in studying. This is activated by the inner purpose evoked by the system of souls, and this is why Baal HaSulam says that he simply merited it, while many others before him did not.

We do not understand this. We only see that one way or another, every person in the world has his own destiny which is referred to as his “luck,” his root. We need to be happy that we have received instruction from a person who was the new incarnation of the soul of the Ari in order to give us the method of correction in modern times.

This is why we use the works of Baal HaSulam. When you prepare for the lesson, it is very important to feel that you are about to study the primary source, the highest and most authentic source.

Even though we do not understand the spiritual world, it sometimes seems to us like someone has gotten lucky in the corporeal world, like someone has gotten ahead by chance. Success takes a lot of strength and effort for some, and fortune seems to be smiling on others.

According to Kabbalah, we understand that this comes from the root of one’s soul. This is why meriting a teacher like Baal HaSulam is a reason for great joy and a basis for assurance. We receive help from a special soul that works as a medium for the Creator to influence us and for us to connect with Him.

In the end, we receive strength from Above through the entire system of corrected souls, and we make sure to pass it on to the uncorrected souls, to every person who has not yet found contact with the force that corrects and fulfills us.

Reveal, Correct, Fulfill

Dr. Michael LaitmanOnly two elements exist in reality: the Creator and the creature. Ultimately, the creature feels the abundance the Creator gives to it. And if the creature changes, it happens because the Creator changes it whether for the best or the worst, in all different forms, depending on subjective sensations.

We give different names to the Creator’s influence upon the creature: “judgment” and “mercy,” “good” and “evil,” according to what is being revealed to us. One way or another, all these definitions do not go beyond good and evil because they are conditioned by our desire to receive pleasure.

There are simply many forms of good and evil since the desire for pleasure consists of different levels. The Light has imprinted different forms in it with its influence. This is why we divide the Creator’s influence into three types:

  • the Light that reveals the vessels;
  • the Light that corrects the vessels;
  • the Light that fulfills the vessels.

This is the order: revelation, correction, fulfillment. This process consists of many stages inherent to every desire and groups of desires that are included in one another. They are all distinguished according to their level of Aviut (coarseness) in depth and power, and their mixing evokes thousands and thousands of responses in us.

For example, a part of my desire is in the stage of revelation, another part is going through correction, and the third part already might be fulfilled. Correlations of desires are so diverse and change so much that we experience a countless amount of reactions and sensations. They form the image of the world where we exist.

In the end, we only perceive the manifestation of the force of desire, broken into many pieces in our perception. Naturally, we are unable to control desires, their groups and combinations, and especially the stages that we experience. This is why in our advancement we only need to strive toward the greatest closeness to the Creator, the property of love and bestowal, toward unity.

We evoke the Light, its strength, and its manifestation through this aspiration. As it approaches us, we go through the stages of revelation, correction, and fulfillment in our desires.
