Under The Parent’s Wing

Dr. Michael LaitmanA spiritual teacher is a system that builds me, puts me on my feet, guides me, and leads me until I reach the goal. It’s like a father and mother caring for a child, without whom the child would not have survived. He exists only thanks to them because he instinctively clings to them and thus gets from them all the necessary care and successfully grows into an adult.

In our world, in this role are the physical father and mother, and in the spiritual world, the system of Aba ve Ima (the upper father and mother), a person’s spiritual teacher, the highest Partzuf.

An Obvious Condition Without Words

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: Why does Baal HaSulam speak only about the need to adhere to books and writers in his articles without mentioning the importance of adhering to the group?

Answer: The importance of adhering to the group isn’t mentioned because it’s a clear and obvious condition. The unity, the connection with others, is the vessel without which it’s practically impossible to start working. Thanks to it you rise above your ego and reach a minimal desire to bestow, from which you continue.

But if you don’t have an environment, which helps you rise out of this hole, from your ego, then there is no one to talk to. It’s about a person, about a discernment in us that rises above the ego, and this is possible only by adhering to the friends. Unless you perform these actions, it’s as if you weren’t born yet, and there’s no one to talk to yet. We aren’t talking about what a person has to do as long as he is a drop of semen and has not yet been born.

It’s about a person who already exists, which means about the discernment within a person that is evoked and that rises above his ego. This is possible only with the help of the environment. To the extent that a person is adhered to the environment, he can exit his ego and rise above it. There is no other force that can pull him out.

Later we can already speak about his other spiritual actions for which the force of the environment is also needed since he himself has no powers. A person is a desire to receive, and there’s nothing we can say about it. It’s only about the part that rose above the ego and is therefore called a friend, a person.

Tuning Ourselves To The “Melody” Of The Seminar

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: It is obvious that in order to prepare for a seminar, one needs to apply internal effort. Exactly, what kind of effort is required? What should we be doing specifically?

Answer: The first 20 articles by Rabash clearly, specifically, and concisely explain this issue. They illustrate what particularly we should talk about while preparing for the seminar: the importance of the group and friends, the importance of revealing the Creator within the group, the role of nullifying oneself before the group, the need for complete inclusion in the group, and the necessity to regard everyone as “one whole” in order to disclose the upper force according to the law of similarity of properties.

All of these conditions create a joint aspiration that we should imagine as one single picture. We should constantly work with this picture, permanently keep it in mind, and try to elucidate all questions through it since this is the place in which we all are united and where our aggregate desire and mind are. If we manage to achieve it, everything else will happen smoothly.

The only problem is how to start thinking in this direction and how to prepare to achieve this state. Maybe, we should write down everything that helps us “tune” ourselves, like tuning a musical instrument. Have you seen how they tune an instrument? First, he takes care of one part of the instrument, then he turns his attention to another. One octave at a time, he plays the note “do” in various octaves, then he tries “mi” He plays and listens to the sounds of the chords. In other words, it is a system to which we have to “tune” ourselves internally.

We have to constantly keep in mind that the system of ten Sefirot, which we are made of, far more complex than any musical instrument. This is a huge, multi-dimensional, multi-leveled system, which includes innumerable sensations that are arranged into one joint structure.

We are not talking about some separate “planes”; all of them ultimately join together. In due course, our efforts will end up creating a spherical picture of the upper world.

Just as today you imagine yourself in the sphere of this world, imagine yourself in the upper world even though it is far more complicated than ours, since it has n-dimensional “space” if “space” can be even used in the context.

People do not realize how much, in principle, they are not prepared for seminars. All they know is that today something will be going on. It has nothing to do with real preparation!

Preparation is when several hours before a seminar; you are “tuning” yourself, searching for a precise way to unite. It is a process of enhancing internal sensations and making a detailed analysis. It’s also about ridding oneself of all interferences and considerations until something “clicks” from within, a sensation of connectedness that we by all means have to preserve and augment.

Question: Is this individual work or does it have a group nature?

Answer: It is individual work. Later on, in the group, at the very beginning of each seminar, everybody should spend a couple of minutes to grasp the idea. However, when one connects with the group, there is a good chance that he will lose the result of his preparatory work. Yet, one should still do one’s work, and only after the work is complete can he become engaged in something else, although it shouldn’t take you as long as 50 minutes (or even longer), as it happened at the last seminar.

Essentially, people were discussing the topics of the seminar mechanically, rather than implementing them internally. They were confused even in words! Strangely enough, even those people who have lots of prior experience and usually are pretty eloquent couldn’t find normal words to scrutinize their internal states through the sensation of unity.

The Debtors

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: Will the division into internal and external parts, between “Israel” and the “nations of the world” be kept when the whole world reaches the end of correction?

Answer: No. The letters of the Hebrew word “Israel” stand for Li Rosh (I have a head). This is the order of the general correction—the one who is evoked and is given a special desire is called “Israel,” and he must take care of the whole world serving as the link between the Creator and the created beings. It isn’t an ordinary desire since the “point in the heart” manages it by the connection with the Creator. The attribute of bestowal was inserted into this desire, the posterior of Nefesh of Holiness. This is the meaning of the “Israel,” Yashar – El (straight to the Creator). It isn’t about certain people, but rather about a special type of desire that is connected to the Creator since it has the discernment of what bestowal is. Although it is concealed and shattered, it still exists.

How can the desires in which this spark, this discernment of bestowal, doesn’t exist be corrected? It is possible if they add Israel as their “head;” if the two parts connect and work together.

The whole world is the essence of the desire to receive that must be corrected. But it can only do it through connection with another desire in which there is a spark of bestowal. Therefore the “nations of the world” are not required to correct themselves. On the other hand, they feel sorrow and pain since “Israel” doesn’t correct them.

This is where the hatred that the world feels towards Israel stems from. Of course, no one perceives it, but subconsciously, according to their nature, these people feel it and express their claims openly.

The correction is the role of those who belong to “Israel.” They have to correct their attitude towards the nations of the world as soon as possible. Actually, there is nothing to correct in “Israel” themselves, except for the part of the “nations of the world” in them. If “Israel” process these desires in them correctly, they will understand how to treat others. Speaking in Kabbalistic terms AHP de Bina explains to Bina how it should treat ZON.

Thus we must first correct “the nations of the world” in us, our external part, which will allow us to connect with the internal part of the world. This is the order of correction. It is our duty, and if we don’t make efforts to carry it out as soon as possible, troubles are soon to come. The time has come, and the nations of the world will begin to pressure us since the mutual inclusion that was created as a result of the exile allows them to feel that Israel owe them.

It says: “Why was it called Mt. Sinai? Since the hatred of the nations of the world descended from it.” “Since Israel received the method of correction. So where do all our troubles come from? From Israel, since they do not fulfill what they have received.” The Torah, the method, obliges us immediately, while the upper force manages the nations of the world, and so their hate is justified.

But we are advancing “against the current,” hoping that the troubles will go away by themselves without correction on our part. It’s nonsense. After all, we are dealing with the force that evokes the correction. We mustn’t even ask or pray that the hatred that nations of the world feel towards us will disappear from the world; we should only exert ourselves so that it will be corrected. Here too, it isn’t because it’s an unpleasant phenomenon, but on the contrary, we have to be thankful for it since it evokes us to turn to the Creator.

So it’s an oxymoron.

The King’s Clothing

Dr. Michael LaitmanFrom Rabash’s lesson: When a person is naked, he feels a deficiency, and that’s why clothing for him is like filling that covers his deficiency. In spirituality too, an empty desire feels that it is deficient. When the Light comes and fills it, it is like clothing.

Clothing is the level of compatibility of the desire to the Light. The clothing can be inanimate, vegetative, animate, or different human characters—all this is the clothing a person has, which determines which attributes of the Light the desire can adopt by dressing in it in order to resemble the Light.

Our main work is to yearn to become a clothing on the upper one, to receive a form that is the most compatible with the Creator. We should constantly prepare ourselves to take on a new form. Everything is determined by the clothing because the desire itself has no form. It depends on the clothing, whether a person will be a beast or a human who resembles the Creator; it is one of the two.

On the way we should constantly see ourselves in a state of free will, half guilty and half innocent according to the clothing, according to the form I am inclined to. In order to do that I have the group, the teacher, and the books, which can attune me to a clothing, a form that is as similar to the Creator as possible.

The Forefathers As The Architects Of Correction

Dr. Michael LaitmanBaal HaSulam, “The Arvut (Mutual Guarantee)”: Therefore, the Creator did not find a nation or a tongue qualified to receive the Torah, except for the children of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, whose ancestral merit reflected upon them.

The forefathers represent the three lines that the desire to receive acquires and that enable it to correct itself, attain the goal, and become similar to the Light. We have to constantly use the same method that the three lines, the three attributes of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, founded at the beginning.

As our sages said, ‘The Patriarchs observed the whole Torah even before it was given.”

The three lines are even in the KHB phase, in the “first third of correction,” even when there is no need for them. They actually are realized in the HGT phase and even more so in NHY, which means in the other two thirds. Today, it is time for the final phase of the correction (NHY), when the external desire to receive is fulfilled.

On the whole, the forefathers symbolize the period that preceded our days. Now, it is the sons’ turn, which is us. We must correct the three lines by ourselves. All the rest of the world is NHY, and it will be corrected through our work on them.

According to the wisdom of Kabbalah, these phases are defined as two thousand years for each phase, but on the whole, we shouldn’t count years, but rather degrees. NHY cannot correct themselves. However, when the sons (HGT) are connected to the forefathers (HBD), then they also can correct the nations of the world.

This means that because of the exaltedness of their souls, they had the ability to attain all the ways of the Creator with respect to the spirituality of the Torah, which stems from their Dvekut, without first needing the ladder of the practical part of the Torah, which they had no possibility of observing at all.

The level of the forefathers includes all three parts: HBD, HGT, and NHY. The forefathers also went through the same processes that take place on the next levels. Therefore, we can discover the entire process until the end of correction, the whole method, by the ten Sefirot of HBD.

The forefathers cannot fulfill it in practice yet, but then can potentially plan and arrange the future system. Thanks to their spiritual height, they could prepare the ground for the work of the sons, although not in practice, but in potential, and it already included all the deficiencies and the vessels that are later used in the method that they discovered.

On the whole, the forefathers is the upper system that is fulfilled that way in the small desire at the dawn of its correction.

The End of Growing Pains

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: What do you envision the ideal state in the groups to be like? What do we need to come to?

Answer: Growing pains will continue. There is no way to avoid this until the groups acquire their spiritual foundation.

Once there will be a foundation under every group, a “spiritual pillow” that they will perceive in its constant form, understanding and feeling their spiritual skeleton, their ten Sefirot, which are the basis of them, and within them perceive the higher state, the upper world, the governance, and adaptation, then it will be possible to say that they exist independently, they understand there are no imbalances, and together they participate in one common connection, one common system.

Otherwise, what kind of a common system is this? Everyone only understands himself in accordance with his own egoism. This is why these growing pains will only go away once we reach the spiritual level, and I hope that this will happen very soon. .

Happy Childhood In The Shadow Of The Creator

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: What does it mean to work above reason?

Answer: Work above reason means bestowal. That is, I want to take the form of a giver, like the Creator, to become a loving person, to leave my ego and make use of myself for the good of my neighbor, to unite with others in order to exit myself. It means that I appreciate bestowal more than my own qualities of reception.

First of all, I want to break free from the power of my selfish desires and to rise above it. It means escaping from “Egyptian slavery” and reaching the quality of Bina above Malchut. When I become free and rise above my ego, which can no longer grab my legs and drag me back, now I even can begin working with this desire within it.

The stages of embryo (Ibur) and feeding (Yenika) is a rise above my desire to enjoy, but the stage of adulthood is working within this desire. Work on the desire to enjoy is in fear, in bestowing in order to bestow (Hafetz Hesed), in the properties of Bina, by becoming included into the Creator, staying in His shadow like a baby clinging to his mother and fully entrusting himself to her and thus receiving the power to rise above his ego.

Then, when the child grows up, he can get in touch with his egoism and begin working with it. This is called a return to love.

Spiritual Biography

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: How do I know if I dig deeply enough into the depth of my desires?

Answer: While getting deeper into my desires at their zero level (Behina Shoresh), I’m at the stage of an embryo. I just touch the point of each of my 620 desires because I wouldn’t be able to build the form of an embryo without that. An embryo must go through all stages of development: still, vegetative, animate, and speaking in this thinnest, zero level of desire, and thus my embryo will grow to the point when it gets born.

Even in corporeal nature, we see that an embryo goes through different stages of its development preceding the speaking form: still, vegetative, and animate to the point when it becomes developed into a human and then gets born.

And having been born, he again contains all the stages: inanimate, vegetative, animate, and human, but at a new stage, at the 1st level of desire. Then he begins to learn from the higher wisdom by taking over His form, but only by clinging to Him, sleeping in His arms.

Thus he grows until he becomes an adult capable of working independently with his desire. It means that he gets married, receives Nukva (a desire that needs fulfillment), and penetrates even more deeply into his desires and gives them new forms of bestowal. And that means bearing sons.

A Matryoshka Put Together On The Inside

Dr. Michael LaitmanBaal HaSualm, “The Arvut (Mutual Guarantee)”: Therefore, the Tana described the Arvut as two people on a boat, when one of them began to drill a hole in the boat. His friend asked, “Why are you drilling?” He replied, “What business is it of yours? I am drilling under me, not under you.” So he replied, “Fool! We will both drown together!”

From this we learn that since those rebels wallow in self-love, by their actions they build an iron wall that prevents the observers of the Torah from even beginning to fully keep the Torah and Mitzvot in the measure of “Love thy friend as thyself,” which is the ladder for reaching Dvekut (adhesion) with Him. And how right were the words of the proverb that said, “Fool, we shall both drown together!”

This is a very clear example: No matter where the hole is, in any case, I eventually drown and as a result everyone dies. This is why we should worry about all the participants, and this concern should first be revealed internally, inside me, when I worry about my own desires, and also outwards when I worry about the group and the world.

A person is a small world. Eventually my inner structure connects with the structure of the group and the structure of the whole world. So it turns out that if I could keep the right, accurate, basic form of my vessels, the corrected and the uncorrected ones, I could keep the external vessels of the group and of the whole world. This is called “judges himself and the whole world to the scale of merit.”

We can bring the example of a Matryoshka (a set of nesting dolls): I am inside, then there is the group, and then the whole world. And all of this is only in my imagination—my ego is divided into “layers” from the internal layer to the external layer. Actually, however, it is about one structure, one system. Therefore, I am responsible for everyone. If I carefully guard myself, I guard the whole world by that.

Thus the correction is carried out internally. Of course I should also worry about the external part, but the real work is done inside me. Therefore by growing stronger internally, we radiate the power upon our groups and upon the whole world.
