US And China Facing Showdown On Free Trade

In the News (fromThe Guardian): “China and US head for trade war” With oil prices rising rapidly, western governments including Britain have become concerned that higher commodity costs could choke off the fragile economic recovery, and they suspect China of deliberately stockpiling materials – in contravention of WTO [World Trade Organization] rules on free trade …

The US, with Europe, announced that it would start formal “dispute resolution consultations” at the WTO in Geneva … Taking China to the WTO marks a sharp deterioration in relations between the world’s largest trading powers. Sources in Geneva said: “In terms of trade disputes, it doesn’t get bigger than this.”

My Comment: If they don’t come to an agreement, then the cannons will start speaking as they have done in the past.

Will Governments Have To Print More Money To Repay Their Debts?

In the News (from The Big Money): “A Stimulus Won’t Save Us Now” The World Bank report confirms what some had already feared—there is “little hope that the [developing world] countries will provide the spark for the global economic engine,”… Reuters quotes the World Bank report as saying that “the prospects for the global economy remain ‘unusually uncertain.’…”There is a moment where you can’t spend anymore and you can’t accumulate any more debt. I think we are at that moment,” European Central Bank President Jean-Claude Trichet said on Sunday, warning that governments will have to now start paying down the massive deficits they’ve created rather than look to stimulus spending.

My Comment: But how can we pay down the debts without relying on the printing press?  We are at an impasse!

Today Is Actually “The Calm Before The Real Storm”

In the News (from Prlog Organization): “The Great Depression Ahead: An Interview with Harry S. Dent” Author Harry S. Dent, Jr. having successfully predicted the crash of Fall 2008 years ago, was also the author of The Great Boom Ahead, published in 1992, when he stood virtually alone in forecasting the unanticipated boom of the 1990s. And now he is saying that the party is over…

Among the predictions being made here is that we are at the end of an historic boom cycle, and so while the economy may appear to recover from the subprime crisis and “minor recession” by mid to late 2009, (given Obama’s deficit spending to aid infrastructure and create jobs), it is actually “the calm before the real storm.”

My Comment: Any analysis that takes into account our interaction with Nature per se supports predictions of deeper crises, or even the end of days. There is the possibility, however, of avoiding the path of suffering by choosing the path of recognition of evil of our ego and its correction by an external force.

All our methods, after all, view change as something we can do on our own. But our own forces are egoistical and can’t alter our condition.

However, if we decide that the needed correction is possible only with the help of an external force, then Kabbalah can help us understand, how to activate it. Then the solution will come.

Consequences Of Playing With The Financial Bubble

In the News (from The New York Times): “Joblessness Hits 9.5%, Deflating Recovery Hopes” – The American economy lost 467,000 more jobs in June, and the unemployment rate edged up to 9.5 percent in a sobering indication that the longest recession since the 1930s had yet to release its hold. The numbers are indicative of a continued, very severe recession. There’s nothing in here to show that the economy and the market are pulling out of the grip of recession.
My Comment: No one in the world wants to hear a voice of common sense about the continuation of the crisis, about the necessity of changing of public relationships for its resolution and about a new phase in development of social relationships. It is because money flows through people whose wealth depends only on the development of financial bubbles. Thus, until the world reaches the point of collapse, they will not stop their game.

Crisis Management According To The “Experts”

laitman_2009-05-27_8144_wIn the News (The New York Review of Books): “The Crisis and How to Deal with It”

Following are excerpts from a symposium on the economic crisis presented by The New York Review of Books and PEN World Voices at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on April 30. The participants were former senator Bill Bradley, Niall Ferguson, Paul Krugman, Nouriel Roubini, George Soros, and Robin Wells, with Jeff Madrick as moderator.

Jeff Madrick: “We have a three-front problem: a housing market that went crazy as the housing bubble burst; a credit crisis, the most severe we’ve known since the early 1930s; and now a sharp drop in demand for goods and services and capital investment, leading to a severe recession.”

Bill Bradley: “The national government has now made about $12.7 trillion in guarantees and commitments to the US financial sector, and we’ve already spent a little over $4 trillion in this crisis… If we look out to June, July, and if we see that the PPIP [Public-Private Investment Program, created by Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner] is not succeeding, that the bank assets aren’t being bought at levels that they should be bought from the books of banks.”

Neal Ferguson: “This is the end of the age of leverage, which began, I guess, in the late 1970s, and saw an explosive rise in the ratio of debt to gross domestic product, not only in this country, but in many, many other countries… This is a crisis of the global economy. I’d go so far as to say it’s a crisis of globalization itself.”

Paul Krugman: “US households have seen their net worth decline abruptly by $13 trillion, and there are similar blows occurring around the world. So the people, individual households, want to save again… This causes a problem… If we ask the question “Where will the savings come from to finance the large US government deficits?,” the answer is “From ourselves.”

The Chinese are not contributing at all… Things are getting worse more slowly, but we have not managed to head off a crisis that could turn out to be self-reinforcing, and leave us in this trap for many, many years.”

Nouriel Roubini: It’s pretty clear by now that this is the worst financial crisis, economic crisis and recession since the Great Depression… But we’re still contracting at a pretty fast rate… The outlook for Europe and Japan, both this year and next year, is even worse…

The lesson of the Great Depression is quite clear: it began with the collapse of the stock market in 1929, and we ended it with World War Two. Therefore, war is a consequence of failing to take necessary measures within a required time frame.

Politicians are of the opinion that self-regulation is the way to go, which means that there’s no regulation whatsoever. The entire model of self-regulation and market discipline has gone down in flames.”

George Soros: There are two features that I think deserve to be pointed out. One is that the financial system as we know it actually collapsed… At the same time, the financial shock had a tremendous effect on the real economy, and the real economy went into a free fall, and that was global…

Markets were seen basically as self-correcting. That paradigm has proven to be false… When people see this crisis as being the same as previous financial crises, they’re making a mistake… The interesting thing is that what needs to be done in the short term is almost exactly the opposite of what needs to be done in the long term. Obviously the problem was excessive leverage.”

Robin Wells: In many ways we’re almost adverse to bringing up the situation in which we find ourselves with the net exporting countries… So I think we’re going to have to address these chronic global trade imbalances. You might very well see a shift toward more protectionism.”

Economists Are Not Ready To Work With Us On A New Economic Model

A question I received: I have watched a few of your TV conferences with economists. First half of a discussion is always quite good, but after this I find myself waiting for you to start finally discussing a joint plan of mutual work.

I expect your proposal: “You work on the economy of the future society, and I work on grounding it ideologically. Let’s try to build a functioning model of future society.”

Why don’t you end your discussions with such a proposal?

My Answer: It’s because as soon as I state that I consider the main, necessary condition for improvement in the economy to be to educate people in order to change them, that all changes are secondary and a consequence of education, my guest will lose interest in me. It’s because what I say means that no economic measures will yield positive results, and that therefore, his part disappears from our work.

An economist has to come to understand that his work is to develop a new economic model of society: a dynamic economy constantly developing in response to the changes of a new (communistic) social consciousness (the economy of public relations). They are not prepared for this as yet.

The Growing Monopoly Of The Banking Industry

In the News (from Project Syndicate): “America’s Socialism for the Rich” With all the talk of “green shoots” of economic recovery, America’s banks are pushing back on efforts to regulate them. The old system worked well for the bankers (if not for their shareholders), so why should they embrace change? Indeed, the efforts to rescue them devoted so little thought to the kind of post-crisis financial system we want that we will end up with a banking system that is less competitive, with the large banks that were too big to fail even larger.

My Comment: The system will become even worse because it has to serve ever-growing egoism. Banks will become larger, their monopoly will exploit the ordinary client and the government will not be able to dictate its conditions to them. As a result, conflicts will be on the rise!

The Realization That Suffering Is The Cleansing Force Of The Crisis

laitman_2009-05-xx_ny_6618In the News (from The Financial News): “Interview of Dmitry Medvedev American CNBC TV channel” Now, one problem arising at one place in one country, be that in America, Europe or Asia, is enough for the whole world community, for the whole global economy to catch fire. That is why, a very important conclusion that we should make and take as a basic one is that taking all kinds of domestic national economy decisions concerning inflation, issue of money and some other economic indicators, we are making a direct impact on other economies. This economic globalism is, maybe, the main lesson of the current crisis, which, at the same time, creates better conditions for development in the future, because we can create a much fairer financial and economic architecture.

My comment: See how suffering is helping us! It is well known that suffering cleanses. The correct interpretation of this is that suffering cleanses a person of egoism. This cleansing consists of two phases. Phase one is through the influence of Upper forces. The second phase is the realization that egoism is the cause of all evil followed by a conscious separation from it (from its use).

The All-Consuming Crisis!

In the News (translated from MIGnews): “Fixation on Crisis” – Recently all events are being considered in connection with the crisis. It feels like the crisis became a basis of our life. In other countries, such as Russia, people try not to talk much about the crisis. Certainly, no one is calling for introducing censorship of crisis related content, but it looks like the entire world has become fixated on the crisis.

By the way, Americans have a so-called “theory of positive thinking.” It states that without positive thoughts you cannot advance and will surely not get out of any crisis, whether it’s personal, national, or global.

My Comment: The matter is not in the crisis itself, but in humanity’s state of becoming totally interconnected. Therefore, until we bring our interconnection to equivalence with the qualities of Nature, which are mutual and kind, our condition will continue to worsen. Moreover, it is impossible to convert egoism to altruism with the forces of our world! Only the force that created egoism is able to change it. This force is drawn upon us through the study of Kabbalah because Kabbalah studies this force’s properties and how to draw its influence upon a person.

Let’s Stop Wandering Around With Our Eyes Closed

A question I received: How can people grasp the connection between the unfolding crisis and the solution, which is Kabbalah? It may take a lot of tragedies for them to understand.

My Answer: We are trying to shorten their path. It all depends on us, and Baal HaSulam writes that mass circulation of Kabbalah is called the “Messiah’s Horn“. The emerging desires will lead humanity through thick and thin and will go through myriads of states in search of the answer, including Nazi regimes and wars. People still want to cover up the crisis, wishing to make it “disappear.” Humanity, like a small child, closes its eyes and says: “I see no trouble, it doesn’t exist.” It’s our first natural reaction.

The suffering will intensify as we see the decline in industrial growth and the freezing of assets by financial institutions. Prior to that time, we have to spread the wisdom of Kabbalah everywhere to prevent humanity from stepping onto the path that surely leads into an abyss – and only after that, towards the goal.
