When a person begins studying Kabbalah, they literally thirst for spirituality. Everything else seems completely insignificant and unworthy of attention. A person feels that they have found the precious thing they have been searching for all their life.

So, what happens now, when one begins engaging in Kabbalah? After six months of study, we see that this was not the only thing he wanted throughout his life; there is something else that he very, very much desires, and now this becomes clear.

Why does this happen? Because the desire to receive grows. The person begins to be shown all kinds of temptations; he is “teased” with all sorts of lures and attempts are made to attract him through various corporeal pleasures. Now he enjoys all of this much more than he did in the past. This happens during descents, not ascents, because it is necessary to enlarge his point in the heart until it becomes a Kli (vessel) the size of ten Sefirot.

This is the path. We study that the light gives birth to and builds the Kli. The same thing happens here. The surrounding light acting upon the point in the heart builds a Kli out of it, until it expands to ten Sefirot. The person’s work is to be an observer of everything the light does with them, agree with it, correctly sense this work, build the appropriate attitude toward such concepts as “sin” and “commandment,” and not be frightened by the constant feeling of distancing that arises.

Gradually, one acquires other definitions of what sin, transgression, and intention to bestow upon the Creator mean. Now one attaches less importance to transgressions on the corporeal level and looks more at what brings them into connection with the Creator.

Therefore, one rejoices that uncorrected Kelim are awakening and rising within them, and one regards this as an opportunity to correct them, or at least to know them more deeply. This is a sign that the person is becoming stronger and greater.

Each time a person falls, they should be grateful that they have been rewarded with the Creator revealing another uncorrected Kli in their soul. And this means that, apparently, one earned it through their previous work.

Baal HaSulam writes that if a person’s Kli has not yet been revealed to the person, who knows when it will happen? But if it has already been revealed, it is a sign that in one’s present incarnation, i.e., in one’s current state, before the next cycle of ascent and descent, they will correct this Kli.

Therefore, it is necessary to rejoice in the “sinners” that are being revealed and strive, through study, to quickly identify the evil within them—the flaws and unfulfilled desires that separate us from the goal—and relate to them in such a way that allows them to serve the purpose of advanving toward the goal.
