On The Purpose Of Creation, Part 19

Dr. Michael LaitmanDear Friends, please ask questions about these passages from the great Kabbalists. I promise to answer them. Commentaries in brackets are mine.

Why Is The Creator Concealed From Man?

Everything is prepared beforehand [created in its perfect state] and each soul already exists in its entire light, abundance, and eternity. Only because of “shame” [in order not to feel humiliation because of undeserved reception] the soul came out of it [the initially created state of complete fulfillment by eternal pleasure] by the way of restrictions [increasingly greater concealments of this state] until it clothed in a filthy [concealing reception completely] body [egoistic desire].

Only [yet specifically] thanks to it, the soul returns to its source where it existed before the restriction along with the reward from the horrible path that she had traveled. All in all, the reward is complete adhesion. In other words, the soul gets rid of “shame” [undeserved reception] since its vessel of reception [egoistic desires] turn into the vessel of bestowal [altruistic desires], and it becomes similar to the Creator in its properties. [And hence is able to feel the entire Light that initially filled it.]

From The Garden Of Eden And Back Again

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Creator created the will to receive as “existence from absence” and developed it through 4 phases by exposure to the Direct Light. When the will to receive arrived at the last phase of development and had become as great as the Light filling it, the Light had passed along all of its properties to the will to receive. Then in the very last layer (Dalet de-Dalet, the 4th part of the 4th phase), the creature discerned itself as receiving.

This aroused burning shame in the creature for it saw to what extent it was opposite to the Creator, the Bestowing One. As a result, it restricted itself and refused to receive. This horrific sensation of shame is called “the shining of Malchut.” It is the darkness which is impossible to bear, the “void” where no Light can shine. At this last point, the 4th part of the 4th phase, the restriction (Tzimtzum) occurs. All the previous phases can achieve similarity with the Light for they are not completely opposite to it.

The question is what to do with this fourth part? It cannot be canceled out or discarded because in doing so the creature would cease to exist. The creature that is not “plugged into” the Creator and is opposite to Him in its properties cannot exist. The 4th phase, the point of independence, must be preserved within the creature as its foundation. In fact, it if were not for the shame, the creature (the guest) would become fully subordinate to the Creator (Host) and would do whatever the Creator wished him to do just as it happens on the still, vegetative, and animate levels of nature, just like a pet is loyal to its owner.

So when does the creature become a “guest”? When does that person feel himself as foreign and opposite to the host? And when does he feel as a guest that the host is happy and excited to have as a guest and that the host is constantly asking what else to offer him in order to please him? When does the guest hear the host saying: “Help yourself! It’s all yours!” And when does the guest reply, “Not mine but Yours!”? The guest cannot help but feel this shame in phase “Dalet de-Dalet”; the creature must keep the sensation of shame in order to preserve itself as a creature.

So, if we reside in the Garden of Eden, meaning in pure bestowal (Bina), it is still the level of angels but not that of true humans. Until we come to sense this gaping void that cannot be filled, man is not ready for his mission. The void cannot be filled until all the shame is revealed which makes us feel the need to cover ourselves with “garments,” which means we feel the need for correction.

Hence, in order to assist the “man,” a “woman” derives and detaches from him. This is his “wife” (Nukva) who is “made from his rib.” It is she who imparts this void to him and together, they, (Zeir Anpin and Malchut, Adam and Eve, feel the need for “garments” (the Reflected Light, the intention to bestow). They feel like the guest in relation to the Host. In this way they can achieve correction, meaning they act solely in order to bestow to the Host and to turn shame into dignity and honor.

This path is long and complicated. Everybody knows the story of Adam and Eve, although nobody understands what it conceals.

The System Of The Future, Part 3

Dr. Michael LaitmanA question I received: There are Internet systems where one comes to download the information they need. Maybe that is how we should attract people’s attention to the method of correction?

My Answer: Let’s say a person visits our site and downloads the information. Then what? We want him to visit the site for the sake of communication! Of course, we can display a certain pool of information about the necessity to communicate with each other. But then what will happen? Suppose we provided our user with additional information about what we learn at the lessons. What’s next?

What is the best way of providing people with information about Kabbalah? We have to involve them in the system and offer them an example of, the need for, and the possibility of communication. People should see that our way of solving worldly problems is all about making the right connections between us. We have to show our users that we trigger confidence, safety, and love into our lives; they have to see the way we advance and find new properties within ourselves that further allow our perception to rise to a new dimension, up to the level of sensing the Creator.

Where else can these properties be found? They are found only within the right communication among us.

Kabbalah Moments: Asking For A Friend

Play In Order To Develop

A question I received: Is playing the best way to develop?

My Answer: Yes, a game is the best way to develop. It is the foundation of progress in nature. We think of a game as something plain and simple. But, a game, in fact, is the most serious thing in the world.

When we stop playing, we stop developing. We evolve only through playing. When we play, we don’t realize what we are doing and as a result we expand our feelings and abilities. Later on, when we stop playing and start learning, we are only fulfilling the possibilities we have created with the help of games.

This is what turns a good game into the foundation of a human being. His gradual development from one level to another, in accordance with the law of “negation of negation,” and the ascent from a state of the lower one to that of the Upper One, is possible only through a game.

When playing, a person doesn’t realize what his next step will look like since he isn’t there yet, but he strives toward it, models it, and “tries it on” in various ways. This element is called “a game.” It is about uncertainty, unpredictability, intuitive attempts to figure out how, and acting like a child. This is what growth is about.

When we stop inquiring how and we begin to study what is already opened, prepared, and processed for us, this unique state of mind  (the inquiring “how?”) disappears, and we stop progressing. We simply fill our brain cells with information that stops our development. We turn into “nerds.” With respect to elevating to a new dimension and ascending to our next level, naturally, the only way to climb this ladder is by "playing a game.”

People are well aware of this. Here is an example: during my doctorate exams, one of the examiners asked me to describe the elements of game in the development of nature and human beings. They also asked me to answer this question from the perspective of Kabbalah. So I had to present the whole system to them. (They accepted it, but gave me a “B.” I got a “B” in my major, in Kabbalah!)  Why do I mention this here? It is just as an illustration of how commonplace the acceptance of play and gaming are today.

The Beginning Is Concealed From Us

Dr. Michael LaitmanA question I received: Our actions are unrewarded and the prayer of the society is beyond human ability. You need energy just to ask for this. So where do we start? Where will we get the energy to carry out these actions, which are beyond our nature?

My Answer: We can understand this through the example of man’s development. He emerges as a result of mutual actions of the father and mother, then goes through lengthy development in the mother’s womb, and is born. His own forces start to surface in him, but of course this happens unconsciously. Even though we see that he reacts, it is clear that he is not doing it himself, but on account of the forces that are accumulating in him. They are causing the reaction.

But at some point in time, we start to see a personality in this being. Of course, we can say that the forces of nature are evoking his reactions, as well as his personality, behavior, likes and dislikes. However, these qualities have accumulated in him in a specific combination and have taken on a personal form.

Where does one’s independence start to come through? Is it in the prayer or plea for oneself or for others? The Upper Light is the only force that acts upon us. It influences us without our awareness just like nature influences an embryo or a child. On our part, we try to evoke a greater influence from the Light, and thus accelerate our development. Therefore, we should simply make efforts. This is the only thing required of us.

The Speaking Heart

Dr. Michael LaitmanA prayer, a plea for correction, is the most natural desire, but the problem is that our heart does not want what is needed. Our desires are corrupted, and so we read articles by Kabbalists to learn what request we should form in our hearts.

First, we need to correct our desires. When a sensation of the Creator is revealed in the very first, minor, corrected desire, we will know exactly what we should ask for in order to draw increasingly closer to Him. For this reason, the sages of the Great Assembly (Anshei Knesset HaGedolah), all of which were great Kabbalists, wrote a prayer book for us so that everyone could at least read about what a corrected heart should ask for. When we open a prayer book, we need to remember that we are reading about the very elevated states which we need to achieve.

Along with the prayer book, we need a wise mentor who will teach us how to make our heart desire what the prayer talks about. After all, the point is not just to repeat the written words, but to reach a sensation deep in our hearts. A person’s heart should utter all the words of the prayer.

We Can Change The Whole Universe!

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Zohar, Chapter “Lech Lecha (Go Forth),” Item 4: The two lines that were moist and mingled with one another have not been frozen by the middle line, which is Tifferet, and will no longer mingle with one another.

Only two lines descend to us from Above. Our job is to realize the Reshimot (informational records) that manifest in us and construct the middle line for them. The two lines – the left and the right, the property of mercy (Rachamim) and that of judgment (Din), bestowal and receiving – influence the Reshimot.

Both of them impact me and my Reshimo. My task is to realize both forces in an optimal way by using the Reshimo. This is what is called the middle or third line. My job is to use both forces that I receive from the Creator in the proper way within myself.

How do I recognize these forces? How do I find ways to connect them together? In any state, along the entire ascent until achieving complete correction, I have Reshimot that must be realized. My next state is already given to me; I don’t have to search for it. All I have to do is learn how to connect both forces together and how to organize my next state in the most optimal way in order to become similar with the Upper One at every given moment.

The Creator shaped both forces that come to me from Above. My job is to build a form from myself that is similar to Him with the help of these two forces and Reshimot. I have all the instruments handy: the engine (Reshimot) and “plus” and “minus” (the two lines). I only have to know for which purpose I “ignite” the system.

All the tools are already available to me. I only have to add my own effort. Yet my work has to be applied not towards the construction of my new state, but rather to the realization of what I do and why I do it. By acting this way, I become similar to the Creator.

Often times we think that we have to correct or build the whole world. But in fact, all we are required to do is to concentrate on a very easy task. Even though our work is extremely simple, it actually changes the entire reality.
