Our problem is that we consider our states good or bad and measure ascents and descents by our mood, physical well-being, and how energetic we are in our work. This has nothing to do with the true state.

The intention for the sake of bestowal or reception, its sharpness and clarity, awareness of the evil contained in it, and the ability or inability to perform good are not measured by our sensations but by the intention itself, by how deeply we clarify it. According to this, we can measure our advancement.

Perhaps, in one’s clarifications, a person reveals that he is entirely in the state of receiving for himself, that there is nothing in him for the sake of bestowal, and that he is therefore far from the Creator. In this, he is indeed far from the Creator, but he is close to Him in that he is advancing in clarifying the intention and in the process of correction.

Therefore, our sensation determines nothing on the ladder of degrees by which we ascend, because this must be considered only according to the depth of the clarification of the intention. How good or bad a person’s sensations are during these clarifications does not matter; the deeper they are, the more he advances.

Therefore, we should strive only to renew our intention—that is, constantly examine what our attitude toward the Creator is. We must constantly examine this mutual connection, this system of relationships, and deepen it as much as possible.
