Sensing The Invisible Network

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: What should we think about all together, the entire world group, when we hold a Unity Day? How can we unite?

Answer: Every person has to delve into himself and there to feel the chain that connects him with others, the inner net that exists between us. Moreover, a person can be in this world or he might no longer be in it because this is a network between desires, between the souls and not the physical bodies.

Baal HaSulam and all the great Kabbalists of the past millennia are here, in this connection. They are all together with us, embedded in our common net. There are millions of us today, but in reality, there are many more because all of these souls throughout all of human history are together with us, amounting to hundreds of millions of souls. And all together they are a tremendous spiritual force.

If we wish to unite together in this net, then naturally not only will we influence each other and become part of this net so every person will acquire it for his own spiritual ascent, but we will simultaneously influence all the people in the world, who are tuned into this net involuntarily, without sensing it. We will start to awaken them.

Therefore, let’s start by reaching an agreement among us that we desire to clearly feel our common connection.

Serving The World

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: How should the nation of Israel living on the material level of this world participate in the general correction?

Answer: Together with correcting the spiritual Israel, we have to correct its material “hypostasis.” It is the result of the reincarnation of the souls of Israel, whereas the spiritual Israel is all those who have a point in the heart, a spiritual aspiration by which they join the process.

The difference between them lies in what they are drawn to: a person with a point in the heart is drawn to spirituality, whereas a person who does not have this point is not. Still, if a person without a point in the heart belongs to the nation of Israel (Yashar Kel, meaning those aimed straight to the Creator), then he is obligated to work on correction.

True, there is a principle stating that there is no coercion on the spiritual path. But nevertheless, this obligation is incumbent on Israel. The Torah says, “You will be a kingdom of priests and a holy nation for Me.” And the time has come.

Of course, the responsibility of those members of Israel who have a point in the heart is different from the responsibility of those who do not have this point, who have not been awakened yet. However, this obligation is incumbent on everyone, and the external pressure of AHP, the nations of the world, is aimed precisely at making Galgalta ve Eynaim correct themselves. This pressure will only keep growing. The more we fall behind, the more AHP wants because egoism constantly grows and becomes more and more empty. That is why the pressure on Galgalta ve Eynaim will become stronger. That is how the nations indirectly incite Israel to accelerate its correction.

Therefore, people with a point in the heart, meaning the spiritual Israel, and just the Jews, the material Israel, have to actualize the correction upon themselves and attract the Light for AHP. You can’t do anything to change this fact because we are talking about a single vessel whose parts are interconnected in this way.

Question: Does this mean that two processes have to occur simultaneously?

Answer: I don’t see two processes occurring here. At the end of the “Introduction to The Book of Zohar,” Baal HaSulam writes about two parts of Israel: the internal and the external. The inner part are “the workers of the Creator,” those who desire to serve Him. They also divide into two parts: the inner part, those who wish to attain the intention for the sake of bestowal, and the external part, which makes material actions. Besides them, Israel also includes people who don’t know anything and aren’t interested in anything.

Similarly, the nations of the world also include two parts. The inner part wants to join us and belongs to Israel, even though it is called “Israel in the nations of the world.” And the external part is indifferent to this and feels only the troubles of this world. But we also have to awaken these people, so they will at least avoid making great mistakes in the future and will save themselves from annihilation and grave problems. That is how they join us.

In the end, correction is intended precisely for this external part—AHP. They are the goal of creation. The top priority is the will to enjoy, while Israel is not the goal of creation, but just its correction.

This is what our entire work has to be aimed at: correcting ourselves in order to bring correction to the world. This is the meaning of “a kingdom of priests.” We are servants, we serve the world.

The Faces of The Beloved

Dr. Michael LaitmanAccording to our nature, the character of our actions, we are receivers. However, the more you receive for the sake of bestowal, the higher you are as a giver. The action itself does not change, only your intention does. That is what turns you into a giver instead of a receiver.

Does the Creator feel it? It is possible to say that nothing changes for the Giver, but only for a human being. There is nothing to be added to perfection. All His responses and impressions are actually manifested in you, in the image of the Creator that you have formed.

Thanks to this, you can bring yourself to equivalence with Him: It seems to you that changes take place in Him, that you give Him more or less pleasure. You suffer or enjoy because of Him, relative to how much He suffers of enjoys because of you, and so on.

All these relationships unfold in the creature only to elevate it to the degree of the Creator, meaning to supplement the creature with perfection that comes from the property of bestowal. It turns out that the Creator plays with the creature just to educate it.

Similarly, we show children various faces: We laugh with them, become serious, and express anger. Everything is for the sake of education, in order to show a child as many nuances as possible and thereby teach him how to work correctly with himself and the environment. And in fact, nothing but love motivates us.

In his “Preface to The Book of Zohar,” Item 33, Baal HaSulam writes about this: “The truth is that there is a Godly will here that these similitudes, which operate only in the souls of the receivers, will appear to the souls as He Himself participates in them to greatly increase the attainment of the souls.

It is like a father who constrains himself to show his little darling child a face of sadness and a face of contentment, although there is neither sadness nor contentment in him. He only does this to impress his darling child and expand his understanding so as to play with him.”

A Splinter In The Universe Or A Beloved Child?

Dr. Michael LaitmanBaal HaSulam, “General Introduction to the Book, Panim Meirot uMasbirot: …as corporeal things are separated from one another by an axe and a hammer, the spirituals are separated from one another by the disparity of form between them. And when the disparity of form increases to the point of oppositeness, from one extreme to the other, complete separation is created between them.

From the perspective of the Creator, who created the will to enjoy, there is no opposition between this desire and the desire of bestowal. It’s like a baby who receives from a mother—there is no division between them. They are inseparably connected and enjoy one another.

We see how in nature, a foreign organism consisting of someone else’s flesh receives the opportunity to grow inside the mother’s body and is not perceived by her as foreign! How is this phenomenon, a fetus inside a mother’s womb, even possible considering that when we get a tiny splinter, the body immediately begins to reject the alien object? An infection immediately forms around it and the body tries to push it out and separate it.

It’s known how during an organ transplant it is very difficult to overcome this barrier, the body’s incompatibility with and rejection of an alien body. But here the opposite happens: One body grows inside of the other, and the big body is always taking care of the small body, doing everything only for its benefit!

This is an example of the will to enjoy (the fetus) and the will to bestow (the mother) not being in conflict with one another. And the same thing happens in relation to the Creator, who created the will to enjoy. This desire does not contradict or oppose bestowal.

However, if the goal is to bring this will to enjoy to the form of bestowal, then they do become opposite to one another according to their intentions. In the initial state there is a bestowing desire and a receiving one: the Creator and the creation. But there is no discrepancy between them and they are united together. But then, creation develops and acquires an egoistic intention, and now according to their intentions, they become opposite: The intention of bestowal is opposite to the intention for oneself from beginning to the end, from zero until infinity.

What we have to correct is the egoistic intention and not the desire! The desire remains in us. We always keep the will to enjoy. But the intention has to be “for the sake of bestowal.”

However, we usually get confused about this, thinking that we have to fight with our desires. Religions and different spiritual practices try to destroy the desire or decrease it. But Kabbalah says the opposite: “Increase your desire and the intention of bestowal together with it!” Then you will be able to bestow more with your actions.

The Catalyst Of The Spiritual Desire

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: How can people who don’t feel any aspiration for spirituality be able to reach it if this requires a latent memory about it, a forgotten taste? Why do they suffer uselessly?

Answer: People do suffer uselessly, and that is why we have to bring to them the method of development without the blows. Then even if a person does not have spiritual genes (information about previous states), he will receive them from others thanks to the mutual inclusion.

It’s like in our world when you are resting in an armchair in front of the TV with a cup of coffee, watching a soccer game, and you think that you don’t need anything more. But suddenly they show you some commercial that convinces you that you absolutely need some object. You immediately forget all about soccer and start thinking about how to buy that thing. The advertisement takes away your sense of tranquility and awakens your desires.

We do not understand just how dependent we are on the influence of the environment. If we did not have that influence, we would be like animals in a forest. After all, according to the desires of our bodies, we don’t need anything besides the vital necessities.

Everything that is beyond the boundaries of necessity are things we wish for only due to the influence of society, which pressures me and convinces me that I need one thing, and another, and a third, and then I feel like I have to obtain those things.

If from every direction, via all the means of mass information, society now starts telling me that I need spirituality, then besides the simple necessities of this animate body, all I will need is spirituality. This is all we have to do—place ourselves under the influence of the right environment. And I don’t need anything else! It’s not necessary for the spiritual gene to awaken in me because the external environment will perform all of that work.

Spiritual genes awaken in special people who suddenly receive that kind of infusion from above and dash forward. This is special care from above. But others have to develop only by virtue of the environment.

Therefore, if we don’t build the right environment around all of humanity, if we don’t disseminate this knowledge across the whole world, then the world will have to advance only by the price of enormous suffering.

Rising High In Order To Justify It All

Dr. Michael LaitmanIn Baal HaSulam’s Letter #1 there is a parable about a king who grew so fond of his servant that he wanted to raise him above all the ministers….

He appointed the servant a guard at the city gate, and told a minister who was a clever joker to pretend to rebel against the kingdom…

The minister did as the king had commanded and with great wisdom and craftiness, pretended to fight against the king’s house. The servant risked his life and saved the king, fighting devotedly and bravely against the minister, until his great love for the king was evident to all.

Then the minister took off his costume and there was great laughter for he had fought so fiercely, and now realized that there was only fiction here, not reality. … Every single item in this terrible war became a round of laughter and great joy. …

[Then for a second time the king] said to that minister that he must disguise himself as a robber and a murderer, and wage fierce war against him. The king new that in the second war he would display wondrous wisdom (Hochma), and merit standing at the head of all the ministers.

In the meantime, the servant inherited “wisdom” (Hochma) from after-knowledge, and “love” from fore-knowledge, and then has been erected for eternity.

It is true, that all the wars in that exile are a wondrous sight, and everyone knows in their kind interior that it is all a kind of wit and joy that brings only good. Still, there is no tactic to ease the weight of the war and the threat on oneself.

We really do not know why we have to go through all of the suffering, problems, wars, and confusion, and on the other side of that, clarification, successes, and failures…. What is the use of all this suffering?

But later on this path, we gradually realize how from this we acquire knowledge, wisdom, power, and understanding of the general system. We study the Creator’s actions that are done to us, and as a result we attain and understand Him, as it is written, “We will know You from Your actions.” To the extent we understand Him, we start to sense Him.

Yet, the reason why we definitely had to reach this by such a difficult path is not clear to us. And now, while we are still on the path of correction, we won’t be able to understand it, but only when we rise above its limitations to the state of perfection. Then we will gain the necessary mind and feelings, the means enabling us to discover the justify this path.

Worlds That Move Toward One Another

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe spiritual reality is above time, motion, and space, in a state that we are unable to imagine. We perceive everything with relation to time, in which we imagine motion, or with respect to motion that we imagine in time. And all of this happens in a certain place to us.

On one hand, these three parameters in which we perceive the world limit us very much. But on the other hand, for now precisely they give us the only opportunity to feel our reality inside of them. If we were not limited by time, motion, and space, then we would not perceive the world at all.

Our entire reality lies inside of the boundaries of time, motion, and space, even though these notions do not exist in reality! Therefore, the world we now perceive inside of these three limitations is called an imaginary world.

But when we begin to develop spiritually, we reveal the true reality in which there is no time, motion, or space. We attain it from our level and higher, meaning by advancing upwards, toward an increasingly greater quality of bestowal, revealing the root that moves toward us from above downward: from the absolute quality of bestowal to greater restrictions in order to be able to reveal itself to us.

But in this reality, there are obviously no changes, not from below upwards nor from above downwards. The entire expansion of the worlds form the world of Infinity, various Partzufim, Sefirot, and breakings, until our state in this world, and our attainment where we ascend up along the spiritual levels, all of this exists only in relation to the person attaining them.

Inside of him, in his attainment, he reveals a reality that seems to have been organized for him before from above downwards, until the level he now reveals. And he ascended to that level from below upwards. However, all of this exists inside a person and is felt in relation to his revelation and self-correction.

In reality, before him there were no actions from the Creator’s end. Everything was completed in one initial act of creation. And it is also something we cannot understand: What does it mean that creation did not exist and then it emerged? After all, that already presupposes the existence of some sort of time, a beginning and end? But that’s just how we describe it using our human language.

These two notions: the expansion of the worlds from above downwards and the attainment of reality from below upwards, create the perception of the world that allows us to exist for now. And the higher a person rises up the spiritual ladder, the greater the gap he perceives between these two meeting points, understanding how relative his perception and he, himself, are.

In essence, this is talking about the will to enjoy that attains itself or its creation by the Creator. All the levels of revelation that are contained inside one, single act of the Creator are revealed to us gradually, one after the other, in order to build the right perception of reality in us.

Therefore, we now need two levels of attainment until they finish developing in us by virtue of our efforts and the desire to connect them together. But in the end they will merge and the entire expansion of the worlds from above downwards and our ascent from below upwards will unite in one point of total unity, which is called Malchut of the world of Infinity.

The Message Of Light

Dr. Michael LaitmanPeople’s desires are not sufficiently developed yet to grasp the altruistic message. And they couldn’t bear it either. They would immediately run away. That is why there is a concealment preventing us from perceiving the idea of love. People start hearing its reverberations and changing little by little.

Everything happens by means of the upper Light. However, under its influence people do not get smarter because we are not talking about regular wisdom. Spiritual ideas can only be grasped with the help of the Light. When it pours upon me, I start understanding something, and that’s how it happens again and again. After a period of despair and pressure, I suddenly feel that the time did not go by in waste. It turns out that this was a transition to a new phase of inner development.

Everyone experiences these transitions. We are still unable to prepare for them or to control them, to regulate their ascents and descents, the fillings and revelations. However, the time will come when you will control them, as it is written, “I awaken the dawn instead of the dawn awakening me.”

Preparing To Receive The Light

Dr. Michael LaitmanBaal HaSulam, “The Freedom”: Prior to the giving of the method of Kabbalah, the children of Israel had assumed the relinquishment of any private property to the extent expressed in the words, “a Kingdom of Priests,” and the purpose of the whole of Creation—to cleave unto Him in equivalence of form with Him: as He bestows and does not receive, they, too, will bestow and not receive. This is the last degree of Dvekut (adhesion), expressed in the words, “Holy nation”….

How do we exit this world? We enter the period of preparation. After that we cross the Machsom (the barrier separating us from spirituality) and rise to the level called “Hafez Hesed,” that is, bestow for the sake of bestowal. This is the degree of Bina.

Then, we rise to the degree of Keter, to reception for the sake of bestowal, and receive the Light of Hochma (Wisdom), while on the level below, we received only the Light of Hassadim (Mercy).

On the degree of Bina, we cancel “private property,” meaning arrive at the state of Hafez Hesed and are not supposed to use our receiving desire. This is also preparation, the phase of the correction of the vessels. The reception of the Light takes place on the next degree.

Kabbalists On The Nature Of Man And The Nature Of The Creator, Part 9

Dr. Michael LaitmanDear Friends, please ask questions about these passages from the great Kabbalists. The commentaries in brackets are mine.

The Superiority of Man to the Beast

After all the research, we find no advantage of man’s form over the beast except for the awakening towards Godly Dvekut (adhesion). It follows that the whole meaning of humanity’s existence is evaluated by the strength of man’s aspiration to the Creator, and in that, he is superior to the beast.

This is why it is written, “a wild ass’ colt is born a man.” And as the beastly desires necessary for his sustenance arise in man, so do the human desires need to awaken in him necessary for the fulfillment of his purpose. And the type of desires helps us discern who stands before us: still a beast or already a human, meaning he who craves similarity to the Creator.
