How is it possible that in today’s modern and enlightened Europe, 1 in 20 Europeans has never heard of the terrible Holocaust that took place on their land? What is causing 1 out of 5 Europeans to justify anti-Semitic sentiments? How is it possible that 10 percent of Europeans report having “unfavorable attitudes” toward Jews? And how can it be that in 2018, 40 percent of Europeans confirm that Jews in their countries are in danger of being harmed by anti-Semitic violence?

These figures were just published in a comprehensive survey conducted by CNN across Europe. While the poll shed light on anti-Semitism in Europe, one vital number was missing: all 8 billion of the world’s citizens possess a seed of anti-Semitism.

Whether conscious or not, every person in the world carries a unique attitude toward the Jews, which can manifest itself in various forms, ranging from positive to negative: from appreciation and sympathy, through envy and hate, to a drive for destruction.

In some people the seed of anti-Semitism evolves naturally. In others it needs a “supportive environment” in order to sprout. For some leaders, cultivating the seed of anti-Semitism can help with gaining control over the public. There are countless reasons and justifications for anti-Semitism, but the seed remains the same.

Baal HaSulam writes that “It is a fact that Israel is hated by all the nations, whether for religious, racial, capitalist, communist, or for cosmopolitan reasons, etc. It is so because the hatred precedes all reasons, and each one merely resolves his loathing according to his own psychology.” (Writings of the Last Generation).

Hatred of Jews is governed by the laws of nature. It precedes both the psychological explanations each person provides to himself, and the sociological analyses provided by researchers.

According to the wisdom of Kabbalah, the whole of humanity exists in a network of mutual connections, as a system whose parts are completely interdependent. In order for this network to keep its balance and stability, Jews of all walks of life must be spiritually connected to each other above their differences. They have to serve as a “channel” through which a positive, unifying influence will flow into the world and spread throughout the network.

In the words of Baal HaSulam, “the Israeli nation had been constructed as a sort of gateway by which the sparks of purity would shine upon the entire human race the world over… until they develop to such an extent that they acknowledge the pleasantness and tranquility that are found in the kernel of love of others.” (“The Arvut”).

Otherwise, when the people of the world do not feel a unifying influence, they are governed by the influence of human egoism, which incites hatred and division. And these negative sentiments are instinctively directed at the Jews.

Therefore, the many different attempts to combat anti-Semitism – through education, diplomacy, advocacy, raising awareness and dialogues – can only address the symptoms without touching on the root of the problem. Likewise, the Hungarian government’s planned investment of € 1.5 million a year to fight anti-Semitism throughout Europe will not yield lasting results in the long run.

Education and awareness are certainly needed, but they should lead to recognizing the natural system that governs the dynamics of human society – a system that evolves the whole of humanity to a higher level of human connection; a system that works to everyone’s favor when the Jewish people fulfill their role.

As Rav Kook wrote: “In Israel lies the secret for the unity of the world.”

Black Friday, the world shopping craze, points to a more fundamental phenomenon than the purchase of a cheap television screen: the impact of the environment on man.

Even someone who is not a compulsive consumer is drawn to the hedonistic pleasure of searching and purchasing products on sale. The satisfaction of buying gives us a feeling of renewal and joy that justifies every penny. In retrospect, when the monthly charge is sent, we are suddenly aware that most of the purchases were not derived from a real need, but from a social-competitive need that was in the air at the time and swept us up in the heat of the moment.

In general, our desire for shopping is diminishing.There is also an explanation for this: The purpose of the manufacturers and shop owners is to encourage us to consume more and more in order to move the wheels of the economy, the chain of production and sale. Simply put: when we buy, business revenues grow, as a result they pay more taxes to the state and can employ more workers. So more people have a salary and they can, not surprisingly, buy more. This circle explains why about 70% of US GDP comes from private consumption.

However, it is no secret that the recovery in private consumption and consequent economic growth is weak and disappointing, especially given the unprecedented incentives and zero interest rates since the 2008 crisis. Not only has the traditional economic toolbox failed to significantly boost the economy, there are other factors adding oil to the fire. The aging of the population, high technological unemployment and a lack of understanding of the behavior of the millennial generation all necessitate the need for a significant change in the system.

So, there’s no problem with shopping. It makes people happy to enjoy these shopping holidays, because by doing so they learn how much general participation in the environment, even if virtual, provides them with strength and joy. Hopefully such joint actions will make us recognize the need to strengthen our relations. If this is the result, we can say that we harnessed consumer culture to serve man, rather than vice versa.

We live in a field of connection that binds us together. We can’t see it, and yet it influences every aspect of our reality.

The more powerful a force is, the less it is apparent to the naked eye. In fact, the strongest force known to physicists today is the strong nuclear force, which is effective on distance scales that are a million times smaller than an atom.

Similarly, Kabbalah explains the natural forces that are even less apparent to us, and even more powerful. Such is the network of human connection: We are constantly activating it, yet we don’t realize it exists.

Today, the dominant influence in the network is that of division. We continuously radiate it from our innate human egoism. We spread a negative influence throughout the network, which manifests in hostility on the surface. As a result, many of us feel increasingly anxious, threatened, and lonely, while other are preoccupied with hating for no reason, fighting for their survival, or cursing on social media.

But we can tilt the balance by producing a positive force within the network. To do so, we have to consciously radiate unifying thoughts above our instinctive egoistic thoughts.

This is not about ethics and manners, or “be nice to others” mantras that we used to hear as children. It’s not about philosophy, psychology or religion. The wisdom of Kabbalah reveals to us the layers of nature that are hidden to us.

By making a conscious effort to radiate care, kindness and friendship to all human beings, we use the natural network that connects us to our favor. This is the network that Kabbalists have discovered. The network they have detailed across more than 2,000 pages in the “Study of the Ten Sefirot.”

However, to activate it, one doesn’t have to delve into the depths of Kabbalah. Just like you don’t have to study medicine in order to take a pill that works.

The only challenge to overcome is that we think our personal efforts are so small and insignificant because we can’t see that we are all connected. If many of us make a small conscious effort together, we generate a powerful force.

Residents of southern Israel are right to protest. They demand quiet, and I agree with their harsh criticism against Israel’s leadership. Their willingness to stay in their shelters in order to allow for a temporary attack that will bring their normal life back testifies to how fed up they are.

Israel must give a decisive blow to the infrastructure of terror in the Gaza Strip: demand that Hamas dismantle its weapons and stop its rule on the ground. To crush the terror completely, and prevent it from rearing its head. This way, at the very least, we will obtain relative quiet in the coming years, and allow the children in the south to go to sleep without fear.

Unfortunately, the current round of rockets has once again proven to us what we have learned throughout history: a jihadist terrorist organization understands only force. They are not interested in reaching an agreement or reconciliation with us. It doesn’t matter if we lift the siege, open the border, enable infrastructure, push for international aid or inject millions of dollars in cash. Thus, we have no choice but to respond with such force that will paralyze Hamas’ ability to harm us.

I do not call for war, and certainly not for harming the innocent Gazan population. But as long as we’re in the midst of an ongoing battle, we must respond with all severity and maintain the upper hand; as it is written, “he who comes to kill you, get up early to kill him first.”

The weakness of our leadership reveals the extent to which its view has been distorted by continuously trying to convince the world that Israel is moral and righteous. The world, however, is not impressed. On the contrary, the international media continues to paint a false picture of the reality in Israel. One only needs to glance at the European press, for example, to notice headlines that portray Israel as the aggressor, after a day with almost 500 rockets fired at Israeli civilians. Therefore, what the world thinks cannot be taken into consideration by our leaders.

There is no doubt that the next round will be more painful. We took a serious step backwards, against ourselves and against the safety of our children. Hamas, on the other hand, is celebrating their success in sparking a political earthquake in Israel, after the resignation of the defense minister. They – and the entire world – have concluded that Israel is weak.

However, I relate our weakness to a single factor: the lack of spiritual foundation in the people of Israel. Unlike any other people or nation in the world, we are required to fight on two fronts: the physical and the spiritual. We have to protect the safety of our residents and defend our borders with great fervor; and at the very same time, we must attack our division at all costs. This is the real war for Israel.

We all take part on the spiritual front, and right now we have been caught off guard. We must reach a cease-fire between us. This is the fire that invites our enemies to enter our house and do as they wish.

All of us without exception – leaders and soldiers, politicians and citizens, rightists and leftists, religious and secular – must be vigilant against the enemy within us, the snake that separates us from each other. Only when we join forces against our own division will we reawaken the spiritual foundation of our people.

According to the wisdom of Kabbalah, the spiritual connection between us is our only salvation. It will build a wall against our enemies. And the whole world is subconsciously waiting for the power that lies in Israel’s unity. Even Hamas.

Another devastating week of shootings in the U.S. Pittsburgh, Florida and now Thousand Oaks. How many more disgruntled people are out there that are slightly unbalanced, have access to weapons and are trained to use them?

America should recognize its problem is now much greater than gun control laws – it has become a culture that is desensitized to obscene levels of violence, with mass shootings becoming the daily reality.

U.S. authorities must form an overall strategy for healing their toxic, violent-breeding culture. We must understand the fundamental issue we are dealing with here once and for all. The human ego is growing and we must create a balancing force by changing the social climate and the way people relate to each other.

In the meantime, today we are sending our condolences to the families of the victims and the entire Thousand Oaks community.

The South American immigrant convoy has reached Mexico and is debating whether to stay there or keep moving towards the U.S. border. President Trump, on the other hand, had already deployed 5,200 soldiers to the Mexican border to stop the “invasion.”

If you had to make the decisions about immigration, how would you deal with it?

Undoubtedly, much of the uniqueness of the United States comes from being established as a nation of immigrants, by pioneers who came from Europe and built the world superpower.” However, this is nostalgia. The world has changed and today’s immigrants come with different reasons and motivations.

It’s interesting to consider what would happen if the United States would initiate an open border policy welcoming everyone in. What would happen the next day? How would Americans deal with millions of people coming into their country?

My heart goes out to immigrants who flee their country because they are truly being persecuted or denied of basic human rights. Yet every country has its laws and they should be respected. If there are American families or individuals whose heart is aching for the immigrants, why not give them legal aid to help them welcome an immigrant or even a family of immigrants into their homes? This is what I would recommend President Trump do in the short term.

In the long run, however, I recommend a thorough integration program as part of the U.S. immigration policy. Such a program would be a precondition for immigration, and would train every immigrant to learn the language, to familiarize him/herself with the local culture, study the laws, the social norms and so forth. Before they begin with the program, immigrants would have to demonstrate a genuine desire to be absorbed into the society and contribute to it.

“Are you sick and tired of the Jews destroying your country through mass immigration and degeneracy? Join us in the struggle for global white supremacy.” These were the first words on a flyer that was placed this week in mailboxes in Cary, North Carolina.

This flyer is not the first and certainly not the last. Just two weeks ago, Jewish students at UC Davis were surprised to discover anti-Semitic posters on campus that read “every time some anti-white, anti-American, anti-freedom event takes place, you look at it, and it’s Jews behind it.”

The posters on campus at least blamed Jews for something specific. They accused them of trying to thwart the appointment of Supreme Court Justice, Brett Kavanaugh. However, you’ll find a different reason in every flyer: Jews are guilty of mass immigration, destroying the economy, corrupting the government or what have you.

Throughout history, Jews have been persecuted and accused of almost anything. Kabbalist Yehuda Ashlag writes about this phenomenon: “The fact is that Jews are hated in all nations, whether it is due to religion, race, capitalism, communism, cosmopolitanism etc., the hatred precedes all of the reasons.” Why is that? Because the Jewish people have an obligation to fulfill towards the world. And as long as we ignore it, we will be hated and persecuted.

Unfortunately, most Jews are not aware of their unique function in the evolution of society. As Kabbalah explains, the Jewish people act as a central “hub” within the network of humanity. This is why they were integrated with the world throughout history. When Jews from all walks of life engage in unity above all differences, they enable positive connection across the whole of humanity. On the other hand, when they succumb to conflict and separation, they hold humanity back from its next level of development.

Subconsciously, anti-Semites recognize the unique function of Jews within the human network. However, like little children, they find it difficult to explain their feelings and formulate their demands. Thus, they push, harass and even attack, as they try to call for attention to their distress. We call it anti-Semitism, but in fact, they seek pain relief.

What we see and feel in our world are only consequences that come from a deeper layer of nature. Kabbalah uncovers the natural laws that shape the evolution of human society and how they manifest in the relationship between the Jews and the rest of the world.
