“There Shall Never Fail To Be Slaves From You, And Hewers Of Wood”

592.04Prophets, Joshua, 9:22-23: And Joshua called for them, and he spoke to them, saying, “Why have you deceived us, saying, ‘We are very far from you,’ when you dwell among us?

And now you are cursed, and there shall never fail to be slaves from you, and hewers of wood and drawers of water for the house of my God.

Question: Why are those who are close to you so dangerous and it is they who must be destroyed?

Answer: Because these are egoistic desires, which, one one hand, are absolutely opposite in ideology to the people of Israel. On the other hand, they can neither be altered nor corrected. You made peace with them just the way they are. They can exist in your nature, in your country, or just inside you. These are the desires that you have pledged not to touch.

But how can you move toward correction when you have enemies inside and you can’t do anything with them?

Therefore, the desires closest to a person are corrected first. And if he, accepting them as close, does not want to correct them, then as it is said: “There shall never fail to be slaves from you, and hewers of wood and drawers of water for the house of my God.”

That is, you will remain working in your desires, but we will subdue you to ourselves in these desires. We will not alter you, teach you; you will not become like us, working for bestowal, but you will execute our intentions in your desires. We will tell you what to do, but your work will be such that it can be done without intention. All this happens in one person.

Throughout history the qualities that you leave behind always harm you. They need to be corrected! And if you didn’t correct them and you gave them some slack, then you start to feel it in full.

Question: Why do they abandon these desires and not destroy them?

Answer: They give some slack. Let’s say you came, surrounded the city, conquered it, went there and saw beautiful women. You don’t want to kill them, you keep them alive, take them as your concubines, and maybe even marry them. They agree to undergo any purification. Hence there are many different types of flaws in the people themselves.

Question: And this is despite the fact that the foremothers, in particular, the grandmother of King David was a Moabite?

Answer: The difference is that she came from far away! She came by herself. That is why it is said: “Ruth-Moab.”

She said: “…for wherever you go, I will go, and wherever you lodge, I will lodge; your people shall be my people and your God my God.” This is a completely different matter. She chose! She wanted to!

And here the peoples (desires) resist, and it is necessary to take them and correct them.
