Kabbalists On The Torah And Commandments, Part 24

Dr. Michael LaitmanDear Friends, please ask questions about these passages from the great Kabbalists. The commentaries in brackets are mine.

What Is a Prayer?

Since half a thing is not given from Above, one must pray to the Creator to give him complete help. This means that during one’s prayerwhen he arranges what is in his heart since a prayer is work in the heartone must decide for himself that he wishes for the Creator to give him a desire to annul before Him altogether, leaving no desire under his own authority, but that all the desires will be only to glorify the Creator. And when he decides on complete annulment, he asks of the Creator to help him carry it out…. This is called “a complete prayer” since his desire is for the Creator to give him a complete desire, without any compromises for himself, and he asks of the Creator to help him always be with His righteousness.
– Rabash, Letter no. 65

The Lord is near to the brokenhearted.
– Psalms, 34

  1. We often hear that we should leave the beastly desires in their place. However, I feel that any and all corporeal pleasures distance me from spirituality( like I know what it is!) and the word “complete” and the phrase ” no desire under his own authority” are jumping out at me. While I tell myself I want it all to be for Him, I also feel like I bring pettiness and smallness to prayer by wanting the correction to touch even my corporeal desires. Is it right to want to bring corporeality to be for His sake?

    Thank you,

  2. Is prayer something we actively construct or is it solely the raising of MAN that happens as a result of the light’s effect on the desire? We always think we asking for something with some sort of internal monologue but isn’t prayer actually the end product properly hastening time?
