Learn To Be A Human

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: In his article, Rabash refers to a fable about a person who loaned a large sum of money to his friend although he wasn’t too sure he would ever get it back. However, when the friend of his brought a warranty letter from the bank that secured the loan, he got upset because he lost a chance to stay in “faith above reason” and, thus, couldn’t advance spiritually.

Answer: Be apprehensive of the Creator’s revelation. I don’t want Him to disclose Himself because, if He does, I’ll completely obey Him and will turn into an animal; the point of independence (“a human being”) will disappear in me. A human being is emerging in me when I am not yet sensing the Creator, but rather when I am searching for His image to set an example of bestowal and build it within me. In order to do that, I have to get a model and obtain the power to form this property without His pressure.

This is similar to the way that we act with a child where we give him a toy, but don’t help him out, thus allowing him to do his work. Moreover, we deliberately create difficulties so that he tries to cope with them on his own and learn. We enjoy watching his effort and progress because this is how a child advances.

We don’t let the child know that for us, it is easy to do this job. On the contrary, we pretend that we don’t know how to do it and that we are reluctant to perform it. We play and find solutions together with the child. We do it to provide him with a working space, give him a chance to apply effort, and uncover the reality out of the darkness. We don’t find solutions for him; he has to find them on his own.

Even if we are willing to help him and provide the explanations he needs, we shouldn’t do it before he totally explores his own opportunities to find the right answer. If he seeks our help, it means that he has a painful, tangible, and essential question. He already tried everything he could and nothing worked. Only in this case do we help him and replenish what he couldn’t attain because of his nature.

If he applies much effort and understands that he is unable to do it on his own, he eventually prepares his desire and sets up his mind for our clarifications and assistance, that is, input from a level that is higher than his. This “addition” makes him a human being. However, if I reveal everything to him before he applies his own effort, then my explanations won’t create anything worthy or new for him either in his desires or in his mind.

Commemorating Baal HaSulam

We are removed from the World of Infinity by 125 steps of concealment and are totally cut off from authentic reality. It is like we are comatose and don’t realize who and where we are. We have to awaken from this state, regain consciousness, and return to the same place from which we descended by climbing back up all 125 steps again. On this path from below upward, we overcome concealments and achieve similarity with the Creator. In other words, we become like Him.

As a matter of fact, no one in this world has a chance to wake up on their own, nor can we ascend from the bottom point that is buried under 125 degrees of concealment. As it is said, “A prisoner cannot release himself from the jail.” For that, he needs to use some external force.

We are unable to sense the upper world and, therefore, exist in a false reality. Because of our unconsciousness, we fantasize that we are alive and that there is a world full of people around us, the earth, and the universe. Such images emerge in our unconscious minds, and we perceive them as real life.

Through our dreams, we hear voices that say, “You are unconscious, deprived of actual life, of the spiritual world,” but we don’t trust them. Only those people who watch us from the side realize that we are in a coma.

We have to be grateful for the awakening of our “point in the heart.” It allows us to differentiate impulses that reach to us from another world and a different reality. Great Kabbalists try to introduce us to real sensation and, by doing so, wake us up to a genuine existence.

Beginning with Adam, the first human being who "regained consciousness," and up until now, there was a long chain of Kabbalists who attained authentic reality. However, today, we all have to come back to our senses. Our "doctor," Baal HaSulam, together with his "assistant," Rabash, applied all possible efforts to help us recover consciousness. It is they who attract the ray of Light that now finds its way from authentic reality into our unconscious mind that is, as of yet, switched off.

The Science Of Light For The World

Dr. Michael LaitmanBeginning with Adam, the earlier a Kabbalist lived, the closer he was connected with the root and the higher he stood. He was the source of Light for all who came after him. However, for those who desire to connect with the beam of Light expanding from Infinity, the main source is the latest or the nearest Kabbalist for it is he who “hooks up” and connects you with the Light, the Creator.

For us, such a Kabbalist was Baal HaSulam. He writes that he was given the privilege to hand the science of Kabbalah down to us. We are privileged that such a soul has been revealed to us who is passing the method of Kabbalah forth which allows us to uncover the Creator.

Baal HaSulam’s writings are the only works that can guide us to reaching our spiritual goal today. The books written by Baal HaSulam are the only texts that channel the Light that we need for our correction. And in order to prepare ourselves for them, we need the articles of Rabash.

The revelation of the Creator to the created beings, or our spiritual liberation, must be complete for everyone. This means that the teaching provided by these two masters is the teaching for the entire world.

There Is No One Closer To A Child Than His Mother

Dr. Michael LaitmanRabash writes, “My father Baal HaSulam promised us that by following his path and carrying out his advice, we will merit eternal life from the Creator, adhesion to Him.” Rabash himself reached a high level of spiritual attainment by using only the works and the advice of his father. Evidently, there is no other practical means for our generation to reveal the Upper world except for the writings of Baal HaSulam. His soul is especially close to us since we value a person according to how he benefits us.

We don’t compare the levels of the Kabbalists: Moses, Rashbi, the ARI, Baal HaSulam, and Rabash. To receive an eternal, spiritual life we depend on the souls that preceded us: Rabash and Baal HaSulam. It’s similar to how a mother is of the most importance to her child. Of course there are many elevated souls, but we can only unite with the spiritual system through Rabash and Baal HaSulam.

The Vital Link

Dr. Michael LaitmanWithout Rabash’s articles, we wouldn’t know how to aim ourselves at the goal correctly since Baal HaSulam is giving us scholarly advice from great spiritual heights. We are unable to extrapolate the details for our unification from there in order to take even one step and put it in practice. Meanwhile, Rabash starts at the first point and explains each step to us. After that, we are able to understand and put Baal HaSulam’s method in to practice.

When we start approaching the practical Kabbalah, the actual revelation of the Creator, Rabash’s articles and The Zohar become vital to us. Rabash’s articles help us form the correct intention, and The Book of Zohar helps us draw the Light that reveals the spiritual world with this intention.

Rabash has done what no other Kabbalist before him had. He described all the stages of the inner work of man, which is the practical realization of the Torah. He was the only link in the entire chain of Kabbalists, starting with Adam HaRishon, who handed down to us a step-by-step explanation of the individual and group work so vital for us today.

Before Rabash, Kabbalists wrote about their own individual attainment for such was spiritual evolution during the 2000 years of concealment, the exile from spirituality. Before the exile, the people existed in spiritual attainment, so there wasn’t a need to talk about what every child was learning as it grew. However, in order to ascend from concealment in our time, we need the sources that will aim us at the passage into the spiritual world. This can be achieved solely through studying the articles written by Rabash.

Without Rabash’s articles, we would not be able to understand other Kabbalistic texts correctly either. Hence, our work consists of the following two parts:
1.     Studying the articles of Rabash.
2.     Attuning ourselves correctly and proceeding with The Book of Zohar or The Study Of the Ten Sefirot so that we can now work with them correctly and draw the Light that Reforms.

Rabash was very reserved and humble. He always kept himself  in the shadow of his great father. All of his strength and magnitude were deeply concealed within and were impossible to see from the outside. He was the first to start teaching Kabbalah to the non-religious audience, regardless of their background. He considered dissemination of Kabbalah to the masses of paramount importance.

Learning "From Mouth To Mouth"

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: What is learning “from mouth to mouth” by which Baal HaSulam passed the teaching to Rabash?

Answer: Learning “from mouth to mouth” means sharing the screen because “mouth” (Peh) is the location of the screen. Such connection is regarded as “Rucha Be-Rucha” (at the level of Ruach), and this is the type of communication a student should attain with his teacher.

This is the degree of annulment of the lower one’s self, thanks to which he attains connection with the upper one. This spiritual state is not easy to achieve, but at least a student must do what he can in this world, by following his teacher’s advice as if it were a law for him. It is a simple practical recommendation that anyone can use, and it is regarded as the minimal degree of self-annulment before the upper one, which we are willing to perform due to our egoistic interests.

If I desire to gain spirituality from the teacher, I have to annul myself before him like in the army: If an order is given, it’s carried out. The teacher talks about building a correct intention, annulling oneself, exerting effort, participating in dissemination, and everything else that is required of a student. The student, in his turn, must listen. As a result, through the point of connection that emerges, he will receive the Light that Reforms and comprehend what he is told.

In the degree that a student annuls his egoism, he automatically transforms into a form where this understanding occurs through receiving an imprint of spirituality. And through this imprint, we begin to comprehend the teaching. If the lower one annuls himself, the upper one imprints his structure, his 10 Sefirot in the lower one.

Let’s hope that we will earn the reward of Rabash becoming our Teacher.

Commemorating The Day Of Rabash’s Passing

Rabash described the entire spiritual path that lies before us and explained what we have to do to ourselves in order to receive the Light that Corrects and Fulfills us. There is no other Kabbalist in history who did the likes of this for the sake of the Creator’s attainment. But of course, this became possible because he was the right person at the right time.

It is impossible to even imagine how we could advance without the detailed instruction manual we received from him. Without his explanations we would not be able to actualize the method of Baal HaSulam. Now, when we are nearing the practical realization of this method more and more, we are gaining a better understanding of how much we need the detailed explanations of Rabash.

There are thousands of Kabbalah books of tremendous height, but none of them can be used practically in our time. The same is true for the Torah: It can only be understood by a person who already attains spirituality. However, the only thing that can help a person who desires to enter the spiritual world are the compositions of Rabash.

How To Hear Rabash’s Articles

Dr. Michael LaitmanIn Letter #38 from the book Fruits of Wisdom, Baal HaSulam writes to his foremost student and son, Baruch Ashlag (Rabash) that a person cannot give up and stop in the middle of the spiritual path. Until a person reaches the goal, he needs the force of constantly overcoming greater and greater obstacles.

You cannot rely on past victories. On the contrary, everything you attained yesterday turns into a new desire today, which pushes you toward the goal even more. Therefore, the things you received yesterday cannot heal your wounds and let you rest.

Until a person attains the final correction, he must take care to ensure that his desire to reach the goal grows at every moment. Everything you attained immediately disappears. A person remains "naked" and that’s how he has to advance.

Obviously, Rabash performed a huge task while being next to his father, constantly being by his side and participating in all the lessons. He was very loyal to his father and always took his side in all the family quarrels that emerged among Baal HaSulam’s relatives. Some of them were opposed to the study of Kabbalah because it set them apart from the religious community.

Rabash was a successful student and he attained spiritual revelation. We cannot tell what height he rose to; he is too great for us to be able to measure that. We can only surmise about his greatness and his huge heart based on the explanations he gave to our states and the need to unite.

We don’t yet realize how deep his articles are and how vital his practical advice is. That is why we must study them all the time.

While working on the articles, the most important things are: 1) to make a concise summary of each article, and 2) to draw conclusions from the summary. Without doing this work, we are not really studying the articles.

Light Instead Of Medicine

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: If everything comes to us through the group, then why is it that when we have material problems, we have to work on them and try to solve them? If you’re sick, then you have to go to a doctor. Why isn’t it enough to simply turn to the group and have it help you on the inner level?

Answer: We are not yet at the level of being able to solve all the problems through the connection with the group. However, in reality it really should work that way. You are asking a very fair question: Why is it impossible to solve all the problems with the help of the Light that Reforms? Why can’t we turn to the group, concentrate a powerful desire there, and let it happen by acting directly upon the Light, the Source of life?

Once, when I had an extremely painful ulcer, Rabash made me sit next to him and study. I could not bear the pain so I was unable to sit there and delve into the text and the intention. I could not overcome the pain and attract the force that would soothe my pain, and perhaps it would have cured it altogether.

Without a doubt, it was my own fault for being so weak. That is why I couldn’t do it and attract the Light when I was right next to my teacher, when we sat and studied together. Since he offered for me to do this, it meant that I was able to! But at that moment I could not.

Returning to your question, once we have a large group, then we will not need any external means or medicines to solve any issues! Medicine acts on the bodily level, whereas we will be able to act directly to fulfill the desire that perceives a lack of fulfillment, experienced as illness or pain. We won’t just be curing the body, but using it as a reason to cure the soul.

The Perception Of A Sin Is Repentance In Itself

Dr. Michael LaitmanIn the article “When a Person Knows What the Fear of God Is,” Rabash writes that a sin takes place particularly during an ascent when a person, throwing away faith, merits the Creator’s love and decides to use it as a foundation for his work. A person thinks that he will never descend again since he will advance according to his common sense. However, he descends again into self-love, into punishment, for the fact that he has lost faith.

And this punishment is correction that helps him return to the direct path of ascending the spiritual ladder.

This is precisely how we should interpret our states. A state where it seems to us that we are in a descent and that we have received a punishment is actually given for our correction. Feeling one’s sin means not sinning anymore. A sin is what we have done prior to this! And the feeling of a committed sin is already correction.
