The Magic Dress Of The Future

Dr. Michael LaitmanWhen reading The Zohar, we want to participate in this game, in the scenario that The Zohar tells us about. At this time, the scenario shows the following to us: “Do I want to participate in it?—“Yes. I am interested in participating in this scenario and being a part of it.”

Question: When one plays a role, one usually identifies himself with it. What do I have to identify myself with when I play according to the scenario that is used in The Zohar?

Answer: It is said in the “Introduction to The Study of the Ten Sefirot,” Item 155: Therefore we must ask, why then, did the Kabbalists obligate each person (meaning each of us) to study the wisdom of Kabbalah? Indeed, there is a great thing in it, worthy of being publicized: There is a wonderful, invaluable remedy to those who engage in the wisdom of Kabbalah. Although they do not understand what they are learning, through the yearning and the great desire to understand what they are learning, they awaken upon themselves the Lights that surround their souls.

This means that every person from Israel (those who have authentic aspiration to spirituality) is guaranteed to finally attain all the wonderful attainments that the Creator had contemplated in the Thought of Creation to delight every creature. And one who has not been awarded in this life will be granted in the next life, etc., until one is awarded completing His Thought, which He had planned for him.

And while one has not attained perfection (until one has not yet reached the revelations or perceived the life in the upper world), the Lights that are destined to reach him are considered Surrounding Lights. That means that they stand ready for him, but are waiting for him to purify his vessels of reception, at which time these Lights will clothe the able vessels.

This is why we should aspire to and try to get closer to what is described in The Book of Zohar. It doesn’t matter how it is called—a game, an exercise, an exertion, a prayer, MAN—in general, it is about “knowing the subject of one’s studies”, as it is said “and Adam knew Eve, his wife.” “Know” means “merging, uniting.”

Until one merges with spirituality, one has to continue aspiring to it; it is called “the game.” One has to imagine himself being already “there.” If one doesn’t have an aspiration, then it means that he has nothing at all. To the extent of one’s desire to trigger the Light that constantly shines upon us, the Light starts influencing us on a bigger scale because our desire to attain it has been increased. We are the ones who elicit the Light’s actions, whereas the Light is unchangeable.  It is our job to enhance our susceptibility to the Light. We visualize the Light more vividly, thus getting a feeling that “we already are “there”: “What is it? How did it happen?” We play the “game of bestowal” and pretend that we are capable of loving others who are already connected to us. Due to the fact that I seem to be there already, the Light of the future shines upon us now.

Question: I strive to be “there.” However, what do The Zohar’s words mean to me in the “scenario”? What is the role of the language of The Zohar?

Answer: It is your future life. So far, these words do not mean a thing to you. What can the authors of The Zohar tell you? Their task is to describe the pictures of the authentic reality.

Spirituality is not the world of bodies, but rather the realm of souls, that is, the desires to bestow that are interconnected with each other. The desires to give make a system of liaisons among them. The degree of their similarity with the Light defines the extent of the Light’s presence in them.

What is this entire “performance” about? Each of us (as a soul), a desire to bestow, is already a particle of the interactive network; all of us are parts of the corrected humanity that we still strive to reveal. It does exist! All we have to do is divulge it. The end of correction (Gmar Tikkun), the third state, does exist!

So, we have to imagine ourselves being in a corrected state and pretend as if we are there already; this is how we implement our desire to reach it. Our aspiration to be there makes us feel that we have already achieved the goal and that we are already “there.” In other words, our aspiration equalizes with the desire to “know” the subject of our studies, to merge with it and dress in it. We don’t know what it is, but it is about us and our internal state, our eternal inner essence rather than our mortal bodies. We want to reveal it and live in it.

Our eternal essence does exist, but our minds have not merged with it yet. We want to connect with it, get inside it, as if one has a dress that hangs in the wardrobe and really wants to put it on. If it so happens, one will live within one’s eternal essence, since our clothing reflects who we are.

In our material clothes, we can only stay in this earthly realm. When one clothes oneself into this “dress,” that is, into the Light of bestowal, Bina, Hassadim, one reaches the future world.

Let this fairy tale hit our imagination. That’s all there is to it.

A Radar To The Upper Light

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: You spoke about the fact that we are constantly awoken from Above, but that we don’t feel it because we lack equivalence of form. What happens Above when we read The Zohar, are we awoken more strongly or do we become more sensitive?

Answer: If you just read The Book nothing happens. You can either read it or not. It all depends on your intention. If your intention evokes an equivalence of form, then to the level that you are equal to a higher level, you are impressed by it. But if you are not inclined to be equivalent in form, if you don’t approach it, it doesn’t illuminate on you.

The upper level is in a fixed state and it is called Hafetz Hesed (which doesn’t want anything for itself). You can evoke it so that it will impress you if you exert yourself and increase your desire. Then it illuminates upon you. It isn’t that it illuminates especially for you, but you are impressed by it according to your vessels, your renewed desires.

But where can you get new vessels and desires? If you are connected to other friends then among you, you give birth to the spiritual vessel. None of us is a vessel that can absorb the Light. There must be at least several people who want to connect in order to nullify themselves before one another, and that is already becoming equal to the upper. According to such an equivalence of form, they can feel a more powerful illumination from the upper among them.

How To Approach The Light

Dr. Michael LaitmanQuestion: Should we decide what we want while reading The Zohar, or should we try to find out what we really want?

Answer: A person asks about one thing and thinks about something else and wants another thing. The Light that is focused on the vessels evokes something totally different in him, which is different from his thoughts, from his question, and from his desire.

All that is required of us is only the awakening. If we can awaken ourselves correctly, then everything will work as it should. The right awakening comes down to one thing—have I tried to be with everyone, which means to be in a vessel, in my true desire, now while reading a passage in The Book of Zohar; not in myself, in my desire and only from there to think and to ask, but to be incorporated in my external vessel, not feeling any need for that or any taste in it, and to ask for connection with the friends by rising above my need and my taste? Did I do that or nor? If I did, then my efforts are correct and I begin to receive different positive and negative spiritual results.

But if my efforts were aimed at understanding and at feeling what is in The Book, these are efforts in my egoistic vessel and so accordingly the results I get are in a totally wrong direction. That’s what happens until I evoke enough Light upon myself, since I am still somehow connected to others and this Light somehow guides me in the right direction.

We should understand that our actions here have to be very accurate. On the part of the Light everything is simple: If you are in a vessel upon which it shines, then you are in contact with it and it works with you, and if you aren’t, then it doesn’t. You have to be in front of the attribute of bestowal, which is the Light. You cannot be connected to the attribute of bestowal at all if you stay inside your “self.” To the extent that you exit yourself towards others, you approach the Light.

The Lock That Shows That There is A Door Behind It

Dr. Michael Laitman“Preface to The Book of Zohar”: Indeed before we are awarded to turn the desire to receive in us to receive in order to bestow, by the Torah and Mitzvot (commandments), there are strong locks on the gates to the Creator, since they have an opposite role then, to keep us away from the Creator. Thus the forces of separation are called locks, since they block the gates of closeness and distance us from the Creator. But if we overcome them, so they don’t influence us and cool the love in our hearts, the locks become openings and the darkness becomes light and the bitterness becomes sweetness, since for all the locks we receive a special level under His Providence and they become openings, levels of attaining the Creator.

This happens even before we go through the Machsom (barrier) into the spiritual world and before we acquire the attribute of bestowal with which a person begins to work. Even before that, the locks gradually become an invitation for a person’s feelings and perception.

First, he begins to understand that the locks were put there for his own good. Then, he really feels that by seeing the benefit that each descent and fall brings him, every problem in life and all the confusion, both the closest and the most distant ones. He begins to expect a positive result in everything that happens, and this focuses him correctly and straightens his path toward the goal.

Eventually, a person begins to justify everything and to be grateful, even during a time of a descent and confusion when enemies and adversaries attack him. He knows that they are all forces that were brought from Above to correct his way.

He sees the good angel, instead of the stormy waters of the flood. He sees God’s hand in everything that happens. He gets this feeling thanks to his experience and the gradual acquisition of the force of bestowal, until finally, he really is rewarded with the revelation of the force of bestowal and begins to use it beneficially for his advancement.

Play And Come Into The Upper World

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Book of Zohar is all about the revelation of the Creator to the created beings. Who is the Creator? It is the upper Sefirot in which the simple upper Light is dressed, and through the Sefirot we, who are in Malchut, are impressed by them in different ways. This impression leads to the expansion of Malchut and then there is a desire, and it is impressed by them.

We in this world are a very distant result of these processes that take place on a higher level. But we are also impressed by the upper Light, which is dressed in the desire. I just feel this desire in the form of the still, vegetative, and animate nature, and people. I see it through this picture. It is only the Light that operates in the vessel, in the desire. But I was allowed to see its appearance like a theatrical performance, like a picture, a play that appears before me, but in fact, we did not need to see anything. Why do I need to see if I don’t have the right desire, I don’t have a Masach (screen), and I am not compatible to the upper world in any way?

In our world we see things in a similar manner: If I take off my glasses, I don’t see anything, if I put on different glasses, I see ten meters ahead, and if I put on another pair, I see a hundred meters ahead. This means that we perceive everything in accordance to what is external to me and what is inside me. There must be some adaptor, since the main law of nature when two parts connect is the law of equivalence of form. If there are two things, then to the extent that they have something in common they can be in contact, in mutual bestowal, impressed by each other. There must be an equivalence of form because otherwise they cannot perceive one another.

I am only in the desire to receive. And there is the upper Light. The desire to receive isn’t meant to receive anything from the upper Light or to feel its influence; it is only detached from it. It had to be. We don’t even feel the darkness. But a kind of theater show is created, some false picture, an illusion called “this world,” the innermost sphere of all the spiritual spheres. In this sphere the desire to receive is detached from spirituality, detached from the Light, detached from the darkness, detached from everything, and feels that it exists. This is the state we are in now, since it is a replica of the spiritual world. So we were given a game: We try and try, and as a result we eventually reach spirituality. Why? Our efforts are worthless, except for the fact that we try. I have to invest powers and then in contrast to my powers I summon upon myself the Light that Reforms from a distance.

Our world is actually not connected to spirituality in any way. Therefore, all our advancement is when we are not in contact with it, and when we don’t understand anything. What should we do? Do what Kabbalists tell you to summon the Light that Reforms. If you draw it upon you, it will help you. If you don’t, it won’t help you. You will never summon it mentally. It is only possible if you subdue yourself before the group and make it your environment. From all this area called “this world,” you were given a group. If you work with it correctly, you will exit this sphere and enter the upper world, otherwise it won’t happen.
