He cant make sure that his own study is any benefit to others. Thats why he is feeling bad. I think he wants people to see enough proof regarding spirituality or else he cant see how he can advance and love their friends as himself..because if he advances still or strive for that, they would be less equal and he would feel like he is doing onto the others exactly like he wouldnt want to be done onto him.Instead of leaving them behind as he advances, he concludes like he should leave the study.
