Why Charity Isn’t Considered Bestowal

Question: Why isn’t charity considered bestowal according to the wisdom of Kabbalah?

Answer: Charity in our world is totally egoistic. A person cannot perform one good spiritual deed because we are all absolute egoists by nature.

No matter what we do, we will not bestow unto anyone in any way: not unto our children, ourselves, our relatives, or others. We cannot perform actions of bestowal [1] since we are a desire to receive.

Only when we begin to unite according to a certain method do we get closer to creating the attribute of bestowal. But all our yearnings and closeness to each other without unity lead to nothing and are merely efforts [2].

When we are together, whether a group of two people or ten, and make great efforts and, at the same time, study according to Kabbalistic sources, we summon the upper Surrounding Light [3] unto us and it corrects our egoism.

Question: So can we act in bestowal?

Answer: Yes, but in order to do so we have to accurately carry out all of the Kabbalists’ recommendations and instructions. We need to invoke and summon the impact of the upper world unto us, of the upper attribute, because we are absolute egoists by nature.
