The Early Rain And The Latter Rain

Torah, Deuteronomy 11:13 – 11:15: And it will be, if you hearken to My commandments that I command you this day to love the Lord, your God, and to serve Him with all your heart and with all your soul, I will give the rain of your land at its time, the early rain and the latter rain, and you will gather in your grain, your wine, and your oil. And I will give grass in your field for your livestock, and you will eat and be sated.

There are day and night and everything starts with the night, when new opportunities and new uncorrected, tough desires appear, when the sun, the light of life disappears, and a person as if dies, goes to sleep, in other words he disconnects from reality. This allegorical picture shows us the same things that happen in nature with the seasons and with us during life: birth, robust years of development, and then gradual descent. The same also happens with our spiritual degrees.

Therefore, we rise to them, realize ourselves in them, and descend in order to rise to the next degree. We don’t see the continuation in our lives, except the change of the four seasons, but we see these stages in spiritual life.

Everything comes from the five stages of the emanation of the Upper Light [1]. The first stage is the crown or root stage, and it is followed by the other four stages. In material life, there is a change of seasons four times a year according to the upper roots, an upper standard. The same thing happens with spiritual life; there are four stages of implementing each spiritual degree.

“The early rain and the latter rain” (in Hebrew, yore ve malchosh) are the beginning and the end. Yore is the first rain, malchosh is the last rain, and all the rains in between come on time. Then the hot summer comes and everything dries up. This is the way it has to be in nature [2]. After all, this period is necessary in order for renewal.

However, if a person exists correctly in these stages, he doesn’t feel any special dependence on either winter, spring, autumn, or summer. He is absolutely comfortable in all the stages and he always has enough of everything. He understands that this cycle is necessary in order to move forward through rotation and progressive movements. Like the planets revolve around the sun, so we must revolve, realizing our Reshimot, and rising this way.

Therefore the first rain, the last rain, and the connection between them through the winter or summer are required exactly in order to bring either the Light of Hassadim [3] to our earth (our desires) and correct them, or to bring the Light of Hochma.
