“And The Lord Will Scatter You Among The People”

Torah, “Deuteronomy,” 4:27 – 4:28: And the Lord will scatter you among the peoples, and you will remain few in number among the nations to where the Lord will lead you. And there you will worship gods, man’s handiwork, wood and stone, which neither see, hear, eat, nor smell.

This is the current state of the people of Israel. The Babylonian exile, which lasted 70 years, followed the destruction of the First Temple [1]. Four hundred years later the Second Temple was destroyed,  and the Roman exile of the people of Israel came next, which made them scatter among the nations of the world.

Geographically and historically, the last exile ended, but spiritually still continues. Although we are physically in the land of Israel, we don’t exist in it in our desires directed to the Creator [2]. Our desires remain directed to the same egoistic goals that exist in all nations of the world. We didn’t rise to the level of spiritual aspiration, and therefore still didn’t come out of exile [3].

It is said, “And there you will worship gods, man’s handiwork, wood and stone, which neither see, hear, eat, nor smell.” These “gods” are culture, science, education, and training: everything that we adopted from other nations, and that to this day is our goal and is appreciated in our eyes.

Question: So, we are still scattered, despite the fact that we are assembled in one place?

Answer: We are assembled physically and scattered spiritually. Geography doesn’t mean anything. A person who lives abroad can be in a much more advanced spiritual state than the one who lives in Israel.
