Guiding Staff

The Torah, “Numbers,” 17:16 – 17:18: The Lord said to Moses saying:

Speak to the children and take from them a staff for each father’s house from all the chieftains according to their fathers’ houses; [a total of] twelve staffs, and inscribe each man’s name on his staff.

Inscribe Aaron’s name on the staff of Levi, for there is [only] one staff for the head of their fathers’ house.

Each of the princes of the twelve tribes had his own staff.

A staff is a guiding rod, i.e., the idea that guides a person and binds him to the goal. All the tribes had one goal but different paths. The ultimate goal is complete connection with the Creator, when Pharaoh and all the tribes connect to the Creator [1].

Each tribe has its own staff, meaning its own clear direction, its own role to fulfill. A tribe is something very strictly delimited, to the point that marriage between different tribes was banned. There was no mixing.

Only later when the Jews were in the land of Israel and fell from their spiritual height were such marriages allowed, because only when completely integrated and assimilated with other peoples of the world can the complete correction [2] begin.

Until then mixed marriages were forbidden because every desire had its unique and predetermined role: it was either the male part or the female part of that desire.

And marriages in those days were determined by the heads of tribes  and clearly in line with the general movement of correction. They called the head of the family and instructed: “Your son should marry the daughter of a certain family from this tribe.”

This is how it was determined on the spiritual level. It refers to the spiritual progress because in those days it was clear to people for what they lived.

Question: What does it mean: “and inscribe each man’s name on his staff”?

Answer: By writing their names on the staff, the heads of tribes declared: I exist only in order to advance towards unity with the Creator. “I” is a group of people that is united in the form of a tribe.

In other words, the heads of tribes declare the unity between them and their progress towards the goal by such an action. In order to check and to clarify this goal again and to determine the next phase, they give their staffs to Aaron, which means that they subject themselves to the upper decision.

Now they must reaffirm that Aaron is their leader, that the tribe of Levi is their leader and that it decides everything and leads everyone. And so having passed their staffs. they give themselves to the upper justice.
