Love And Loyalty

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe Torah, “Numbers”, 5; 5-7: The Lord then spoke to Moses saying: Tell the children of Israel: When a man or woman commits any of the sins against man to act treacherously against God, and that person is [found] guilty, they shall confess the sin they committed, and make restitution for the principal amount of his guilt, add its fifth to it, and give it to the one against whom he was guilty.

Question: What is the meaning of “to commit a trespass against the Lord?”

Answer: To commit a trespass against the Lord means to love one’s self more than the Creator. The Creator has no form. It is the attribute of love that has to stem from each of us and fill the void between us. If I love someone, all my thoughts and intentions are aimed at his or her wellbeing and this is called love of others. But if instead of that love I suddenly become immersed in egoistic love, it means that instead of cultivating the general mutual love between us, I begin to think about myself.

Love of the Creator is love of the attribute of love and bestowal. But if I turn my back on this attribute, it means that I definitely l only love myself. This is called a trespass. There is no middle way in nature: It is either plus or minus; either in that direction or backward. There is no other way! Therefore, if you are not connected to this attribute, it means that you are clearly absolutely connected to yourself. This is simple human love on the corporeal level.

In fact, I love the feeling that a certain person or a certain food or music invokes in me, this feeling fills me. We, on the other hand, refer to love as an attribute, of a spiritual state! An ordinary person cannot understand that although the same thing actually happens in our world, we don’t feel it. We don’t understand it and don’t discover these possibilities inside us.
